Chapter 12: A Friend to be Made?

Date: The same day, Devon's day after the meeting with the lawyer.

Devon, on the other hand, returned to his office with a blank look on his face. He was still processing what happened in the café earlier with Bonnie. His thoughts were deep until someone stopped in front of him.

"Hi! You don't look like the usual today, why is that?" A woman stated.

Devon looked up to see Erin with her hands on her back, slightly tilting her hear, and raising an eyebrow on him.

"Hey, I just had something to dealt with earlier. Then..." Devon replied as he smiled softly at the girl in front of him. He continued walking but Erin walked beside her and went through the conversation.

"Oh is that so? Do you mind if I ask what is it?," Erin asked.

"Uhmm, I met a friend earlier so...," He responded generally. He didn't want anyone to know his on-going process of divorce as it might be a big issue later on. He also didn't want to share his private life with other people as well.

"Ok then. Do you have some time later? Uhm, I just don't have someone to have dinner with...," Erin blurted out. Her eyes focusing on the floor as she continue.

"I mean, if that's fine with you...and your wife of course!," She added.

Devon halted due to his surprise. He was not expecting Erin to ask him to dinner. Maybe, this was just a friendly dinner? Nothing more, he thought.

"Is there anyone coming other than us?," He asked, scratching his forehead with his left hand. He was curious as to why he would be the one she'll invite.

"No one. It's just the both of us. Don't worry, it's just a friendly dinner. I won't do anything," Erin chuckled. However, her eyes shifted to Devon's ring finger. She noticed that the ring he wore when they met isn't on his fingers at the moment.

"Well, I'm free this evening too so I guess I can go," Devon replied. At first, he thought of Bonnie but the second the divorce popped into his mind, he decided to shrug everything off and agree to Erin. They weren't married anymore so what good would it bring if he'll still clung unto their marriage?

"Ok then! maybe, we can go out the office together since we work in the same place anyway?," Erin excitedly responded. She was on the verge of letting her romantic excitement out but she realized that Devon was still in front of her.

"If there is nothing else, I'll go back to my seat," He responded then walked away from Erin as she stood there grinning due to her positive emotions.

"I'll be waiting!" Erin shouted from behind while Devon just nodded and waved his hands in reply.

As Devon reached his corner, he started working as soon as possible to be able to get off work early as it would be a pity for Erin to wait for him for too long. At the same time, his mind went to think of Bonnie. He was eager to know how she would react to his situation earlier with Erin. Would she be baffled? furious? or not care at all?

"Ughh! Just about it. Why do I even think of her? It's better to move on," Devon groaned and whispered to himself.

He just went on to do his unfinished job and determined to forget about his wife, who will be his ex-wife soon.

Hours have passed when Devon settled everything he needs to do. It was exactly 6 pm in the evening so he guessed that Erin was already done with her work. He walked towards the main lobby when he saw Erin standing by the revolving doors scrolling through her phone.

"Hey, how long have you been waiting?," He asked.

"Not long,"

"Have you decided where we should eat dinner?," Devon asked putting both his hands inside his pockets.

"Yes, I kind of want something special for today so I made a reservation earlier at the Royal Lounge Hotel," Erin smiled sweetly and shyly at Devon.

"Oh wow. I'm guessing you're really in the mood to eat out today huh," Devon smirked at Erin.

"Well, I'm just really happy today," Erin shrugged it off not wanting to say the real reason why she booked their dinner in a high class hotel. She wanted to make the day special since she made friends with someone she admired. She wanted him to remember the day.

"Off we go," Devon gestured Erin to go first as they both walked towards the car.

The rest of the drive was quiet but they had small conversation on the way. When thy arrived at the hotel, Devon made sure to open the door for his companion while holding her head to make sure she won't bump it off the car roof.

'What a man! His wife is lucky to have him' Erin thought, looking at straight at Devon's brown eyes.

Devon and Erin made their way inside the hotel's restaurant. They found their place located at the corner near the windows.

"Wow, it's kinda romantic don't you think?," Erin uttered out of the blue while looking at the scene.

"What?," Devon didn't think he heard it right.

"Oh nothing! It's has the best view," She shook her head casting the thought of romance aside.

The night went on pretty good. Devon thought it would be a totally awkward dinner but he thought wrong. They shared their experiences when they were in college and at work as they laugh it all off.

The two of them didn't notice the time because of being to indulge in the conversation. Devon wouldn't have expected the topic of Bonnie to come up until Erin opened it up.

"We were talking for a while now but you haven't told me about your wife already," Erin said. She was interested to know what kind of wife does Devon have.

"My wife...," Devon doesn't know how to react to this kind of talk. He wasn't ready to talk about it.

"Yeap! btw, isn't she gonna get mad at you for spending the night with me?"

"To be honest, hah! I don't know why I feel like telling this now but nothing's going well with us," Devon stated. He wanted to get it of his chest.

"What do you mean?" Erin replied as she process what Devon has said. Is it the reason why he wasn't wearing his ring anymore, she pondered.

"We're cold now and everything isn't working anymore so we decided to get separated for real. The meeting I had earlier, it was with our divorce lawyer," Devon finally had the guts to share his story to someone. He felt like Erin won't judge him and would still listen so I blurted everything although he was aware of his vulnerability as of the moment."

"So, what do you plan on doing now?" Erin asked politely but deep inside she was thankful. She knew it was wrong to feel that way but she couldn't help it. How lucky she is to finally have a chance with him.

"I don't know but I think it's better this way. She could go on with hers and I could go with mine. Besides, our career and life went astray and worsened because of our fight," Devon sighed.

"Waiter! get us your premium wine for tonight," Erin shouted. She hoped that Devon remember her as someone he can lean on.

"Wha-"

"Drink it all up. It's for you to let it all out," Erin replied.

"I owe you one next time," Devon responded smirking. He wanted to mark this day as a positive memory so he went with the flow and enjoyed the night not worrying what would happen in the future.

As time hours pass by, the alcohol started to hit Devon making him stutter and lose focus. Meanwhile, an idea popped into Erin's head. But somehow, it isn't the best one.
