Chapter 8

I remember what happened that day like it was yesterday; May spent the night at my place or the whole day after school I should say because I met her in my room when I came home.

******

We have been preparing for the event for two weeks after May heroically saved my life at the park. I joined the science research team responsible for the day’s science activities. We were to brainstorm ideas about what to do. Some of us decided to build drones others rocket everyone had a special idea he or she brought except me.

I am a science guy but secretly more of a musician than a scientist. I took my guitar to school that day but hid it behind the theatre stage to pick it up later after our rehearsal in the lab.

I was focused on the ICT aspect of the rehearsals; I was added to the group for ICT gadgets which had only four members before I joined; I guessed it’s a group for nerds and geniuses. I Scott, John and Dave with another guy I hadn’t seen before around the school. We were supposed to come up with a genius idea and build something wonderful and unique.

My mind was filled up with the song on my mind; it was going on and on in my head until I got lost in it.

“Hey!” Scott tapped me. “Are you with us?

“Yeah. I am with you; It’s just I have a lot on my mind now and I need to clear my head” I said. Although there was just one thing on my mind; the explosion of the song I wrote for May.

“Alright! Go ahead we’ll cover for you right guys?” Scott Asked rolling his eyes up and then down continuously gesturing to Scott, Dave and John and the other guy.

They let me go just like that. “Thanks pal” I stood up, gave everyone of them a hand shake and a path on the back; I started for the theatre to get my guitar. The theatre was empty when I got there; the drama-musical students hadn’t started their rehearsals for the day in the theatre and as it seemed I was the only one in the theatre. I planned to get my guitar and go to the garden behind the bleachers for the football field but now that I a whole theatre to myself it was irresistible and so hard to just leave. I drew a chair and sat down in the middle of the stage; I made sure it was in the middle of the stage; I had always dreamed of being on a stage this classic and big to share my music, although mostly as a kid.

I playing one of the songs I wrote the night I met May; ‘Over’ I titled it. She was the bridge between a bad emotionally stressed drunkard guy and the loving, caring, tender, and gentle and emotionally inclined and healed person seating in front of the stage and singing unknown that he had an audience by now; I sang the song till the end of it.

After I was through singing I raised my head up only to see Mrs. Harper and some other girls and boys around. The all started clapping; May walked the theatre while they were still clapping. She sighted Mrs. Harper also clapping; it was known that Mrs. Harper is not easily impressed so whoever she was clapping for must be a visitor or someone not in the school.

May walked up the stage while I was packing up to leave; she looked at shocked and held my hand to stop me from packing. The look on her face now was the ‘explain’ look.

“What are you doing here?” She asked.

Before I could say a word, Mrs. Harper interrupted. “This Young man here sang the best song I have heard on a long time for an obviously wonderful and lucky girl. Who is the lucky girl, young man?” She asked pushing her glasses up her nose and squint her eyes at me.

“WAIT! He sang and you are impressed?” May asked eyes wide at me and fighting off a smile.

“Yes he did dear; and very good I should admit” Mrs. Harper answered

May had never heard me sing before; so this was a surprise. She never even heard or saw me play my guitar and there I was putting that smile on Mrs. Harper’s face.

“I have to go Ladies” I managed to say eyes down and hanging my guitar over my neck. I didn’t plan for anyone to see me with a guitar and now the whole arts theatre was filled with people from all facets of the school. “And gents” I added after noticing the crowd’s getting bigger. Somehow the word had gone out that I sang in the theatre and Mrs. Harper was impressed.

“No young man! You go nowhere until you sing that song again and tell us who it is for and how and who wrote this master piece” Mrs. Harper said climbing up stage and looking me straight in the eye. “You won’t let and audience down would you?” She asked

“Yes you won’t let us down!” she said looking at me and then at the crowd. “YOU WON’T LET US DOWN!” She beckoned at the crowd and soon everybody in the theatre was ‘chanting you won’t let us down’; I was doomed. More people came in including my science teachers; I see Mr. Leo our math teacher trying to his way to the front.

Mr. Leo made it to the stage and everyone gradually stopped chanting. Now the two most stern teachers and believers that each other’s field was better than the others’ were standing on the stage; I brought two war lords to the stage.

“Now, what is my science trophy doing in the art theatre?” Mr. Leo asked.

“Oh you are science oriented?” She interrupted with a question. She is fond of interrupting and I know someone who doesn’t like to be interrupted, Mr. Leo.

“I don’t know and yes I am science oriented” I said trying to kill two birds with one stone.

“This science is a piece of good art!” Mrs. Harper said turning to Mr. Leo who was trying to calm his nerves from being interrupted.

“Nope! He is not, he is a lost sheep that I am taking home” He answered as calm as he could.

“Let the crowd decide” She said turning from him to the crowd. “The science world looks for proof of things before they believe right?” She asked the crowd and they chanted ‘yes’. “So do we want proof or not” She turned to Mr. Leo.

“Proof it is” he responded and everybody including May who was now amongst the crowd screamed “yes”.

I was doomed. “How come nobody is asking me if I want to” I said through the screams of the crowd but to no avail. I had no choice.

I pulled my guitar out of its case and sat down on the chair I initially used.

“I have to warn you Mrs. Harper is exaggerating” I said just in case I did anything wrong or forgot my lyrics because of anxiety.

“I wrote this song the day I met an angel who changed everything in my life and gave me a new perspective about life and love” I said and started the intro of the song and sang the whole song as good as I could.

Everyone was quiet while I was singing and when I finished they clapped for me; Mr. Leo was the last that stopped clapping.

“This science is really a fine piece of art Mrs. Harper” He turned to Mrs. Harper and then to me. “Jag of all trade!

“Okay, now I got to go” I said and stood up to put my guitar in its bag.

“Who was the inspiration of this song?” Mrs. Harper asked.

“Umm…. She is right here amongst us” I said looking at May in the crowd.

“She must be really lucky to have such a talented heart to herself. If I was still young I would fight her for you” Mrs. Harper said looking turning to the crowd. Everyone laughed. “Does anyone want to know who this angel is?” She asked.

“YESSS” They all screamed.

“Okay?” She turned to me.

I Hung my guitar and walked to the front of the stage. “She is the one” I said and ran off to the exit at the back of the stage. I could hear some people ask “Who is the one”. I smiled and ran off. Only my friends knew who I was talking about.

I went to the computer lab; I didn’t see anyone there. I guessed they were still in the theatre or on their way so I waited. I tried to think about what we would do from the ICT group; something came up in my head and I shared when Scott, Dave, John and Shab as I chose to call the other guy and we started working on it.

The news somehow got home to my mum that I sang to the whole school. When I got home she couldn’t stop smiling at me so figured she heard too.

“Hi “ I said walking up the stairs to my room.

“Hi Liam! How was school today?” She asked lifting her face from the book she was reading. “I see you have reconciled with your guitar”

“Kind of” I answered.

“Okay!” Her smile grew wider. “There’s lunch for you in the kitchen”

“Okay mum, Thanks” I said opening the door to my room and entered only to meet May on my bed.

“Crap! What in the worlds are doing?” I asked

“I came to know who the one is, everyone is curious and talking about you in school today.

“Oh God! Not again!” I said falling to the side of my bed.

“I didn’t even know you play guitar!” she said sitting up and turning to look at me.

“Yeah! Long story for another day” I said sitting up too.

“I can’t wait to hear it then” She said. “God! You sound great and I was so proud of you and I still am” She added.

“Really?” I asked

“Yep! You really were. If someone told me by this time last month that you will sing in a month’s time I wouldn’t believe them” She said giggling. “You are amazing and full of surprises, Liam”

“If not for you I would never have sang or played again. You did a lot to me than you think; so if you ask me, you are the amazing one and I’m still your work in progress” I said reaching for her hand with both mine. “You sneaky sweet girlfriend”

She stared at me for a moment and finally moved closer and tighter into our grip. “I had to sneak in, you know” She said and stared more into my face; I tried to endure but it was just too unbearable.

“Please don’t eat me” I said. It made her laugh. “You the ‘oh sweet lunch’ look on your face and I am not ready to be eaten”

“But I literally want to eat you now that I know you are double adorable and wonderful” She said in a tiny kid-like voice folding her lower lip into the upper one. Seeing her like this does a little something to me all the time.

“Talking about lunch I haven’t eaten and would be wondering why I haven’t come down to get my lunch and that is too much attention given that I have sneaky-Ricky-Dickey all in one sitting here” I said making to stand up from the bed to at least go get lunch before my came up stairs to find out why I King Food hasn’t taken his lunch yet and what I was doing that is taking all the urge for food from me; May stood up too and I turned from the door to her.

“Talking about your lunch; do you want to eat something else?” She asked. She had a finger in her shirt now and was nibbling on it.

“What could I possibly eat now aside mum’s cooking since yours is ruled out, sneaky girlfriend?” I asked folding both my arms over my chest.

“Well, who said there wasn’t something to eat aside mum’s cooking or it would be food?” She asked walking towards, rolling her hair on the fingers. “And who said my cooking was ruled out”

She walked closer to me with every pounding of my heart against my chest. “Ummm…I don’t understand! What is there aside my lunch downstairs and how are you going cook in here?” I asked. My heart was pounding faster because she was closer to me; I let my hands down from my chest and moved a step backwards but she countered with two steps making us closer than we were before I moved back. “And why are you looking at me like that?” I asked moving back again but I hit the wall close to my window; she followed this time leaning on me completely.

“How I’m I looking at you?” She asked; she ran her ring fingers from both sides of y cheek until both her thumbs somehow reach my lower lip and pulled it down gently.

“Like unexplainable!” I said looking away from her face; I was blushing. “I don’t know! It’s just you look different and amazing and I love you looking at me like that even though I feel eye-raped right now; from you it is a great feeling”

“Hmm..Okay! Let’s go each lunch already” She beckoned me to follow her downstairs for lunch. Little did I know that she has prepared a trap for me just before we got to the door; she held the door knob as if to open it but let herself fall on me when she noticed was close enough that she wouldn’t hit the floor or anything that might injure her.

It was unexpected so I couldn’t hold her up; I fell down with her on me. She turned over and sat on my lower stomach and placed her right hand on my belly button and the left on my lips.

“Silly boy, I am the lunch and my cooking” She said with a soft hairy tone. “Do you want lunch now or later?

“Now, I want lunch now!” I said. I really didn’t know how the words came out but I still am glad they did.

She didn’t say anything after that but I did have lunch or we did have lunch which lasted until dinner time.

Butterflies or electricity I couldn’t really tell which I felt for May; maybe I felt both. When she touches me I feel a spark through my whole body and I shiver but then I also feel a like I have bubbles in my head.

May was wild and wonderful and I was gentle, passionate and tender but I guess you need a touch of another color to make it stripes. She fell asleep in my hands after one last kiss under our heat and field; I watched her sleep with a smile on her face and soon fell asleep too until I woke up in the middle of the night and accidentally woke May up.

She stood up and walked to my guitar and asked me to play and sing for her which I did; seems she had a hell of a dream and I’m guessing it was about me even though I never asked I just felt it so.

We cuddled until dawn when she had to dress up and sneak out of my room and go and sneak into hers.
