06. Working with the Devil

The sun was shining brightly outside, sunlight glimmered through my curtains. I could see the dust floating around in the very air I was breathing. Now usually I wasn't a morning person but that day something was wrong with me. I was unusually nervous that I was rolling around on my bed. I guess I had one of those sleepless nights. Or maybe I was terrified of stepping into that office again. Well, particularly since I signed that contract. I can still hear his sharp words echoing in my ears, again and again like it was being played on a loop.

And remember when you sign that contract you have to do whatever I say! Whatever I say. Whatever I say..

I couldn't get his voice out of my head. It was 6'o clock in the morning and I was lying wide awake on my bed. Like seriously, I woke up before my alarm. I tried to get undercovers and pretend to hide under my bedsheet but I guess reality doesn't work like that. I quickly got into the shower and I let the warm water cleanse my body. Showers were always relaxing, it was like the only time I had for myself, With me and only my thoughts. If I had the luxury to stay on a hot tub the whole day then that would definitely be my own paradise. After I got out and dried myself first and I swiftly changed into a navy shirt and pants but I added that businesslike look with a blazer. I curled my hair and gave it a wavy look since I had the time to spare. I didn't put much time into my make up since I didn't think it was essential when I was in the devil's office. But I did line my eyes with a kajal and I had baby pink lip gloss on.

I didn't want to make the mistake of taking my coffee to office, so I made my own coffee at home and it was horrible of course, yet I had to endure it. I was actually a brunch kinda person, so I just had an apple and walked out of my apartment. I reached my office 10 mins earlier to my actual reporting time. Cause I didn't want to risk getting late since I didn't exactly get on the right foot with my boss in the first place and he wasn't fond of me so I tried my best not to give him more reasons to loathe me.

I reached my floor and to my surprise, I was greeted with smiles by the receptionist. She was more friendly to me than the previous day. She said she was instructed to show me to my office. Wow, I had my own office! This was exciting after spending fives years in a cubicle. There were two doors in from of me, one was a majestic wooden door with some serious woodwork. It looked classy and elegant as it matched the flooring.

"This is Mr Hunt's office!" The receptionist said suddenly.

"You don't say!" I mumbled.

I noticed another door that was in a little distance from his office. That door was made of glass, although I can't complain the glass door had small patterns of paintings on it which was really pretty. I guess this place wasn't so dull as I thought it was. The glass door was spotless. The receptionist twisted the key on the lock and the door swung open. We went inside, the office was very spacious, there was a huge table that was perfect for the room. For starters, it was in my favourite colour 'Black'. And guess what I even had those roller chairs. I tried to withhold my excitement to myself since I was an inch away from making a fool out of myself in front of the receptionist.

"I hope you like your office!" The receptionist exclaimed as she noticed that stupid grin on my face.

"Um. Yeah, It's alright I guess!" I said trying to sound calm.

"Sure. Ms.Paxton!" She smiled.

"Uh..no, you can call me June!" I said instantly.

"No, I can't! I mean Mr Hunt doesn't like it when employees get unprofessional!" She whispered slowly.

Now everything makes sense, that's why people here never smile.

"It's just a name!" I whispered back.

"I know.. But I like my job more!" She said looking at me.

"Alright. What else?" I asked looking annoyed.

"I am sorry Ms.Paxton! I didn't get you?" She asked looking confused.

"What are the other rules here?" I asked making air quotes.

"Well..you can't shut the drapes in your office while working, you can't open the windows anywhere in this building since Mr Hunt has a kinda dust allergy, You can't be taking leave without the knowledge of Mr Hunt and..." She started listening out the rules.

She was going on listing rules that it almost gave me a migraine.

"Wait. You know what? Just email the list!" I said as sarcasm was dripping from my words.

"Sure!" She said and smiled like a robot.

"Wait. I read 'The Common procedure on the employee's absence ' on your website and there was no rule about mentioning it to Mr Hunt before my absence!" I said crossing my arms.

"Oh yes! Since you are the executive assistant secretary of Mr Hunt, you will have separate rules and regulations." She said looking expressionless.

"Uh-huh. Gr-Great!" I shuttered.

Wow. That makes me feel special! I am sure, the devil himself designed this to torment me.

"It's none of my concerns but Ms.Paxton you were supposed to get Mr Hunt's coffee every day and I couldn't help but notice you walked into the office empty-handed today, So I took the liberty to get the coffee! I hope that's okay? " She asked looking hesitant.

"Of course! Oh my god. You are like a lifesaver!" I exclaimed in relief.

"Um..it's no big deal!" She half-smiled.

"I owe you one big time! I am sorry, I didn't know. It's my first-day so.." I shuttered.

"It's okay. I will explain everything to you!" She said with a small smile.

"You mean like I am gonna have an orientation!" I asked raising my eyebrow.

"Sure. Why not?" She giggled.

Wow... Did I just make a friend here?

"I am sorry...but I didn't catch your name?" I asked her with a smile.

"It's Mia Lancaster, Ms.Paxton!" She replied instantly.

"I am gonna let you in with a little secret. You can call me June, when Mr Hunt is not around!" I whispered.

"Uh. But..." She shuttered.

"I don't wanna hear buts!" I exclaimed.

"Yes, Ms.Paxton..Um.. sorry June!" She flashed a smile.

"Alright. I will leave you to your work then!" I smiled.

"Will meet you at lunch?" She asked with excitement.

"That would be great!" I smiled brightly.

She left me in my office and I was browsing the files that were on my table. I was staring at out through my window, the view was breathtaking. I could see a rush in the city, vehicles were flying around in the highway. I left out a long sigh wondering how I got here? And suddenly I heard a pop sound on my computer, I rushed to see what was it? There was an IM from someone in the office. I opened the message and that left me speechless for a moment. My eyes widened when I realized the other people in the office also call him Dragon for real?

The dragon is on the lead, stay alert everyone!

I half smiled and offed the computer. I sat on my chair, sitting up straight. I took out a file that was on my table and I was looking at Mr Hunt's schedule for the day. Suddenly the whole office grew really silent in minutes. All I could hear was the footsteps from the lobby. I tried to get a sneak peek of what was going on out there, I looked sideways and my eyes were glued on to a certain someone, alright it was him. Mr Hunt was walking in a safe distance from my office, he was wearing a black suit and he couldn't get any more gorgeous. He had the kind of face that stopped you in your tracks. I guess he must get used to that, the sudden pause in a person's natural expression when they looked his way followed by overcompensating with a nonchalant gaze and a weak smile. I guess it made the girls fall for him all the more. I was watching him awestruck.

I was shaken awake from my ridiculous train of thoughts when the phone on my table wouldn't stop ringing. I quickly answered it and it was Mia.

What's wrong with me? It doesn't matter if he looks good. He is pure evil.

June Focus!

"Hello?" I asked sweetly.

"Yes, Ms Paxton? Mr Hunts wants to see you in his office now!" She said in a rush.

"Alright!" I said after a deep sigh.

-------------------------------------

I was standing near the door for a few seconds and finally, I knocked on the door. I heard a firm voice say 'Come in! ' I slowly waltzed my way into the room. I tried to avoid his dark eyes that were watching me without shifting his gaze on me. I tried my best to smile but it was all in vain. Since he was already shooting death glares at me. I wonder what did I do now? My heart was racing dangerously.

"Mr Hunt Here is your coffee..." I started.

"Where were you?" He asked looking cold as ice.

"I was in my office!" I replied instantly.

"You were supposed to be here with my coffee before I get here! Tell me this Ms.Paxton are you always so stupid or today is some kinda special occasion?" He asked as his eyes were burning with cold fire.

I was shocked by his words although I shouldn't be I was already warned.

"I-I am sorry Sir!" I shuttered.

"I don't like apologies Ms.Paxton. Because they remind me of failures...I wasted my five minutes waiting for you!" He spoke with spite.

"This will not happen again, Sir!" I tried to keep my calm.

"It better not! Cause I can't afford to waste even a second arguing with people like you!" He said looking at me furiously.

"I understand!" I mumbled slowly.

My eyes were slightly warm since the tears were already waiting to spill any minute now. But I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of breaking me. I didn't want the girl who wept on her first day.

"I have already sent you the paperwork, you have to read each and everything and make corrections if needed and send only important stuff to my office!" He said as he was typing something on his computer.

"Alright, Sir. Anything else?" I asked swiftly.

"Yes.. make my appointments for only 30 maximum, no matter who that is!" He said firmly.

"And take notes when I say stuff!" He said looking at me

"Um.Yeah..okay!" I said as my cheeks warmed up a little bit with embarrassment.

" You may go now! "He said continuing his staring marathon with his computer.

So yeah, this was my first day. He didn't even give time for me to think about how horrible was my first day. I bet He extracted more work from me than what he was paying me for. The whole morning I was running to and fro from my office to his. I did everything he asked me to do. I was struggling at first but I successfully fixed those appointments I was asked to. I even filtered the unwanted files and sent the rest for his approval. I gotta say it was kinda challenging but I wasn't here to give up. As I was busy with all the paperwork, I lost track of time. Lunchtime was up and I wrapped up all the work. I was about to go to the canteen to get something. Since my stomach was not happy with me, I was literally starving.

As I got up from my desk, I received a text from an unknown number.

You have 15 mins to get back to work. -DH

I was fuming after seeing that text. My hands started typing a reply without even my permission cause I was that angry.

But the lunch break is for 45 mins!

I typed and pressed the send button.

That's for people who are not my secretary, Be there in 14 mins or else you are fired. -DH

And thus the texting war began.

You said 15 mins earlier!

Well.. you lost your 1 min when you were replying me! -DH

Ah..he was impossible! I was about to bust out like a volcano. I buried my face into my hands in frustration. Suddenly I sat upright with a stupid grin on my face. I unlocked my phone and saved his number as Devil.

"Now this name suits you better!" I said looking at my mobile phone.

I was startled when I heard Mia knocking on my door. I rushed to open the door. She was standing there with a sweet smile on her face.

"I thought you were coming to lunch!" She said looking at me seriously.

"Yeah. I was but.." I started.

"Okay then?" She was waiting for more information.

"Well, I will get late to work if I go now!" I said looking slightly annoyed.

"The break had just started June!" She said looking at my surprise.

"That's for you, I still have.. Umm.. 8 mins!" I said looking at my watch.

"Aww. That's too bad!" I was really looking forward to this! She said looking sad.

"It's okay. We can do this tomorrow!" I said trying to cheer her up.

"Yeah... Okay!" She agreed.

"I feel bad for my stomach. I am freaking hungry!" I complained.

"Well. You are in luck, I have an extra sandwich!" She exclaimed.

"I could hug you right now!" I squealed.

I quickly ate my sandwich with Mia. At least I made one friend today. We were talking for some time. But it was more like small talk since I was running on a clock. I did not want to get scolded again so I reached his office on time like I was instructed. I went into his office but there was no one inside. I took a closer look at the room this time. There was a huge mahogany table, it had beautiful wooden carvings on it. It looked like an antique. The room was not at all appealing in any way. The wall was painted in black, the whole room was actually like a black and white movie. There was no photographs nor any kinds of paintings in here. The table also had no reference to any human using that. I mean there was no pictures of Mr Hunt himself. But I noticed something odd in his office, there was a flash drive that was attached to a small star-shaped pendant attached to a key chain. It was odd because I had something similar to that too. I took the flash drive to get a closer look at the key chain.

"What do you think you are doing?" I heard a thundering voice from behind.

I was so petrified cause of the loud thundering voice behind me, his voice made me drop the flash drive.

"I was just.." I shuttered again.

"I do not pay you for snooping around! "He yelled.

I was furious after hearing that, I had enough of him pushing me around for a day.

"I wasn't snooping around Sir. I was just checking to make sure if you had the right flash drive for Mr Keith 's presentation!" I said looking straight into his eyes.

Yes, I read about the presentation morning in the files he gave me. I didn't know if it was a flash drive that was supposed to be used but what the hell? I just played a hunch. He was looking at me with his dangerously dark eyes but later the muscles on his forehead relaxed. He didn't exactly look calm but it was calm-ish.

"I have it, Thanks for checking!" He said sternly.

"No problem Sir!" I said and turned away.

I can't help and control that stupid grin that was creeping on my face.

"Point one June!" I mumbled to myself.

The rest of the day went quite normal. But it was mostly because I didn't go to Mr Hunt's office. I scheduled appointments for him for the rest of the day. Since I already liked organizing stuff, I arranged all the files in order. I gotta say I was getting good at this. Maybe this wasn't bad after all. It was getting late and everyone started leaving the office one by one. I knew if I wanted to leave I need to check with the devil first. I know right, so unfortunate! I don't wanna go there and ask him that. Yes, I know pride wasn't good at this point since I wanted to go home. I reluctantly got myself to go up to his office but then something happened.

My phone beeped.

Devil: You can go home. Now stop leaning on my door!

My eyes widened after reading that text.

Me: Alright.

Devil: Alright 'Sir'. Just because I am texting that doesn't mean you can be informal Ms.Paxton.

After reading that text I killed him in my mind five times.

Me: I wouldn't dare Sir!

I offed my phone. I swiftly grabbed my stuff, locked my office and rushed out of that place.
