Chapter Three: Having Lunch with Mingyu

Mingyu's company is on the 19th floor. When I got to the front desk, a young girl greets me with a big smile, "Hey, what sends you here today? Mingyu is still in the meeting room. Would you please take a seat and wait for a while?"

How sweet! She still remembers me. It's been a year since the last time I came here.

I thank her smiley and sit down at the lobby with the noodles in my hand, taking out my phone to play candy crush to kill time.

"Jing, give me the information of all customers in Shanghai before 1 p.m. I need it for the meeting."

The voice is quite familiar. I look up and find it's the girl who sent Mingyu home when he was drunk a few days ago.

She doesn't find me since she is facing the Jing, while I am sitting at the lobby corner.

When she walks away, I put the take-aways on the table and walk to Jing. I pretend to be gossip and whisper to her, "Who's that? She's really a beauty. Is she seeing anyone? My cousin is still single."

Gossiping is a girl's nature, so is matchmaking. Contempt shows up on her face when she realizes who I am talking to. She sneers and says, "Sis, she's the new sales leader. She has been here for about half a year. Honesty, she is a peacock. You'd better find a better one for your cousin."

I can read between the lines, so I don't ask anything further but smile to cover up the embarrassment.

The front desk has the contacts of the whole company. When I am talking with Jing, I keep peeping at her computer. I try to match each one with the stranger number who sent i1 to Mingyu and don't find anyone. I sigh out of relief in my heart.

"Jing, the meeting is dismissed. Come clean the meeting room, please."

"Okay. On my way."

"Sis, the meeting is over. I'll go get Mingyu for you." She smiles and dashes away. Before long, Mingyu comes out with a young lady following behind. It's the girl who sits on my spot and sends Mingyu home.

"Jiewen, why are you here?" Mingyu is surprised to see me.

I smile back and hand him the take-away.

"To have lunch with you."

"Mingyu, we need to have lunch with the VIP customer. They are waiting." The girl reminds my husband.

I'm disappointed to hear that, and whisper to Mingyu, "I'm already here. At least you should take some. If you have lunch with those customers, you would definitely drink a lot. Your stomach will get hurt if you don't take something previously."

"Ting, you can go first," Mingyu hesitates and turns around to the girl.

"So you're Ting. 'Ting' means a pretty girl with a nice figure. What a lovely name. Thank you so much for sending Mingyu home."

She smiles to me politely, but her eyes are filled with indifference and alert, "Not a big deal. He's my colleague."

My warm welcome is refused by her indifference, and this makes me quite unhappy.

"Mingyu, I'll go now. Don't take it too long and get late."

When she leaves, Mingyu takes me to an empty meeting room and enjoins me when he's taking the noodle, "Jiewen, there is no need to come here all the way from the west. It's too far away. You have to take a lot of time, and you would be exhausted. If I have an appointment with clients, you will come for nothing."

Mingyu had forgotten how happy he was when I sent the lunch box to him before we got married. Right now, the complaint has replaced happiness.

After lunch, I go back to work with my friend. She is full and got hiccups because of having too much. In contrast, I haven't eaten anything but I am not hungry at all.

I close my eyes, thinking about the way that Ting looks at me. There is too much information in her eyesight that I have to think carefully about it over and over. It's interesting.

I never make quick conclusions about something unclear, but I have to figure out whether Mingyu is cheating on me or not.

"Zhang, is there anyone in the computer center?"

Zhang is busy flirting with her husband through WeChat, "The PC guy is off duty this afternoon," she replies with her eyes and hearts focused on the phone.

I stand up and refresh myself in the restroom to calm myself down. After that, I take the USB to the PC room. Like Zhang says, no one is there.

The video is a bit dark, but fortunately, it's very clear. I recognized Mingyu at first sight. He sat next to a chubby man, so did Ting. They laughed and drank with the man. It's a typical scene in business networking.

This lasted for about twenty minutes. I start wondering if I am really overthinking.

Just as I am about to laugh at myself for being suspicious, the chubby man got up and went to the restroom. Mingyu and Ting, who were separated by him, sat closer instantly. Ting whispered something to him, and they started kissing crazily, French style, of course.

Cold is all I can feel. Goosebumps dance on my skin while blood rushes into my brain. I pull out the USB and walk out of the room like nothing has happened.

However, my hands tremble out of control, so do my feet. It takes me quite a while to go back to my cube. I keep telling myself that Mingyu is just treating the VIP client and mistakens Ting as me when he gets drunk. It's a mistake. No, it's an accident.

After getting off work, I go to the supermarket and prepare dinner for Mingyue. She is my queen now.

When I get home, Mingyue, lying on the sofa, is enjoying Korean drama. She is sobbing. I've watched it as well. The leading female character gets brain tumors and leaves the leading male character to die alone because she doesn't want to be a burden. Her boyfriend finds her and marries her no matter what. It's an ode for true love. It's called an ode because it's rare in reality.

I ignore her and go directly to the kitchen to cook a few more dishes. When all dishes are put on the dinner table, Mingyu is still not here. However, Mingyue doesn't want to wait for him to have dinner together. She grabs the chopsticks and gets started. After taking a few bites, she puts her favorite dish, stewed beef, in front of her. She prefers meat to vegetables. I know it. That's why I only prepare one meat dish.

I phone Mingyu, asking him when he will come back. It's quite noisy on his side. Once again, he has to have dinner with his VIP clients. I cut off the line and go back to the dinner table, gulping down the tofu without chewing.

When I get all plates washed, Mingyue is still watching her beloved TV series. I don't want to stay in the same space with her, so I lock myself in the bedroom and start playing candy crush. The phone I'm using is iPhone X, so is Mingyu. It's a gift that Mingyu gives to me when on my last birthday.

Mingyu has no idea that I have opened the location sharing feature on his phone. I set this because this is an excellent way to get the phone back if it's robbed or stolen. Two iPhone X really cost a lot.

Though we share our locations, I have never tracked his whereabouts before. It's boring and nonsense.

However, the time has come. It makes sense now.

Mingyu's location appears on my phone. It shows that he's now in a restaurant. After a while, it starts moving and stops at a motel—a motel rather than a hotel.

I'm not a fool. I know why a man would go to a motel at night.

I laugh out loud with tears rolling down. I'd rather be a fool.
