02. Destiny's Cupid

I have been working harder than ever to get a job... The past two weeks have been the most stressful weeks of my entire life. I have gone to more than six interviews but I didn't get a call back from any of them. I was turning into a Zombie, I had no sleep in the past weeks. With the moving and searching for a new job thing, I was worn out. I was so tired of all this, at one point I lost hope. All the jobs I applied for, was either overqualified or not enough pay. I was frustrated with myself. I didn't talk to Becky about this since I didn't want to trouble her with my worries since she was already held up with the wedding stuff. It was 4 in the evening, I was still waiting for a call back for another company, that I went yesterday. Also, I had a lot of cleaning updo, since I haven't unpacked any my stuff.

Even though I was lazy to unpack all the stuff by myself, I opened up the first box reluctantly. I was the kind of person who believes music is the solution for all my problems so I grabbed my earphones and played my playlist. I first started with the box that was named as Kitchen stuff. I was really into music that I started dancing around like a crazy person. But what the hell? I was home alone anyway. I took the box inside my kitchen and started arranging the stuff. I liked to organize my stuff. So I started arranging the plates according to the categories that I made up, Guest, fancy, normal, fancy-guests. I know it sounds ridiculous but I like things when they are organized. It took about 35 minutes to empty that box, I finished my kitchen and it looked perfect.

I looked at my phone there was no messages or calls so I assumed there is no point in waiting for that call anyway. I was sitting on my couch with my face buried in my hands. Suddenly my phone started ringing, I grabbed it hoping for the best but it was only Becky.

"Hey!" I said lazily.

"Why so glum?" She asked suddenly.

Did I sound that obvious? She always finds out.

"Um..it's Nothing... Just hit a bump in the road, No big deal!" I said feeling depressed.

"What kinda bump?" She asked curiously.

"I am not getting any callbacks... And I kinda feel bad!" I replied instantly.

"Well... They are idiots for missing you, Don't worry someone will hire you!" She was trying hard to make me smile.

"I don't know!" I mumbled with doubts about that.

"Tomorrow is the last day of my work after that I will be unemployed... I mean could life get any worse?" I asked feeling depressed.

"Don't be all 'The glass is half empty!" She exclaimed.

"Well...Maybe this is happening for a reason! Maybe you are gonna get a better job and this is a sign from the universe!" She said trying to make me feel good.

"Ya well... The universe is working super slow, I don't see any job in my future...I am doomed aren't I?" I asked her.

"No, you aren't!" She was trying to make me feel better.

" Where are you now?" She asked swiftly.

"At the apartment, unpacking!" I replied after a long sigh.

"Why didn't you call me to help you with the unpacking ?!" She asked seriously.

"You would rather come here and help me unpack my stuff than select your wedding china ?" I asked curiously.

"Yes, I would. There is still a lot of days for the wedding anyway!" she replied instantly.

"I have never once an engaged person say that in my life!" I smiled.

"Well... I am not normal!" She exclaimed.

She does have a point.

"That is true!" I chuckled softly.

"Alright. You are on for dinner?" She asked suddenly.

"I don't know.. I thought of just ordering Chinese takeout!" I replied.

"Common..get out of the house! You have been locked up in there for two days, it's time to come of your cave!" She complained.

"Alright fine, I meet you for dinner at 8!" I smiled.

"Perfect then I see you soon!" She said sounding cheerful.

"You mind if I swing by your place before dinner?" She asked suddenly.

"Um..no problem! I am going for a run now, but I will be back by 6 or 7!" I replied her instantly.

"Great, you are going somewhere that is not your office! I see that as a win!" She said sarcastically.

"Yeah... I need to clear my head!" I said trying to sound convincing.

"Alright then see you at 8?!" She asked again.

"Sure!" I replied instantly and hung up the call.

I changed into my running clothes and tied my hair into a high ponytail, grabbed my I pod and started running. The park was only a few blocks away from my new apartment so I decided to go there, get some fresh air and clear my mind. I started listening to my favourite band and started running. After 10 mins of jog and I reached the park. That place looked really peaceful, the grass in there was fresh and neatly trimmed. The trees were greener and the wind made their leaves rustle against each other. I found some couples were on their picnic, some kids were playing football, Watching them kinda reminded me of my own brother. I continued running for another hour. I must agree, getting out of the apartment was really good for me. I haven't stressed anymore. I mean I was still in trouble but I didn't feel like someone was choking me to death. I walked alongside a pond, ducks were quacking and a small boy was trying to sail his toy boat. I helped the kid with his boat and I fed the ducks some bread crumbs. It felt nice meeting actual people, I mean ever since social media conquered the world, our socials skills have been poor. It felt nice to be out in the open and have a real life. My life here in New York was monotonous and mechanical. I eat, work, work and sleep. I honestly had no social life. I have been in a couple of dates but they were not like the real thing I had with Andrew.

Yes, I promised Becky I would try to move on but this is just inevitable for me. Wherever I looked, I saw him. I had a lot of sweet and bitter memories with him, they wouldn't fade away that easily. I can also put it like this, I might never fall in love again.

As those thoughts were infesting my brain, I reached the exit. I found my shoelace untied, I bent down to tie them up. And when I got up, I found a woman crossing the road. I guess she was going out of the park. She was like in her late 50s or something. She was wearing a red sweater and a fancy silk skirt. I could tell she was rich by looking at her sparkling jewellery but right now, I wasn't focusing on that since she was walking towards the other end of the road without noticing a red SUV, that was speeding towards her.

I knew my legs were tired cause of all the running, but when I saw her like that, it was like I have gotten some superpower, I was running frantically towards her. After a crazy 25 secs, I reached her and I pulled her out of the way from that car. She was startled by my behaviour, I think she might have thought I was trying to rob her or kidnap her or I have gone mental but when she saw the speeding SUV that went past us. She was looking at me with wide eyes that were filled with confusion and gratitude. But there was also something else in those eyes, it was like I had seen them before somewhere. I knew for sure I hadn't met that lady before in my life but why did she look so familiar?

I noticed she was looking paranoid, I mean anyone will be scared if they got pulled away from a speeding car. I guess that is understandable.

"Are you alright?" I asked looking at her seriously.

"Yes, You saved me!" She exclaimed and caught my hands.

As she started talking, a kind of Deja Vu hit me. she had a deep English accent that reminded me of Andrew. Well nowadays everything just reminds me of only him, maybe I was going crazy. I decided to push those confusing thoughts out my mind.

"That's okay..but are you sure you are alright? Are you hurt?" I asked her again.

"Yeah...Yeah, I am fine! I guess I wasn't watching the road carefully!" She said looking disturbed.

"But still...Did you see that car number? We could file a complaint on whoever was driving that!" I replied instantly.

"No dear... It's okay! I was on my way to Rosemary cafe... They make the best.." She started.

"Cinnamon rolls!" I completed her sentence.

I remember they used to be Andrew's favourite.

"Yes, Indeed!" She chuckled.

"Do you like them too?" I asked looking amused.

"No..it's for my son! He works here in New York, I was actually going to surprise him." She said with a sweet smile.

"That's great... Well, you should carry on! It was really nice meeting you.." I stopped awkwardly since I didn't know her name.

"Heather. That's my name!" She said with a charming smile.

"It's nice to meet you, Heather! I am June... June Paxton!" I replied instantly.

"Well..it's great meeting you June!" She smiled again.

"Um...I should go! You take care !" I said looking at her.

"Actually can you help me with something?" She asked.

"Uh..sure!" I nodded without hesitation.

"Well..as you can see I am not a New Yorker, so I am having difficulty finding that cafe... Can you take me there?" She asked as her ocean blue eyes sparkled.

She was so sweet and she looked very familiar, although I didn't know why?

"Well... I am not a New Yorker either but I can help you since you are asking the direction for my favourite cafe in New York!" I exclaimed with joy.

"That would be convenient since I can make you stay for a coffee! I want to treat you with something, after all, you saved my life!" She smiled brightly.

"No, that's really not necessary! " I replied swiftly.

"But I insist! " She exclaimed.

She reminded me of my mom in a lot of ways, so I was bound to give in.

Rosemary's was in away by a 20 minutes drive but I didn't mind because I still had a lot of time for dinner with Becky. We took a cab, and I was showing around New York to her as if I was a tour guide. Surprisingly we both were having a blast. I was obviously having fun since I was cooped up in my apartment for a long time.

Heather was really an outgoing person. After talking to her, I learnt that she was from London (that explains the charming accent), Her only son was a workaholic so she comes to visit him once in a year here. I didn't have a very long conversation with her but in that little time I spent with her..she kept on talking about her son, it was obvious that she was so close to her son. I took her to the cafe, she ordered coffee for us.

"So June... You told me you are a Journalist!" She said suddenly.

"Yes, I was...I just lost my job!" I said trying to look normal as possible.

"Oh.. I am so sorry!" She said as she noticed the frown on my face.

"Um..No, it's okay don't be! I said looking at her.

The company where I worked, they got shut down... It's not like we can do anything about it!" I explained to her.

"That's awful... Don't worry honey! You will get a better job than that!" She said smiling.

"You sound just like my friend Becky... So positive!" I said trying to sound normal.

I was feeling really down since tomorrow was the last day at work.

"Are you okay Sweetheart? I am sorry, I shouldn't have brought it up! " She said looking slightly worried.

"No... It's okay! It's just the past two weeks have been very difficult for me... When you told me that I would get a better job, it kinda reminded me of my mom and I miss her...she is back home and It's been long since I visited her!" I said as the moisture in the corner of my eyes was threatening to spill.

"I understand... But I am sure, she will be proud of you for working this hard!" She said and gave a gentle squeeze as held my hands.

I nodded with a smile.

As she was about to have a sip of her coffee, her phone started ringing. She took out her phone and looked at the screen and smiled.

"Um. I am afraid I to have to get this!" She said and pressed the answers button.

I just smiled and continued drinking my coffee.

"Well, Hello sweetheart!" She greeted the person on the other end of the phone.

"Yes, I know my flight landed early... I should have told you but I wanted to surprise so.." She paused suddenly maybe she was interrupted.

"Sweetheart, I am your mother! It's not the other way around!" She chuckled.

I guess her son was really protective of her. Then suddenly the scene of that speeding car came before my eyes, I was really nervous thinking about it.

"I am in a small cafe with a friend!" She said and smiled at me.

"Yes, I have a friend! " She said firmly.

"No, you don't have to pick me up, I will be home in a few minutes... You don't have to worry! She exclaimed.

"Wait... You said you have a job opening at your company right?" She asked suddenly eyeing me.

I was taken by surprise there.

"I think I have the right person for that job!" She said looking at me.

I mouthed ' what are you doing? '

"Okay... I will let my friend know! " She exclaimed with excitement in her eyes.

What the hell was going on?

"Alright. Yes, it will be fine... Bye!" She said and hung up her phone.

After she hung up her call, She looked at me with a huge grin.

"What's going on?" I asked her eyeing her carefully.

"Did I mention my son is also a kind of a Journalist?" She asked with a huge grin on her face.

"Um..no!" I replied slowly.

"Well he is.. And there is a job opening in his company! " She said looking excited.

"What's the company's name?" I asked looking equally excited.

"It's called the Rick & Hunt publishing!" She exclaimed.

Oh, carp! Not that one... That was the one Lisa warned me about. And just like that, all my excitement faded away and my smile turned into a frown.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?" She asked noticing the change in my reaction.

I was about to open my mouth about that evil boss of a dragon but I didn't since, her son was also working there.

"Um..it's nothing important! It's a really big company, I don't know if they would hire me!" I said slowly.

"Oh that's nonsense..you will do fine there!" She said as she flashed one of her smiles.

"I don't know Heather!" I said looking doubtful.

"Tell me this, Is the job important to you?" She asked looking serious.

"Yes... It is!" I replied instantly.

"Then promise me you would take the interview!" She exclaimed again.

"But... I.." I started.

"You saved my life, This is the least I could do!" She said with a soft smile.

"You don't have to repay me or anything.. !" I said looking at her.

"Oh.. Shush already! You are taking the interview tomorrow morning and that's final! " She said firmly.

"But I am really nervous!" I mumbled.

Maybe I said that out loud.

"Don't worry... I will ask my son to take good care of you!" She said with amusement.

"So in what department does he works?" I asked her.

She was startled by my question... I wonder why?

"Uh... He is with the editorial section. I guess I am not really sure of what he does though! " She shuttered.

"That's what my mom tells if anyone asks her, what I did for a living? I guess all moms are the same! " I chuckled.

"You could say that!" She left out a small smile.

I looked at my watch and it was 7.20 pm already.

"Anyway... Thanks for everything, I think I should go now!" I said with a huge smile on my face.

"Alright... Good luck with the interview!" She pulled me into a hug.

It's funny how my day had turned out to be, a few hours before I thought I had no future in New York but now I had a job interview at Rick & Hunt publishing. And most of all I met this amazing person. She was like an angel sent to me from heaven by God.

"Take care, Heather!" I said as I hugged her.

"You too sweetheart, And let me know how your interview turns out !" She said with a smile.
