Chapter Eight— Dinner With My Family

Xavier's POV

"Javier, Javier, please wake up. Javier, you need to wake up. Mom and Dad are here". Ten year old Xavier sobbed.

"Please Javier! Javier!"

I jolted awake from my slumber. I was sweating profusely and breathing hard. I grabbed the bottle of water next to me and gulped down its content.

I rubbed my temple with the hopes of ridding myself of the headache that was starting to form. I took my pills prescribed to me by my physician for suppressing migraines.

Getting off my bed, I headed into the bathroom. I rinsed my face and looked into the mirror. My eyes were bloodshot and my hair was disheveled.

I performed my morning routine and took a shower. I dressed up in casual dark blue shorts and a white shirt with some matching white sneakers.

I walked into my room, grabbed my phone and headed into the kitchen to see my housekeeper, Martha already making breakfast.

"Good morning sir King."

"Good morning, Martha. How was your night?"

"It was fine, thank you sir. How was yours?"

"Good. Thank you."

"You're welcome, sir," I sar at the dining table and pick up the newspaper. She brought my cup of coffee and set it in front of me.

"Martha, why are you here so early? Shouldn't you be home, resting?"

"It's fine, sir. I came early to prepare your breakfast, so you can eat before heading to work. It's not good to start the day on an empty stomach."

" I know, Martha. But I won't be going to work today. I'm attending dinner over at my parents', so I thought I'd rest today before going there. You should have come later. You have to take care of your health, Martha."

Martha was my housekeeper. She was my nanny when I was younger. When I was moving out years ago, my mom had insisted that Martha would work for me.

I tried telling her that I could take care of myself, but no, she wouldn't listen to me. Martha was not living with me. She lived with her husband, Timothy. He was my father's driver, but after he had an accident from which he suffered a spine dislocation, he retired.

My P.A., Tyson was their only son. That was why he and I were quite close. I had told Martha to retire and just take care of Tim and I would take care of their expenses, but she had refused and said she wouldn't be comfortable taking something she didn't work for.

So to relieve her of stress, I had asked her to come only on Saturdays and Sundays.

"Yes sir, I know. But—"

Ring Ring Ring

The ringtone of my phone interrupted Martha's reply. I checked my phone and saw it was my mom calling. I cleared my throat and answered it.

"Good morning mom."

"Good morning Xavi. How was your night? Did you sleep well, sweetie?"

"Yes I did, mom. How about you?"

"I slept like a baby, sweetie. Thank you for asking. I can't wait for you to come today," my mom said, her voice laced with anticipation.

"Yeah. Me too, mom," I said, but deep down I was anything but willing to go there. I didn't want to see my father. I'd give anything to avoid this dinner, but I couldn't tell my mom that, she'd be devastated.

"Hello. Xavi, are you there?” My mom's voice snapped me back to reality.

"Yes mom. You were saying?"

"I said what time would you leave your house?"

"Dinner is at 6p.m right?"

"Yes it is."

"I'd leave at 4p.m there about. So I'll make sure to be ready before then."

"Ok honey. That's perfect."

"I can't wait to see and talk to you. I'm sooo excited. My favourite fashion brand released their newest fashion line and I want to show them to you."

"Ok mom, I can't wait to see them."

My mom was addicted to fashion related things. She had always said she wanted a daughter, but got two boys instead. When my brother and I were kids, she would dress us up as girls because she was expecting a daughter and got female baby stuffs, so she dressed us up as girls until we turned three.

"Alright honey, let me leave you to your daily activities. See you later. Oh, and say hi to Martha for me. Love you, Xavi."

"Ok mom, I will. Love you too. Bye," I waited for her to hang up first before proceeding to place my phone down on the table.

I started eating my breakfast. Martha was nowhere to be found, she must be attending to other chores.

I looked at the newspapers and on the front page was a fashion-related headline

'Biggest fashion agency in the whole world, Galaxia.A's Fashion Agency releases its newest fashion line.'

I turned to the next page immediately, not interested in fashion related news. I read through the newspaper while sipping my cup of coffee and eating breakfast.

As soon as I finished my meal, Martha came walking out of the kitchen. Coming over to the table, she bent over to carry the empty dishes. I stopped her and said,

"Martha, you can go home. I'll take care of things here."

"No sir, it's fine. I can handle it."

"Martha, I'm not suggesting you go home, as your boss, I command you to go home. No arguments and there's no need for you to come tomorrow, I'll handle everything. Ok?"

"Ok sir," she sighed tiredly. I didn't like using my commanding tone on her, but it was for her safety and I didn't want anything to happen to her.

Pulling her short, petite and round body into a hug, she also wrapped her arms around me. Martha was just like my mom. They were both so headstrong and always strived to get what they wanted. I had always told Martha to call me Xavier but she never listened.

I pulled away and smiled at her. I grabbed my phone and called Matt, my driver.

"Good morning, sir King."

"Good morning, Matt."

"How may I be of service to you this morning, sir?"

"Where are you, now?"

"Outside, sir."

"Ok good. I want you to drop Martha off at her home."

"Oh no sir, you don't need to. I still have to go grocery shopping before heading home," Martha interjected.

"Alright then. Matt, take her wherever she wants to go then drop her at home. I won't be going to the office today. So, when you drop her off, you can bring back the car and then head home yourself. And you don't have to come tomorrow. Take the day off."

"Ok sir. I will do just that."

"Alright. Thank you, Matt and see you on Monday."

"You're most welcomed, sir. And have a wonderful weekend, sir."

"You too, Matt. Extend my greetings to your family."

"I will, sir," I hung up and turned to Martha.

"Sir, you really didn't have to do that."

"I already did. So goodbye, Martha and say hi to Tim and Tyson for me."

I hugged her one last time, carried the dishes and headed towards the kitchen. Turning back to face her, I gave her a wave while grinning widely.

She rolled her eyes, smiled at me and waved back. She carried her purse and walked out of the dining room towards the front door.

I walked to the kitchen and arranged the dishes into the washer. Martha had already cleared the counter top, so all I had to do was clear the dishes.

After doing that, I grabbed a bottle of water and headed upstairs to my room. I got in, brought out my computer and started replying to the e-mails and other things sent to me by Tyson for completion.

I finished with everything I was doing and checked my phone to see it was already 2:45p.m. I also saw a text from Matt saying he had dropped Martha off at her home and that the car was outside.

I headed into the closet to choose the outfit for tonight. I went into my bathroom to take a shower. After showering, I got out, put on my outfit consisting of black pants, a white button down shirt and black and white checkered jacket with my shoes and I  headed downstairs.

I went into the kitchen to get a glass of water and I gulped it down immediately. Taking a glance at my wristwatch, the ticking hands displayed that it was just 4:15p.m.

I made my way out of my house and locked the doors. I got into my car and started driving to my parents' mansion, heaving a huge sigh as nervousness and anxiety ate deep into me. I really hoped this dinner goes well. If only my dad wouldn't be there.
