Chapter 3 Past

Chase and Sheena's fight started in an obvious way. Sheena was tired of waiting for Chase to marry her. Chase's grandparents Thomas were the ones who ultimately did not agree on the marriage. For unknown reasons, Thomas objected to Sheena becoming a member of the family. Chase couldn't ask Danes for an explanation because he didn't want to say anything.

"Sheena! Sheena! Where are you going?"

Chase was surprised by Sheena's reaction. Sheena's face was filled with rage. They'd never had a conflict in their relationship before. Their relationship was indeed filled with love and understanding. Sheena never demanded that Chase stay at her side at all times. All Sheena did was take everything Chase had to offer while remaining completely uninvolved in Chase's work. So, what made the woman feel so inadequate?

"I want to go wherever I want!"  She exclaimed, trying to control her emotions.

"What?"

"I don't have time to explain it to you, Chase. You're too stupid to understand what I want." Sheena couldn't help but shout; she was so mad.

"What do you want?" Chase asked, full of confusion.

Chase wants to keep his relationship with Sheena. There is no valid reason for them to end their love. Sheena is the goddess and the only girl that Chase has in her life. Chase thought marriage was such a ridiculous thing. They can live as a couple without getting married. They are not living in a bygone era. Isn't she aware that they can have love without marrying?

"Chase, you know what I want! You know it very well. So, why are you still asking me?!" Sheena yelled. She was totally pissed off.

"Wedding? Is that what you want?" Chase took his lover's shoulders and locked their gazes. "Listen to me, Sheena. I can give you the wedding you want. So, let's get married!"

Chase's words caught Sheena off guard, and she looked surprised. "Will you marry me without your grandfather's approval?"

Chase quickly nodded. "Yes! I don't need his approval. We can get married—"

"But I need it, Chase."

Chase was caught off guard by his lover's response this time. "Do you need my grandfather's approval? Sheena, we're getting married. We can marry without anyone's approval!"

"But, Chase, my ideal wedding would be approved and enthusiastically welcomed by the family. I refuse to marry a man whose family despises me. That would be extremely painful. I don't want my child to grow up to despise his own family."

Chase's hand on Sheena's shoulder was released. "I'm sorry, Chase. You may be disappointed with my choice, but I don't want to be disappointed if I marry you and am hated as a new family member."

"No way, no how! Listen to me, Sheena! We can live this relationship together. We can fight for my grandfather's blessing! Sheena!" He was trying to convince his girlfriend.

Hera didn't hear any calls. Chase's please were not taken seriously at all. Until Sheena left their penthouse. She did not bid Chase goodbye, which disappointed him greatly.

Chase had been waiting for Sheena to return for several months. But Sheena did not return until a year later and then an announcement surprised Chase when Sheena was in a relationship with his rival businessman. It didn't take Sheena long to send out wedding invitations to her friends, including Chase. Chase's mind was racing with rage, and his decision to get drunk was more regrettable than his decision to leave Sheena.

***

Chase had no idea why he had been influenced by Liam's conversation this afternoon. He was drunk again tonight after being absent last night. He wasn't looking for a noisy dark night, but rather a pub with a very quiet atmosphere. Chase seemed to be able to hear his own sobs because it was so quiet.

"Ugh! Chase, you're an idiot! Why are you crying over a woman who isn't truly in love with you?" Chase cursed internally.

Chase didn't care to wipe his tears with his own expensive shirt because his consciousness was no longer intact. Alcohol made him show a crybaby side that he should never show anyone. He just hopes no one minds her crying in the pub.

"How come you keep popping into my head, Sheena?" Why do you make me so pathetic? You'll never leave my mind after enjoying another man's body?! Damn Hera! Fuck!"

Chase wiped the fluid from his nose and looked up at the ceiling. Aidan might end up spending more money if he doesn't stop soon. Chase was driving himself because he didn't want anything bad to happen to him. So, as soon as he could, he left the pub and went to the bathroom to wash his hands before smoking for a while to get back on his senses.

Chase chose to smoke in the pub's back room. There would be no one to look at him with suspicion. Chase despised having to be recognized by people who knew he was a De Vera. Chase stood by the trash can, looking up at the ordinary night sky.

"Who said the stars in the sky are so lovely?" Chase laughed. "Lie! The stars in the sky are never lovely. They're dull."

He's not sure how long he's been talking to himself. What is certain is that nearly three cigarettes were consumed there. Chase's consciousness had returned, and he was still leaning against the pub's back wall.

"Leave, you stupid woman! "How many more groceries did you steal from my restaurant, huh?"

Chase could hear screams from where he was. His head turned to look in the direction where the voice came from. A restaurant kitchen that is still open is not far away. He saw a woman being pushed to the ground by a bald and fat man.

"If you're poor, don't ever come back to my restaurant!
You're so disgusting! I hired you here, but you keep stealing!" A man said, enraged.

Chase had no idea what was going through his mind as he walked over and attempted to help a woman the same age as his mother stand up.

"Could you be nicer to women?" Chase asked, looking at the bald man.

"I have no business with you, you bastard! Take this stupid woman out of my restaurant if you know who she is!" A man yelled.

Chase looked at the building that stood out among the others. "How much does your restaurant cost?"

"What?" A man said, surprised.

"If you act arrogant one more time, I'll buy your restaurant and even you." He said it with full authority.

The bald man waved his hand and entered the kitchen of the restaurant. Chase could hear the loud slamming of the door. Chase would have made the arrogant bald man regret his words if he hadn't been thinking about the woman he was helping.

"I'm sorry, sir. I made things difficult for you. Thank you for your help." A woman said, bowing her head.

Chase closed his eyes for a moment as he studied the woman. He wondered if his mother would be treated the same way if Chase had not followed his grandfather's orders.

"What are you stealing?"

The woman quickly shook her head. "I didn't steal anything in this restaurant, sir, I always collect the leftovers."

"Do you work at this restaurant?"

"Not. But I often help some of the employees clean up. In exchange, I can bring leftovers. But tonight, the owner of this restaurant showed up, and I was accused of stealing."

Chase felt sorry for the woman, but he didn't want to be bothered by other people's problems.

"It's getting late; where do you live? Is it far from here?"

"Not far from here, sir." A woman answered.

Chase had no idea what made him want to do well tonight. "I'll take you."

Only idiots would accept free rides from strangers. So the woman's expression showed how terrified she was of Chase right now.

"I had no bad intention to you.
All I wanted to do was send you home." He said sincerly.

***

Ellen returned home depressed. She returned home with news that may have surprised her mother. And James is correct; there is a hotel manager who knows everything because CCTV footage cannot lie. When Ellen was called up by the hotel manager, she couldn't lie and say she got the money from the man she knew who fucked her.

"What would you say?"

Ellen's family was already struggling financially, and now she had to go without work.

Ellwn was completely unfocused after returning home in this state. She didn't care about what was going on around her, so she opened the door and stepped inside without expecting to welcome a guest, which surprised Ellwn.

"Mother-"

Ellwn didn't finish her sentence when she noticed a man sitting on her family's sofa. Ellen didn't believe he was fit to sit there. The man's shirt was shinier than the worn-out sofa he sat on.

"Ellen? You're home? What time is it now? Why are you already home?" Her mother asked, confused.

The man's presence added to Ellen's mental burden. If Rowena's question had been asked when there was no one else around, Ellen might have answered right away. But the man who slept with her already knew where she lived. Ellen began to have doubts.

"What are you doing in my house?  What do you want by meeting my family!"

Ellen confronted the man with a perplexing question. While Rowena was confused, How could her daughter be so rude to a man she had only recently met?

"Elle? "What are you doing?"

Ellen glared angrily at her mother this time. "How come you let this person into our home?" She asked her mother. She had no idea her mother could be so kind to strangers!

"Elle, first listen to me."

"No way, mom. We must get him out of here!" Ellen shouted.

Chase called out, "Ellen." A strong, deep voice.

Chase's commanding voice put an end to the child and mother's debate.

"Don't ever say my name—"

Chase made a forefinger motion that appeared to rub his lips. Ellen could interpret the gesture as a signal to stop talking.

"Do you two know each other?" Rowena inquired, her face befuddled.

Chase slowly shook his head and rose from his seat. "We only met at Ellen's workplace hotel. There was some confusion between us, which is why Ellen despises me so much."

Chase's gaze was drawn to Ellen, who was suppressing her rage. "Is that correct, Ellen?"

Ellen looked up to meet Chase's gaze because of his height. Chase shifted his gaze to Rowena, implying that Ellen didn't speak like that if she wanted her mother to be okay.

"Yes, mom. We did have a misunderstanding at the hotel."

Ellen could see her mother's relief on her face. Ellen, on the other hand, was not about to avert her sharp gaze from Chase, who was standing with a smile on his face. Ellen recognized the man's smugness in his smile.

"I'm leaving now, Mrs. Rowena."

"Okay, Chase. I'll accompany you—"

"If I may, I'd like to request that your daughter accompany me to the front."

Ellen turned to face her snickering daughter. "Ellen, accompany Chase."

Chase was the first to go, and Ellen was still hesitant to obey her mother's orders.

"Ellen, you need to clear up your two misunderstandings. Understand?"

Ellen obeyed her mother's orders in order to calm her down. Ellen kept walking behind Chase's towering body in front of her, despite her heavy footsteps.

"I didn't expect to see you in this situation again.
" Chase crossed his arms over his chest. The man leaned against his luxury car, looking arrogantly at Ellen.

"Stop talking nonsense! Tell me what you're doing in my house. I even did what your friend asked. I didn't tell anyone about what happened that night!"

Chase was still keeping a close eye on Ellen from head to toe. The man knew exactly how to irritate Ellen.

"Elle, don't be overconfident. I came here because I helped your mother."

"Are you helping my mother?" Ellen expressed her disbelief.

Chase proudly nodded. "Did you know that the restaurant owner almost harmed your mother and called her a thief?"

Ellen's eyes widened in surprise. She had no idea what her mother did to go grocery shopping. Her mother only told her to take the leftovers and not to steal them.

"My mother is not a thief!" says Ellen.

"Yes, of course. I believe your mother is not a thief, but I know her daughter is a cheap woman who will do anything for money."

"What do you mean?" She asked, then raised her brow.

"You are so unlike your mother." Rowena is a gentle woman, not a cunning woman who fucks a man for money."

Ellen was about to slap Chase on the cheek again, but the man stopped her. Chase's strength outweighed Ellen's. There was no other option but to pry her hand free from Chase's firm grip.

"I could have retaliated for your rude behavior toward me, but I don't want to do so in front of your house. I need to make sure your mother trusts me until you're the one to blame."

"Stop talking-"

"Ellen, you should stop talking. Because I'm sick and tired of hearing your cheap voice."

"You—I'm going to kill you, Cheese!" Ellen swore.

"Is that true? Can a poor woman like you kill me?" Chase closed the gap between them, allowing him to now whisper cruel words to Ellen. "Before you kill me, I will kill your family.  You can't touch me, poor woman."

Ellen's hands were clenched. She desperately wanted to punch Chase in the face.

"Oh, one more! My name is Chase, not Cheese. Can you teach your mother how to spell someone's name correctly?"

In a fit of rage, Ellen threw her shoes at Chase's car, which began to move, ignoring her.

"Fuck you, man! I will make you pay!" Ellen exclaimed.

Ellen was not sure when she could do it, but she promised herself that she would make him pay. Hopefully, luck will be on her side after all of this.
