CHAPTER 4 – The Marriage Certificate

-Asha-

I looked out of the glass window wall of my apartment, letting my skin absorb the sunlight that entered the room. As usual, my normal days in my home city started like this, quiet, tranquil and cold. I turned away from the window and went to take a shower and change. I always go to the office earlier than the intended time that I should be there but actually, a CEO never has regular hours of work, it can never apply to us since we can sleep in the office or be in a business meeting somewhere in the world at this time.

When I arrived at the company, there were still few people this time but the receptionists area and the guards are never absent in this time. I accepted their greeting and headed to the elevator where I saw an unfamiliar young girl carrying a set of heavy files in the elevator when it opened. She began to get flustered when she saw me.

“I’m sorry. I’ll get off right away.” She hurriedly said when I entered the elevator without a word. She really tried to get off.

“There’s no need.” I said immediately and reflexively held her back by her collar before retrieving my hands back as quickly after she stumbled back and regained her balance. I felt a sense of embarrassment.

“Thank you ma’am.” She meekly said as the doors closed. We were both quiet for a second.

“Are you a new employee?” I asked when I couldn’t really remember her.

“No ma’am, just an intern.” I nodded and did not pay attention to her anymore when I saw her conflicted state. Am I that scary? I could see that she’s really conflicted if she should focus on me or on the heavy files that she was carrying, she had fixed her hold on the files so many times.

The elevator doors opened before I could offer a hand and she immediately walked out before turning and bowing to me. It’s just a thought but I think she’s rather cute. Maybe if my parent’s didn’t die and I started as an intern, I would have been a bit like her. I smiled bitterly before the doors opened. I entered my office and started immediately with the files neatly stacked on my table.

At exactly 10 am, Gemini arrived in my office. As usual he did not say a word when he entered and handed me an envelope. He then retreated once again into a corner. I could only sigh inwardly. He hasn’t treated me any less different when I was still with Zeus. I’m a bit touched that nothing changed for him because if it were other people, Gemini is forced to speak out of respect but if he’d known you for a long time, he didn’t need to speak. I don’t know much about him but this were the things I’ve observed and Zeus didn’t talk about him aside from telling me that they grew up together. I didn’t realize I was actually looking at Gemini when I was having these thoughts until he turned to stare back. I could not help but think he’s really handsome with his blue eyes and dark brown hair combined with his pale skin and also wearing a suit. I probably didn’t notice it before because I was busy looking at Zeus. When I realized we were still staring at each other, I immediately turned my attention to the envelope in my hands.

As expected of Zeus, he didn’t disappoint me. The envelope contains a marriage certificate; all the necessary information already filled out, the only thing missing was my signature. This was what I also meant when I wanted to marry secretly but does that mean he had read my message? I signed the marriage certificate and sealed it back.

“Are you going straight to the government office to submit this?” I could not help asking when I handed the envelope back to Gemini.

“Yes and my master will be picking you up this afternoon. Please make yourself available.” Gemini said and left quickly, not giving me enough time to ask what he meant.

Before long, I got engrossed with my work and time passed by quickly and people started to come in and out of my office that I did notice the time.

-Zeus-

I arrived at Asha’s company before 1 pm but before I could step inside, I met Andrew. He was surprised to see me but he suddenly gave a determined look and approached me. In the end his voice carried a tint of nervousness. I can’t blame him for behaving like this even though he is older than me in human years. As I said, I am a vampire and he is a human, it is simply a prey and predator relationship.

“Mr. Mason, I would like to speak to you for a moment.” I nodded and he led the way to where I suspected as his office. He shut the door tightly when we were inside while Gemini stayed outside but he is also a vampire, I doubt that the doors would stop him from hearing.

“So Mr. Jacobs, what did you want to talk about?” I asked to initiate the conversion when he suddenly turned silent while staring at me in nervousness. He composed himself.

“After you get married with the madam, please take care of her and make her happy.” Andrew started and his boost of confidence returned. “I didn’t know why the two of you separated after her parent’s death and I won’t ask because that is both your personal business. It’s just that after her parent’s death, I had started seeing her like my own daughter and I’m telling you that she had it rough; she didn’t even have time to properly mourn her parents before she was thrown into the chaos that the company encountered. This company was managed by both of her parent’s before their death and to suddenly let the young miss handle it alone made things difficult when she sat down as the new CEO. The shareholders and the investors did not trust her, some even left, and her relatives are always constantly trying to attack her. It was a mess back then and she was smart but naïve to the hidden dangers of this line of business, she suffered a lot and it changed her. The company started to become stable and progress but the young miss had also given up herself. I had known her since she was a teenager so I could clearly see the differences, she was cheerful and expressive before but now, she’s like a human driven only by work.

There was silence when Andrew stopped speaking. I had known of all the things that happened when Asha took her place as the CEO 4 years ago, I had kept a close eye on her back then and I remembered helping her with some of the local businesses that her company controlled but for me that was not even enough to really help her, I remembered feeling angry and helpless and realizing that I was really obsessed with Asha. As to how she had changed, I’ll see for myself but I am confident that she will still be Asha to me.

“I was feeling helpless for her because I couldn’t do anything to take her out of the prison she made for herself. However, it was the other day that I saw it, a glimpse of her old self after she said that she was getting married to you. She must not realize it but I really did see it. I thought then that I had to talk to you.

“I know. Thank you for your concern Mr. Jacobs.” I said and I got up.

“Do you really understand?

“I understand. I will never let her go again.

Someone led me to Asha’s office and I didn’t hesitate in opening the door to her office to see her. She had looked up and was surprised to see me but I just stood there to look at her. She had cut her black hair short, exposing her slender neck but Andrew was right, her dark green eyes that I loved the most had lost its light. However, as if though to emit something, her white business suit made her appear like an angel to me when she stood up.
