2. She is gone

Roman Ellington's POV

In the business world, you need to be ruthless to climb the ladder of success. If you are 'slow' or God forbid 'soft', you will never see the day of your hard-earned achievement.

I learnt about business from my Grandpa and father. My father is an excellent businessman but he made many wrong choices. Thankfully I am devoid of any of his bad skills. He still works for Ellington Hights but my Grandpa made me the boss.

My father was really upset when the lawyer read out Grandpa's last will. I got control over everything just like he used to have. Everyone thought dad will get the power but it didn't happen.

I never had a good relationship with my father and that Will made it worse. I used to feel low because others used to make me feel bad for having all the power. But eventually, I stopped listening to others. I got the power and I was not guilty about it.

I made deals that increased our business. Gave Ellington Hights a new hight. Nobody could mess with me as I was known to be a scanner that could scan the nonsense out of everyone.

Right now, I was sitting in a board meeting, watching the clown trying to sell his company's share to me.

"Even with the 30% share, you are going to collect more profit than owning a whole company." The man showed me his all perfect front teeth.

As I said, absolute clown.

"You worked smartly but it's your misfortune that you came to deal with me. I would have just thrown you out but as you entertained me thoroughly, I am going to treat you a bit nicer." I saw him and his men to gulp in fear. They should fear me. I wasn't called 'cold-blooded tycoon' for nothing.

"You think I didn't research about you and your company after your big talks? You are on the barge of bankruptcy so if I sign up then I have to start everything from scratch. You want me to do that with only 30%? If you want to save your company then I want 70%. You have the 30%and I assure you, you will collect a decent profit." I smirked at how his eyes widen. He was completely trapped. No one can save his ass except me.

After signing the deal and became the owner of a new company, I came back to my cabin to continue more work. I just sat on my leather chair when the door of my cabin flung open. I knew who it was even without looking up.

"You signed a deal with that company! What do you think of yourself? You are going to drown my company, you little brat. I don't know what father saw in you!"

So predictable father.

He always barged in my cabin whenever I sign a deal that he had no idea about. I tend to ignore him when he was going through an episode.

"Are you even listening to me?" He shouted and threw files that were on my table. I looked at him with my best poker face.

"Why should I even listen to you? Don't forget that I am the one who calls the shots here. I know what is good for my company unlike you. Now if you are done with your little episode then see yourself out. I am busy here." I couldn't always ignore him. I never wanted to be rude but he left me no choice.

"You think so highly of yourself, don't you? Mark my words, you are going to fall so hard that you won't be able to get up ever!" He cursed and stormed out of the cabin.

Grapes are sour.

I shook my head and my eyes fall on the photo frame of my mother. Even though it was just her photo but her bright smile automatically made me smile. I miss her. She was the one who always motivated me and told me that I was more than what my father gave me credit for.

Everything became a mess after she died. I was drifting away from myself and then my fiance came to my rescue. She didn't let me drift away. Hated my father's guts for treating me like trash. She was truly my angel.

She was working hard, managing her company and preparing for our wedding. It was already lunchtime. She must be on her way to her lunch meeting.

I dialed her number to get all the negative vibe out of me. She received it immediately.

"Roman." I smiled at her breathy voice. She must be very tired.

"Hey love, tired?" I didn't have many women left in my life to talk to affectionately.

"Of course, I am tired. I am having a crazy schedule because of our wedding that is only one week away. Mom is also not here not even my friends who would help me with the wedding." Everything was taking a toll on her. She complained but she would finish her works too and it made me worried.

"I told you to leave everything to the planner. You don't need to burden yourself too much. I didn't appoint them to take care of the wedding only to make you worry more. And your clients can wait a few weeks for the deal to be finalized. Rest love, you are overworking your self." I knew she was smiling. She loved to make me worry.

"I want to be stress-free on our special day and in the vacation." That brought a naughty smile to my face.

"Vacation? Honeymoon Lina, it's called Honeymoon. Are you that shy to say it?"

"Whatever, it would be vacation only. I didn't go anywhere in these two years. And why would I be shy," I knew she was blushing. "It's not like we left anything to do on bed." It was my turn to blush and I shook my head proudly. That's my girl, not cowering away from teasing.

"Damn you, Lina, I am already having a hard time controlling myself till our wedding and you are giving me indirects. We are ahead in everything. Remember we even decided our babies' names."

"You mean you decided them." I could feel her rolling eyes.

"I can't trust you women with it. What if we also have to tell our kids the embarrassing story of why their names match with a city or places? I still cringe whenever I remember my mother telling me why she named me Roman." I cringed at the thought of my mother telling others why she named me Roman.

"Because she conceived you in Rome." I groaned and she laughed knowing it hit a nerve.

"Enough of this, I have a meeting in a few minutes. You just go and rest after the meeting you are going to attend. I will tell your assistant to clear everything else today." I became serious again. She never took care of her health.

"But Roman-" She started but I interrupted.

"No, but, or, and, else, anything. Just take a rest. I don't want my bride to be tired or sick on our day." I knew she didn't like when she was ordered.

"Do you know you are so--" She suddenly stopped and I frowned. I heard some weird noises, fear gripped my heart, and I starting to shout her name.

She didn't respond to me and before I understood what's going on, I heard a loud crashing sound and at the end of the call I heard her scream which made my blood turn cold.

I kept shouting her name more frantically and it made my assistant Joshua run into my cabin.

"Sir, what's wrong?" He was alarmed when he saw me moving frantically around the table.

"Tell Matt to bring out the car!" I shouted and ran towards the elevator, all the time trying to call Lina's number but no result.

I kept tapping my foot on the floor impatiently, my heart was beating so fast and it's making me more anxious. I ran out of the elevator as I saw Matt was just pulling over. I jumped inside the car and told him the restaurant name where Lina was supposed to have her meeting.

Matt, my driver understood that something was wrong so, he increased the speed. All the time I was chanting only one thing.

Please be okay.

I was looking out of the window to notice anything unusual because I knew she didn't reach the restaurant. Something happened with her on the way.

Matt slowed down and I wondered why. We were beside Lake Ontario and police gathered where it seemed to be an accident sight. Everything was fine until I saw them examining a wrecked car that clearly was under the water.

I can't lose her too!

It was her car, wrecked at the front, water was still dripping from it. Matt pulled over beside the police van. I was numb. I slowly got out of the car and approached them. Police tried to stop me but I told them that I knew who was in it.

"Who was in the car, Mr. Ellington?"

"My fiance" I whispered and looked at the ambulance. The door was open and I could see a body lying there in the body bag.

"We only find the body of a man in his mid-thirties inside the car. We found no one else." It brought a little hope within me.

"She could be out there!" I pointed at the water and looked at the officer that meant Find her!

"Even if she does, she won't make it. I am sorry Mr. Ellington, either way, your fiance is no more. I will tell the diving squad to search for her body." The police officer walked towards his colleagues and My legs gave away.

I kneeled on the road. Matt came by my side but I couldn't feel anything. As if all the energy was sucked out of me. I couldn't focus my eyes on anything. It became blurry and only one thing I was whispering to myself,

She is gone.
