Chapter Two: Sister-in-law

"Mingyue, here you are."

I greet her and stare at her, or to be more exact, her adress. No, my dress. This is what I have bought after saving money for months. It worths a lot, and I cherish it like my baby. It has been exhibited in my closet, and I decide to wear it at the annual dinner.

Mingyue feels my hostility and turns to me, yawning, "Sis, I'm starving. My brother asks you to make dinner for me."

"Mingyue, you're wearing my dress."

"I know, but my brother says I can take whatever I like away. Sis, could you please give this dress to me? You can buy another one."

I try my best to not lose my temper, but fire is still burning in my eyes, "This is mine."

Mingyue finally becomes aware of my anger and purses her lips, unhappily. She stands up, takes the dress off, and throws it on the floor, "Then I'll return it to you, stingy bitch. I'll call my brother."

She walks to the balcony and steps on the dress on purpose. The mud print is dazzling and piercing my heart.

"Hi, brother, when will you come home? Make it fast. Your wife doesn't cook for me and doesn't allow me to wear her clothes. I forget to take my clothes when I come here. Can you help me buy some on your way home?"

She raises her voice on purpose, and I can hear her clearly. But I don't care. I pick up the dress and pat the mud. My heart is bleeding when I see my beloved dress has been ruined.

When Mingyue hangs up the phone, another waves of ringtone starts echoing in the room. I know it's from Mingyu, and I don't pick it up because I'm not in the mood to fight with him right now.

Mingyue provokingly glances at me, "Pick it up! It's from my brother."

Taking a look at her would be a waste of my time. I turn back to the kitchen to continue cooking with my trembling hands.

Mingyu is born and bred in rural areas. The financial condition of his family is not good. But I like his personality and warm smile, so as the beautiful landscape in his hometown. That's why I choose to marry him even though my parents tell me he's not suitable for me. It is not until we get married that I realize how vicious and pathetic his family is.

When I am cooking in the kitchen, Mingyu comes back. His face darkens. Mingyue is humming to the music arrogantly in the living room, but when she sees Mingyu, tears start welling up in her eyes.

"Brother~" her voice is low, aggrieved, and filled with hatred and grievances.

"Mingyue, have you had dinner?"

"Not yet. Brother, have I done anything wrong again? My sister in law is not happy. Could you please tell her that I'll never wear her clothes anymore."

Mingyu hates to see his sister being unhappy. He walks to the kitchen for me and says emotionlessly, "Jiewen, Mingyue is still a child. Why do you being particular to a child for a dress?"

I am making duck soup, Mingyue's favorite. I don't say much but turn back, smiling, "I think you misunderstand it. I'm making duck soup. Mingyue will love it. I'll take her to the shopping mall after dinner. You know I am an adult, and Mingyue is still a child. My clothes are surely not suitable for her. She should wear something younger and brighter."

I don't cry or argue with Mingyu: this is beyond Mingyue's expectation. Mingyu is satisfied with my explaination. He holds me in his arms and kisses me, "I know you're the best."

I narrow my eyes and glare at Mingyue. I love to see her being unhappy.

After dinner, I go shopping with Mingyue and buy many clothes for her. Even though the price of each one is not high, it still takes six thousand bucks. Whenever I see her smiling with the new outfit, it reminds me of the mud on my dress.

At night, I turn and toss on the bed, thinking about the weird expression on Zhang Qiang's face when he hands the USB to me. The USB is lying in my wallet, and I haven't seen it yet. I have no courage to do it. Sometimes, deceiving myself can be useful as well.

The next morning, I am awakened by a loud noise from the kitchen. I rush to the kitchen and find Mingyue is preparing breakfast. I yawn and warn her, "Mingyue, quiet down. It's still early, and everybody is still asleep."

Mingyue sneers at me, "My mother says a woman should get up early after getting married. If not, others would gossip about it. Only lazy woman would get up late."

I don't know how to communicate with those nonsense people. This is my home, not in the countryside. People in the city get up late and go to work without having breakfast.

I cannot sleep anymore. I have no choice but to take over the cooker in her hand, "I'll do it."

Mingyue happily gives it to me as if it would burn her.

When the porridge is ready, I ask her to have breakfast, but only to find her sleep tight with the pillow in her hand when I open her door. She's even snoring.

What can I do? Wake her up? Then another fight will follow. I just want a peaceful life, so I shake my head and close the door quietly.

After getting everything done, I go to the company. I am sleepy and cannot help yawning. It's not a busy day, but I am exhausted. I keep writing i1 on my notebook.

My colleague notices that I'm daydreaming and comes to me, but only to find that I'm writing nonsense on the notebook. She frowns and whispers to me, "Wen, are you fantasizing about man?"

Her questions bring me back. "Fantasizing man? Wake up, please. Spring is over. I'm a flower, but has already been taken."

"If not, why do you write so many 'I love you' ?"

Her word surprises me, and I take another look at the i1.

"How do you know it means 'I love you'?"

She looks at me as if I am an idiot. "You can insult me, but can't insult my intelligence. 'i' pronounces ''love", while '1' means 'you.'

Her words shock me like electricity.

"Aren't you feel tired of going all the way to the other side of the city to have lunch with your husband?"

"We just get married. It's normal for us to stay together. How will I feel tired? You and Mingyu used to be like that as well."

Yes, it's true. When we start dating, I often go to the east to have lunch with him and is mocked by my friends.

"I hear that a new Japanese restaurant is open today. Let's go have noodles and sushi. My treat."

Zhang is a foodie. Once she hears that she can have a fine dinner and doesn't need to pay for it, she smiles and says yes immediately, "Of course, but I need to take your car."

OMG. She even wants to save gas.

Her husband and Mingyu work in the same building. After ordering two large size noodles, her husband comes over. I blink to her and says, "I'll go first and leave it to you. Bone appetize."

I pack another two noodles and walk to Mingyu's office. I want to surprise him. I have been here before we get married. When I come to send him the lunch box I make, everyone in the office envies Mingyu. Today, I gonna do it one more time, recalling our sweet memories.
