The Lonely Prodigy

Prologue - Chapter 1

In this world of both mortals and beast kin, gods and demons, creatures of magic, and legendary heroes, a prodigy was born.

“It hurts…

But I’m fine

It’s painful

But I can handle it

I’m lonely

But I’m used to it

It’s suffocating

But I no longer need to breathe

Oh…

Can I take back my words?

I’m not fine at all…

I never was and may never be”

The girl’s voice meekly resounded as she closed herself off from the world.

Opening her eyes to wake from her slumber, Solia’s delicate and long lashes quivered as they revealed a pair of deep bloody red eyes which signified her great affinity with magic, and as she slowly got up from her bed, her eyes laid rest on the usual sights she meets day by day: blood splatters by the windows and a pile of bodies by her door frame which lacked a door.

The moment she was born, her fate of being one of the empire’s magicians was sealed when her pair of beautiful irises first saw daylight hence her parents immediately sold her to a count’s family for they were measly slaves who were captured from the war against the bordering country, thus her family barely earning enough to get by the day.

However, one miscalculation her family had was the fact that the greater one’s affinity with magic was, the higher the capability and the capacity was of one’s brain along with a longer lifespan, especially when taking into account details and inputting them into memory.

With Solia’s legendary affinity with magic that can only be found once in every thousands of decades, her brain started taking in information the moment her presence met directly with the world. Therefore, despite being sold off by her family before she was even given a name, she never once raised a ruckus within the household of the Count who had bought her.

Though the household was merely that of a Count’s, it was known for their abundance in the production of successful and powerful magicians, thus even the royal family had to give them face and walk around them as if they were treading on thin ice. After all, a single order from their household can lead to an empire’s destruction if they ever make use of every single mage their household has produced.

Looking at the puddle of blood in front of her bed, Solia reached out towards the bell by her bedside table and rang it a few times before a pair of petite but cold maids arrived and efficiently cleaned up the mess in an accustomed manner.

No sooner than later, the maids finished cleaning up and a lean golden headed young lad with a pair of emerald green eyes arrived at her door frame.

“Your highness” The pair of maids bowed in greeting before shuffling out of the room with reddened cheeks. However, in Solia’s case, she simply turned her gaze straight towards the only man who treated her kindly before sighing and turning her eyes away from him.

“How have you been, Solia?” The man stepped into the room and made his way towards the figure of the girl sitting on her bed with skin pale as snow as her delicate locks dangled by her waist, looking like they had been dipped into the deep ocean with her head of midnight-blue serving as a further emphasis on the beautiful contrast between crimson and the night sky.

“I’ve been quite well, Prince Frederick” Solia didn’t bother sparing another glace at the man wearing a gentle smile that swooned the entire kingdom for she knew that he was merely being kind to her for the sake of keeping her control.

The Guard Dog of the Royal Family…she had become known for that as all kinds of assassination attempts became useless the moment she had been assigned to guard the empire’s royal family and started staying in the palace.

However, even before she acquired her current mission, her name had already spread throughout the continent as she was dubbed “The Sorceress”, signifying that her magical prowess had been recognized to have reached the level defying the heavens.

Reaching out with one hand, the man took up one of her locks and placed a kiss on it before looking at Solia with a seemingly warm gaze. In response to this, Solia smoothly pulled her hair away from the man’s grasp before returning a polite smile without batting an eyelash.

“Your highness, please do avoid these acts even when we’re not in public…” She slowly stood up from her bed and headed towards her dressing table with the same smile plastered on her face before continuing, “And you need not to worry of me betraying this empire for my birth parents belong here may it be in life or death”

Hearing those words coming out of that doll-like figure, Frederick was taken aback that his family’s suspicions towards her had already been found out. Within a mere second, he finally dropped his pretense of that of a “kind gentleman” as his gaze turned cold.

“It’s good to know that you know your place then, mutt” The lean lad then strode out of the room without taking another glance back.

Yes, it had always been like this, even her time at the Count’s mansion had been similar. Her powers and potential were far too fearsome that people either completely avoided her or went up to her, simply to flatter her with words like a broken record in an attempt to gain her favor.

Human warmth, she had always lacked such a thing ever since she stepped into this world. She was far too powerful and feared amongst the populace, and the closer one was to her, the more pressure they felt as they proceeded to tread around this powerhouse while putting up all kinds of pretense.

She knew not of loneliness for she never had anyone by her side nor did she know of how much people can mean to one another. All she knew was that power ruled the world, but the more power one has, the more restrictions are placed onto them.

Preparing herself for the day, she headed towards the king’s study as she was summoned there early in the morning.

“You may enter” An aloof voice sounded from the other side and as Solia entered the room, she was met with two figures: The Count who bought her years ago and the King of the kingdom with the same head of gold as that of the young man’s who invaded her room earlier.
