CHAPTER 2

The following day, Emily arrived in the office an hour earlier. If she wanted to get Levi’s attention, she must excel during her probation period of three months. She believed that the nightmare would only stop if she could avenge her death! Jasmine was a bubbly young woman before Levi Ching entered into her life and then broke her heart after a few months of dating.

Although she has experience in doing sales, the industry where she came from was different from shipping and logistics. Even if she has a degree in customs administration, she had to refresh her mind for the common terms being used in the industry.

She was familiarizing the shipping rates and incoterms when her boss arrived. Immediately, she stood up to greet the man behind the successful brokerage company. “Good morning, sir.” She smiled at Mr. Eliakem Chavez and unlike Levi Ching who’s a sucker for beauty, Eliakem just nodded his head and didn’t smile at her.

Eliakem was suspicious when the head office assigned Emily Gosum at the branch he managed. He believed that the woman was a spy sent by his father to monitor his movements. “Aren’t you too early, Ms. Gosum?” He inquired while checking the time on his expensive wristwatch.

“I just live nearby, sir.” She reasoned out but the way Eliakem’s morning scowl made her conscious and she kept on adjusting her mini-skirt.

“Coming early to the office won’t make you an employee of the month, Miss Gosum, and I will appreciate it if you will come on time, not before.” He disliked an employee who assumed that coming to work earlier or going home late would make her the most productive in the company. Maybe he should talk to the man-in-charge not to let anyone in before the regular office hours.

Emily bit her lower lip in embarrassment. She had no idea that her boss could get cranky in the morning. “I’m sorry, sir.” She apologized that she made him uncomfortable with her presence.

For a moment, he felt bad for being harsh on her. It’s her second day in the office and yet he’s already being cruel to his new employee. “Inform Levi to see me in the office when he comes,” he instructed before leaving.

Emily could only stare at his broad shoulder when he left but she couldn’t let her boss’s treatment to her dampened her spirit. She should focus on her agenda and that’s to make Levi fall for her, then she would trample his heart into the ground! She would make him cry with blood!

Just wait, Levi!

Emily’s teeth chattered inside her mouth as she imagined several ways to punish him soon. She tried to ignore the awkwardness after her conversation with Eliakem Chavez, but she couldn’t concentrate on reviewing the incoterms that were commonly used in EC. She stood up and proceeded to the pantry to get a cup of coffee because she needed something to calm her nerves.

With a cup of hot coffee on her hand, she left the pantry and returned to her table. She just sat down when Levi came and she forced her sweetest smile at him. “Good morning, sir. Coffee?” She offered to make him a cup.

Levi smiled back at Emily and accepted her offer to make him a cup. “No sugar please,” he told her.

“Sure,” she replied and went back to the pantry to get him his coffee. In a jiffy, she was back to their working station and gave it to Levi. “Camilla said that you will teach me how to create a quotation in the system today,” she informed Levi about her conversation with his secretary yesterday.

“Yes, but before that, you need to know how to provide our best rate to the clients,” Levi replied as he began to sip the black coffee that Emily made for him. Then, he turned on his computer and opened his email. He waited for a few minutes until the outlook finished loading the new emails. “Come and check it,” he told her to sit down in front of his computer.

Emily followed his instruction and sat down on his swivel chair. Two hundred emails? Wow, how would he manage to reply to all of them daily? “Are you telling me to send them a reply?” She asked for confirmation.

“Yes,” he replied.

Replying emails to clients wasn’t new to her but she was nervous to open the first email on his inbox. She let out a deep breath before she clicked it open, and unconsciously, she adjusted her blouse to give Levi a little glimpse of her asset. “She asked for our best rate to Singapore,” she said after reading the email.

“Okay, then check our rates and tell me how much will you give her,” Levi instructed.

Emily opened the excel file for their tariff rates and search for Singapore. As per instruction, their standard mark-up was twenty-five percent of the tariff rates, but on their tariff, it was zero. “I think there’s a mistake, this one here is zero.” She showed Levi the highlighted item under Singapore.

“Since our main office is in Singapore, sending export cargoes from Cebu to SG is free, but we can’t offer that to our client or else they can’t claim for insurance,” Levi explained.

“I understand. So I can offer any amount above zero as long as it’s not so much,” she said.

“Brilliant! So how much are you going to offer to her?” Levi asked.

“One dollar per cbm,” she answered, and when Levi nodded, she was proud of herself and excitement consumed her well-being. The tariff rates and schedules were easy to understand, so after the first email, she continued with the rest and only asked Levi if it was complicated for her. She focused on the export rates first because it was easier for her and before the day ended, she managed to answer most of the inquiries about exportation.

“Keep up the good work, Emily.” Levi acknowledged her effort during the first day of their training. The woman was a fast learner and he could tell that she would become one of the best sales executives at EC Brokerage.

“Oh my God! I forgot to tell you something, sir.” Emily’s eyes widen when she recalled what Eliakem told her in the morning.

“What is it?” Levi was worried about the woman’s expression as if it was a matter of life and death.

“Mr. Chaves said he wanted to talk to you,” she said.

Levi couldn’t recall when Eliakem approached Emily and he suspected that she was lying. “When did you talk to him?” He asked.

“This morning,” Emily answered.

“WHAT? Oh my God, Emily! What have you done? He must have something important to tell me!” He yelled at Emily for being forgetful.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Ching. It completely slipped on my mind,” she reasoned out.

Levi bit his lip when he tried to control himself from yelling at her. “Next time, please be careful especially when it’s about our boss. You can go home now,” he dismissed her but he felt bad for yelling at the woman as he walked towards Eliakem's office.
