Chapter Nine

“GOOD morning, Miss Policarpio.

Mavis eyed the car and its driver incredulously. She knew the driver, Gary. He’s Mr. Dela Vega’s trusted driver and she had known him since the day she started at DV Corp. However, this was the very first time that he had fetched her to work. Now, Mavis was feeling nervous because of this sudden visit.

“Sir Rush had asked me to come and get you. Are you ready to go? We still have to get him from his home before going to work,” Gary explained.

Say, what? He’s here to get me? What…is happening?

Mavis was baffled but she noted the way Gary address their boss. Today was only her third day at work—minus the weekend—as Mr. Dela Vega’s executive assistant, but she knew about her boss’ level of contact with the employees.

Aside from the company’s board of directors, only Ms. Chua and Mr. Castillo has the first name basis with Mr. Dela Vega. Only they get to call him “Rush”. Those who had stayed with the company for a long time and employees who got the “employee of the month” awards get to call him “Sir Rush”. And for the newbies like Mavis, they should formally address him as “Mr. Dela Vega”.

“Good morning. Is there something urgent that he needs? Why did he ask you to come and get me?” Mavis asked Gary, feeling nervous and curious at the same time. She got into the car’s passenger seat, beside Gary.

“Oh, he didn’t tell you? Sir Rush had asked me to come and get you every day, ma’am. You will go to work with him starting today. I don’t actually know why. In all my seven years of being his driver, this is the first time this ever happened,” Gary informed her.

Mavis wondered about that. Mr. Dela Vega didn’t tell her about this arrangement the last time they talked. In fact, he went radio silent the whole weekend. He didn’t contact Mavis after that “signature slip-off” fiasco.

But instead of wondering more about the issue, Mavis busied herself reviewing Mr. Dela Vega’s shortlist for the day. She took the opportunity to arrange their schedule while going to the Dela Vega’s.

If Mavis will be given the chance, maybe she’ll be able to meet Mrs. Victoria Dela Vega—the president and owner of the Dela Vega Corporation—because she knows that Mr. Dela Vega lives with his grandmother. However, when they got there, Mr. Dela Vega was already waiting for them in front of their mansion. He immediately got into the car before Mavis could even utter a simple greeting.

“Why are you sitting there, Miss Policarpio? How would we be able talk properly if you’re there?” Mr. Dela Vega asked with creased forehead, clearly displeased.

It’s still early to be this aggravated, boss, Mavis wanted to tell him but she held herself back. We should not wake the wolf inside him for now.

Mavis had no choice but to get out of the car and sit beside him in the backseat. Then, she gave him his shortlist and briefed him about his meeting schedule for the day. It’ll be another tough day for them. Today’s the board meeting where her boss would present the company’s monthly business review. And with all the corporation’s subsidiaries, she bets that it will take a very long time to finish everything.

“Gary, please stop by Cafétal. I need to get coffee for Mr. Dela Vega,” Mavis asked the driver with a smile.

“Order two coffees,” Mr. Dela Vega said while looking at his phone.

“Okay. What’s the flavor of the other one?” Mavis asked politely. But she got curious of who the coffee was for.

“What do you like?” Mr. Dela Vega asked her in return.

            “What?” she asked, dumbfounded.

“It’s your coffee. I don’t know what you’d like,” he deadpanned. “Also, do a follow up with Silver Palace. Ask them for our breakfast.

            “Huh?

Is he for real? Or he’s just kidding with me?

Hello? With his seriousness, he might suffer a heart attack if ever he makes a joke, you know, a part of her said.

“Do I need to f*cking repeat everything I say to you right now, Miss Policarpio?

            “No, Mr. Dela Vega.

            What. The. F*ck?

TODAY is too good to be true, Mavis thought. After ensuring that Mr. Dela Vega was finished and satisfied doing his morning ritual, he had tasked her to have her medical exam taken now. He even made Gary her personal driver. She had finished taking her medical exam with ease because she was made priority at one of DV Corporation’s affiliated clinics. She didn’t feel guilty because there’s not much people in the clinic.

Afterwards, she got back to the office immediately. She needs to prepare for Mr. Dela Vega’s meeting with the board of directors later. When she got back, she had noticed the change of atmosphere at the office. The vibe was lighter and a little bit joyous. She took a notice of Cindy’s awestruck face from the reception and she knew that something good had happened. Mavis knew that she should immediately go back to the top floor where their office is but Cindy called her and she gossiped with her a little.

“Please update me later,” Cindy pleaded with her. Correction: she was love-struck.

“About what?” she asked her. But Mavis knew her duty by heart. She knew that she couldn’t disclose any information that would happen in the meeting later.

“About the ‘Office Saints’! Or rather, ‘Office Sins’!” Cindy said while screaming silently. Her eyes were all googly.

            “Excuse me, what?

“Oh, right. You’re still new here so you don’t know about them. I’m talking about the three cousins; Sir Rush, Sir Axe and Sir Tyler. The employees here dubbed them as the ‘Office Saints’ or ‘Office Sins’. If you’re a guy, you’d see them as saints. They’re being glorified by our male employees for their personality, manners, fashion and overall quality. I know that a lot of women would contest if Sir Rush ever has ‘good manners’ because he’s scary but they couldn’t deny the fact that he’s hot and gorgeous. So if you’re a woman, you’d see them as sins. You will sin through our company policies because of them. They’re so tempting. You’ll see my point later. It’s a rare occasion for the three of them to get together because Sir Tyler’s always away. So, you can’t really blame every one if they’re a bit on the clouds today,” Cindy told her rather excitedly.

            She obviously likes these guys.

Mavis just shook her head at Cindy. She couldn’t believe that DV Corp. has this kind of fad. But she has now understood why Ms. Chua and Mr. Castillo needed to do that skid during the interview process. She now understood why they took such lengths to carefully select Mr. Dela Vega’s executive assistant. Someone could really take interest with Mr. Dela Vega even if…his image was not that good with the employees.

Of course, someone would be interested with Mr. Dela Vega. Didn’t you see how hot and gorgeous he is? You can’t deny it! a part of her mind said to herself.

Yes, Mavis couldn’t deny the fact that Mr. Dela Vega’s really hot and gorgeous but she chose not to think about that to avoid making mistakes. Actually, she shouldn’t even think about Mr. Dela Vega like that because he’s her boss. And she should not breach their professional relationship.

Besides, she has a personal rule: no office romance allowed.
