Chapter 6 Mother In Law

I sat on the bench obediently, watching Mingyu take out his iPhone when hurrying to the restroom. I sneer and follow behind quietly. I move closer to the door of the men's room, putting my ear against the door. I cannot hear them clearly, but it's obvious Mingyu is arguing with someone on the phone.

Good!

Mingyu cannot find out the truth even if he goes to the restaurant. The waitress would not interfere with something not related to her. Through the CCTV, he can only see me smiling to Ting all the way and cannot hear my talking. Oh, he can see how Ting splashes water one me as well. I was the innocent one who was startled and helpless when all these happened.

People who have done something wrong would feel guilty. From ancient to now, countless mistresses provoke the wife, trying to steal the wife's position. Thanks to my guideline, Mingyu now thinks Zhang Ting is running out of patience.

I sit back to the bench before Mingyu comes out. Mingyu feels sad when he sees me hurt and painful, "Let's go home and take a rest. I have asked for leave. I'll ask my mom to take care of you tomorrow."

I nod. I have met my mother in low for a couple of times, one at our wedding while the other is the new year. I have no feelings for her since we never live together. To get Mingyu back, I agree to let her come to look after me.

When I get home, Mingyue is still watching TV. She has been here for several days because of the sports meeting. I think she'll leave the day after tomorrow.

"Mingyue, Wenjie's arms got hurt. You need to make supper tonight."

Mingyue comes to check my arm. When she sees that my arm is bandaged, she doesn't seem to be worried or to say anything to comfort me, but complains, "Why should I come all the way to take care of you two? It sucks!"

Mingyu glares at her. She doesn't dare to talk anymore but make noises in the kitchen to vent her anger.

Mingyu keeps putting food in my bowl at dinner. He wants to make it up but this only hurts me even more.

After dinner, I go to sleep early. When Mingyu believes I am sleeping, he secretly goes to the balcony and closes the door. He's calling someone.

"I'm warning you. Don't meet her again. I cannot believe that you would do this. Wen is innocent and kind. She won't say that to you for no reason. She had never doubted me before. You're the one who's talking nonsense."

"Well. You don't have to explain it anymore. We'll talk about it in the office tomorrow.

When he hangs up the phone, I close my eyes immediately to pretend that I'm sleeping, but my whole body is stiff.

Mingyu is my husband. I don't want to be with him in this way now. I have to be careful to win his heart back, but his heart is mine. Why should I do this?

The world is too complicated, so do people living in it. Once a person gets polluted, no matter how hard you try to clear it, the stain will be still on him.

Since my mother in law will come today, I get up early. Though my arm is wounded, my feet are all right. Mingyu has to go to work, and the job of picking up my mother in law is on me. I have to do it because she is illiterate and would easily get lost in big cities. Compared to call the police when she is lost, I would rather pick her up voluntarily to the train station.

I told Mingyu that I'd go pick up her mother. He smiled and asked me to stay at home because Mingyue could do it. I shake my head and tell him that his mother is also my mother. As a daughter, I should do it.

My words and action entirely move Mingyu that he kisses me hard before going to work.

Since I cannot drive on my own, I take a taxi, and Mingyue goes together with me. I don't know how to communicate with her. I don't want to figure it out either. Mingyue turns a blind eye to me after I told her to take off my dress even though I have brought so many new pieces for her.

When we stand still at the exit, waiting for my mother in law.

A middle-aged woman in coarse clothes comes out with a big plastic bag in her hand after a while. When I am about to go forward, Mingyue cuts in and holds her hand, "Mom!"

My mother in law smiles back to Mingyue, but her smile fades away immediately when she sees me. She looks me indifferently and questions me seriously, "Where is Mingyu?"

"He's in the company?" I respond with a warm smile.

She nods and pulls out two nasty boys and hands them to me, "They are your uncle's grandsons. Take good care of them. Maybe you can give birth to a boy soon."

I am shocked. I have known that she is not happy because I am not pregnant after getting married for one year. She even calls Mingyu from time to time to question whether it is because of my health condition. Previously, I pretend to know nothing about it. I have plans about my baby, but since Mingyu is cheating on me, it would be a burden to both of us if I get pregnant.

"Mom, my hand is hurt, so I may not look after them," I protest reasonably.

She glances at my arm and sneers, "This can barely be regarded as a wound in the country. Even if you have had a big surgery, you should get up and work hard. You are too sissy and fragile to endure any small pain. If you were living in our village, you would be scolded to death by relatives and neighbors."

Up to now, I start to realize keeping silent would be the best, so I don't talk anymore but smile at them.

The boys are about 7 or 8 years old. It's the first time for them to come to the city. At first, they are obedient, but when they get familiar with the surroundings and know that I am bullied by my mother in law, they start to make trouble. They even prick my arms, which is really hurt. When my mother in law sees that, she only tells them to stop but never scolds them.

When we get home, the boys rush in without taking off shoes, so does my mother in law.

When I ask them to take off shoes first, my mother in law immediately becomes unhappy and questions whether I am getting sick of them.

I don't know how to explain it. Anyone with eyes can see the footprint on the floor. How dare they turn back to ask me that? However, I have to endure it.

Mingyue drags her mother on the sofa and continues to watch the boring TV series. They are indeed mother and daughter. They have the same taste, and both of them laugh out loud while the boys run after each other in the living room: it's not my home anymore.

This is especially true when I see the muddy footprints on the floor. It makes me headache.

Mingyu is filial to his mother, or to be more exact foolish filial. I cannot argue with her if I want to win Mingyu back, so I have no choice but to clean up the mess even though my arms hurt. However, the boys keep messing up, and I have to give up.

I am exhausted and hurt. When I sit on the sofa to take a rest, my mother in law takes a look at me and says, "Jiewen, I'm starving. Go prepare lunch for us."

"Mom, my arms hurt, and I cannot cook." I try my best to suppress my anger.

"That's true. I cook on my own yesterday."

On hearing Mingyue's words, my mother-in-law gets angry, and her face darkens, "why can't you cook? Just because of the minor injury on your arm? You have to know that I went to harvest the crops the next day after I got birth to Mingyu. All villagers scold your cousin's wife because she always goes to the clinic when she gets a fever."
