Chapter Three

RUSH massaged both sides of his temple. Then, he let out a sigh in frustration. It’s already been almost a week ever since Rush fired his last executive assistant. Daena had been sending him different personnel from her own people—from the HR department. He thought that they’re more capable since they’ve been in the company for a long time already but, no. They still can’t keep up with him.

His previous executive assistants all can’t keep up with him. And Rush has been wondering why because all they need to do was work. The maximum duration of his assistants that lasts with him are just six months. And in those six months, the two months rendering of resignation is part of it. But most often he’s terminating them because of incompetency.

Roan—the assistant corporate secretary of the company’s legal department—was alright because she already knows his attitude and she was able to go along with his moods. But they needed to send Roan in the subsidiary that his cousin Tyler handles. That’s why Rush had no choice but to hire a new EA.

Rush opened the file that David sent him—it was the profile of the new executive assistant that they had hired. This one’s out of the norm. A previous call center agent. The desperation on Daena and David’s parts were too obvious. He regretted not being present during the interview process and wondered if this one would really be capable.

Mavis Policarpio graduated magna cum laude from St. Martin’s University. Rush liked that information a bit because SMU is one of the best business schools in the country. It was the reason why they sent his brother—Law—in that school. He wondered why Mavis Policarpio didn’t apply on their company five years ago though.

Reading on the file, Rush came to the conclusion that Mavis Policarpio was obviously the bread-winner of the family. Based on the obvious fact that among the four Policarpio sisters, she’s the only one with a job. The two younger sisters are still in school. One’s taking up Business Management and the other, law. Her family has a small gasoline station in their province. It means they’re not that tight on money but a small gasoline station only earns a little.

Rush came to asking himself as to why didn’t the woman just focus on developing their business. She’s been the team manager on Avira’s two accounts for four years. Why did she choose that path instead?

He had a lot of questions, but there were notes left by Daena and David about Mavis Policarpio’s background information. They had noted that the new EA was already expecting that her work wouldn’t have any vacations and rest days. Hmm…All of the applicants tend to be very amicable about their schedules “in the beginning”.

Emphasis on the last three words.

And according to David’s notes, his new EA does not tolerate office romance and that she even brushed off David’s advances. Why does she need to brush David off?

Rush immediately called David. “Why did my new EA brush you off? What did you do?” he immediately asked his chief legal counsel.

“You’re reading our notes?” David chuckled. “We just made sure that she won’t take advantage of you. Daena and I did a skit earlier to test her and she passed. She almost left immediately after I asked her out on a date,” he briefly explained.

Rush couldn’t help but roll his eyes at what David said. “I still can’t believe that you didn’t make her start today when you know for a fact that I badly need an assistant. I don’t care if she still has a month of rendering her resignation. She applied in this company which means, she should have been ready to start any time. Didn’t we put ‘urgent’ in our job posting?” he asked, seriously.

“Well, yes. But she still needs to make adjustments, Rush. She’s in the graveyard shift. It’s only going to be two days more of trouble for you and after that, Miss Policarpio will be with you. We’ll send an intern to accompany you to your meeting this afternoon,” David suggested.

“An intern? Are you f*cking kidding with me right now, David? Should I remind you what the f*ck happened five years ago when you sent me a damn intern for a friggin’ simple task?” he asked, frustrated.

David answered him with dead air.

“I thought so. If you can’t ask my new executive assistant to report to work by tomorrow, you’ll be my assistant until she reports to work, David,” he quickly said then he ended the call.

It’s in their company policy that an intern can’t go to his floor. Rush already has a trauma with interns. There was an intern back then who got pregnant and she made a huge mess by saying that the child was his. Heck, Rush didn’t even know her name. Their company made the headlines five years ago because of that and Rush didn’t want that to happen again.

That intern made him the talk of the town for being a monstrous boss. She posted a picture of him on social media telling the world how difficult and bad of a boss he was when he didn’t even call her names or called her stupid in her face. Which he should have because she was, by the way. Furthermore, that issue had landed the intern a lawsuit since she had violated the non-disclosure agreement that she signed with the company back then.

The truth is, Rush didn’t want to accept interns and trainees in their company. But because his grandmother Victoria Dela Vega—the president of the company and one of the richest businesswomen in the country—wants to, they still needed to accept interns to project a positive company image. Even though it has already been five years since his grandmother passed him the reins on managing the business, she still has a lot of say in the company. Not that he minded.

Rush’s grandmother was the best. The only complaint that he has with her is her incessant set up of blind dates with him. According to her, it was the dying wish of their grandfather—Henrico Dela Vega—to have a lot of grandsons. His regret back then was when they didn’t have a lot of children. But the truth is, they have three children—Henry Dela Vega—Rush’s father—Carmen Fontanilla and Georgina Pangilinan.

Henrico Dela Vega was grateful when his children was blessed with two sons each. They have a total of six grandchildren—Rush and his brother Law, Axel Pangilinan and his brother Roth and Tyler Fontanilla and his brother Travis. At least, the one who can continue the name of the Dela Vega doubled. What Henrico Dela Vega wanted was to have a lot of grandsons so that there would be a lot of them to continue the family business.

And since Rush is the eldest grandson with the Dela Vega name, he is now being pestered by his grandmother to get married already. Although, it was Tyler who gave in to their grandma first. He got married four years ago and he hasn't revealed it to the public who she is.

            Oh, the bother.
