Chapter 9: A Year of a Night

Date: (Present), May 15, 2019. As the night goes on.

The silence proceeded as Devon and Bonnie were not saying a word. They were both staring at one point and drowning in their own thoughts. Are they making the right decision? this question bugs them for the night.

"Let's sleep for tonight. Go to sleep on the bed. I'll be out here," Devon broke the awkward silence with a poker face like nothing happened.

Bonnie, on the other hand, stood up without a word and a glance of her husband's way. She prepared going to bed. Thoughts were spiraling inside her head as she grasped the situation she was in. She was hurt and wasn't ready for letting Devon go but she was tired in preserving their relationship too. She loved Devon and still thinks of him as someone who she can depend on but their connection needs to come to an end.

"Maybe... We aren't really made for each other...in another life, perhaps we are...," Bonnie sighed with a very heavy heart as she whispered to herself.

The whole night, her memories with her husband flashed inside her head. Their college times, how Devon protect , and how he makes her feel like she was the person who understands him the most. Tears made their way out as she reminisce the times they spend together. All those memories were just hurting her even more.

Devon was left outside their bedroom sitting on the sofa putting his hands on his temples. His head aches so bad as he himself, can't comprehend what happened earlier. Maybe their decision was for the best, he thought. He didn't want Bonnie to suffer in their relationship so letting her go will be good for the both of them. He made her his life at one point and their relationship was the best thing that occurred to Devon but he can't deny that everything went down as time passes by because they both of them have different focus in life.

The night full of worries and sadness felt like a year for them. They couldn't sleep as they were thinking what's gonna happen next.

The sun soon went up again and another day has started. Routines were made as usual but this time, none of the couple were in the mood for a talk. That was until Bonnie started speaking up. She couldn't help but ask what would happen to them. She wanted to know if what happened last night was real and wasn't any of her dream.

"Dev..," She started, not knowing how to say the words she wanted to say.

"About last night, we should talk about it as soon as possible so we could get everything going," Devon said firmly but he wasn't looking in his wife's eyes. It's not that he doesn't want to but he couldn't. It hurts to see Bonnie like that so he said everything as quick as possible. He decided that it's time to let her go and live her life as she wants.

"Do you want it, Dev?"

Bonnie couldn't help her tears to fall again. There was a part in her soul and heart that shattered and throbbed. She wanted to go against what she said last night as she wasn't ready for her husband to go forever.

"Yes...I want it, Bonnie. It's the only way we could be free..." Devon stared at his wife's glistening eyes. He wanted to look at Bonnie's eyes for as long since he wouldn't even know if this would be the last time they'll be meeting.

"I...understand," The only thing Bonnie did was to nod and smile forcefully. She couldn't be selfish to keep her husband in her side while it would only made him suffer. She decided to give what he wants.

Devon thought how his wife still smiled at him even thought she was hurting inside. He just looked at her while thinking of a way to comfort her. He couldn't bear it.

"I'll be fine. You should go ahead because it's already late," Bonnie said. she didn't want Devon to comfort her and to see her cry because she might want to go against her words again. Let's stop this and accept the reality that we'll be living separately soon, she thought.

On the contrary, Devon wanted to hold her in his arms once again. He wanted Bonnie to lean her head on his shoulder for the last time. But, all he did was to turn his back and head towards the door.

Bonnie looked as Devon's back, tears fell uncontrollably from her eyes. It was already 8 am and she needed to be at her firm but she couldn't go out in that state. Bonnie wanted to let it all go.

On the other hand, Devon thought that it was wrong of him to leave Bonnie like that but he knew couldn't hold onto her.

"It was for the best..."

These were the words which kept repeating inside their head. But, was it really for the best?
