Chapter 4

Hailey-

Everything was happening so fast, Travis had yelled at me to get in the car quickly and I did, as soon as I got in the car it started at full speed and I didn't even have time to buckle up, I had to do it when the car was already running. I had no idea what was happening and because it was happening, those cars were following us and were about to approach, we could not see the road very well because of the darkness of the night and the dust that the car raised when going at high speed, my heart was beating a thousand and I was not the only nervous at this time, Travis seemed scared. We were just two teenagers in a car, in the middle of the night, running away from two other cars with strangers in them, the truth was I had no idea who was there and even less had I planned to spend the night running away with Travis for something I don't know either. Travis turned at the first corner that appeared, he kept looking in the rearview mirror and cursing, I felt bad, because if I had obeyed him this wouldn't be happening and we would be wherever we were supposed to be. My breathing was agitated and I was afraid of having a fit right now, I feel completely useless because I don't know what to do to help him, I had already got him into trouble and if I try to do something I feel like I'm going to ruin him. I thought that by going off the road we had lost those cars, but I was wrong. The cars were still behind us and it seemed almost impossible to get them out of sight, but Travis was driving as if his life depended on it, and now that I think about it, our lives do depend on it. Those cars were getting closer and closer and he seemed to be getting tense.

“I'm sorry,” I said, if we were going to die I wanted to apologize to him.

“Just...” he sighed, “keep silent.

I didn't say anything else, but the fact that those cars were getting closer made me very nervous and terrified at the same time. Travis' car stopped suddenly, we were both confused, he cursed and tried to start the car, but this one seemed to be dead, I assumed it was the gasoline. He ran his hands through his hair, he was very frustrated and the other cars were too close. He turned his eyes to me and took my hands, then looked me in the eye.

“I want you to know that the Travis you are going to see outside is not the real Travis, he is just a defect of which I am not very proud,” he spoke about him in the third person, which confused me too much, “don't get out of the car unless I ask you to and try not to look at what is happening out there,” he whispered and I heard how those cars that were following us stopped behind Travis' car, they were already here.

“What are you going to do out there?

“Will you do what I asked you to do?” he Ignored what I said earlier. I looked at his eyes, I felt that he was sad and angry at the same time, but that look he was giving me reflected confidence, so I nodded and this time I was sure that he wasn't going to try anything stupid.

He got out of the car and I quickly looked at the scene from the window, I could see four men dressed in black and armed next to the cars that were chasing us, what struck me was that they were all bald, none of them had hair and they were wearing black glasses so I couldn't see what they looked like exactly. Travis was ten feet away from the men and didn't have any weapons with him to defend himself, which worried me.

“We'll just take her and go," said one of the bald men. Were they talking about me? I'm not so sure.

“I won't give her up," said Travis, "so tell Susan if she wants something, to be willing to fight on her own and not send her goons to do her dirty work.

“The boss doesn't have time for easy jobs,” the bald man spoke again. Who the hell is Susan?

"Easy job?" Travis laughed, "I can smell your fear a mile away."

One of the men whispered something to the previous speaker and he looked at Travis.

“Give us the girl and we'll consider leaving you alive.

“If you want it then you'll have to take it away from me," said Travis, and he placed his hands a little distance away from the sides of his body, as if he was acquiring super powers or something.

The men seemed to be alarmed, fired their guns in unison, and a hail of bullets washed down on Travis, I drowned out a scream. I thought those bullets were going to hit his body and leave him lifeless, but I was wrong, the bullets stopped inches away from him and were floating, as if a magnetic force had prevented them from touching Travis. I was too surprised, it seemed like a failure of reality, these things I had seen in movies and I was logically sure that what was happening could not be true. Travis made a movement with his right hand, as if he had pushed the bullets towards those men and that happened, those men covered themselves so that the bullets wouldn't hit them, but one of them was hit in the leg and another in the shoulder. The next thing that happened was that they started shooting at Travis, but their guns flew off to the side and it looked like they were driven by him. I was amazed. Does Travis have super powers? How did he get those things to fly? My mind was unable to accept the things that just happened, this can't be real, but it was happening. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Travis make a move, but he was stopped by a bald man who got out of the car, he had been shot with something and Travis fell instantly, he seemed to be paralyzed and that alarmed me. I didn't think twice, I got out of the car with my heart in my throat, ran to him and knelt down next to him.

“Travis," I shook him and he didn't respond, his eyes were open, but he was completely immobile. "Travis, please," I said, "react, don't leave me, I need you.

I got up quickly when I felt one of the men approaching me, I got defensive and the man gave me a signal to calm down.

“We won't hurt you, you just have to come with us," he said.

“You killed him,” I spit out with hate, “you killed Travis”

“He'll be fine,” I felt the same energy I felt today when that man wanted to hurt me, “you must come with us, for your safety.

What's everyone got to do with my safety today? And wanting to take me everywhere? Couldn't they just leave me alone?

“I'm not going anywhere with you.

The man came closer and alarmed me, the energy I felt was stronger and stronger. He came closer again, but this time he tried to touch my arm and I knew that was a bad idea.

“Don't touch me!” I screamed and what happened next to that was not normal at all.

I exploded, not literally, but I felt all my energy and rays of light come out of me towards those men, I saw how they twisted and turned into ashes. All those men, who had harmed Travis and threatened my life, had turned to ashes and from what I saw I had done it, the energy I had felt in my body twice this day, was literally energy and seemed to be electrical energy, I had pulverized those men and I was not aware that I could do that until today. I was in shock, I had just killed each of those men and I was afraid of what would happen next. I don't remember anything else, because I fell to the ground faint from draining all the energy I had inside.

(…)

I opened my eyes in shock, my body was burning and my eyes were heavy. I remembered everything that had happened and thought, maybe it was just a bad dream and now it was time to live reality, but when I saw that I was in a room that was unknown to me, I knew that this was reality. The room I was in was completely gray, it wasn't very big, enough space for a double bed, two bedside tables, a closet and a chair, only that was in the room, and the only light that was there came from a small window that I wouldn't even reach if I got on the chair. I was alone, the atmosphere was very unfamiliar, but I didn't feel any negative energies, although I couldn't stop being on the alert in case something happened and someone tried to hurt me. The door, which I hadn't noticed before, opened and I was too scared. A brunette woman, no older than forty, came into the room with a cup of tea in her hands and a quiet smile on her face.

“Easy, I'm not a bad guy," she said and walked over.

“How can you assure me of that?

"We both know that you can tell whether I am or not," she answered, "I know that you are very disoriented, you have a very disordered mind because of all that you experienced in one day." “Where's Travis?

“He's fine, he's resting,” she sat up on the bed and handed me the cup he came in with, “drink it, it's green tea, your favorite.

I looked at her in surprise. How could she know that about me?

“Because I can read you, I can hear your thoughts” she replied and again I was surprised.

“I don't want you in my head” I said and she laughed.

“I know, dear," she smiled, "but I have to do it, it's my job.

“What happened there? How I did...” I interrupted myself thinking about what I was going to say.

“How did you hurt them?" I nodded, "I'm not the right person to talk to you about that, but I'm here to prepare you to understand.

She got up and went to the closet that was there, took a set of clothing from there and handed it to me.

“Put that on, someone wants to meet you, I'll wait for you outside the room," she stroked my cheek and left.

I looked at the clothes he gave me, which consisted of a black pants and a white T-shirt, something very basic. I accepted what was happening, or at least I'm trying to, I can't hide the fear and the desire to cry that I had, I don't know what's going on, but I know that my mother is involved in this and that gives me the idea that there is something about me that everyone has been hiding from me all these years, something that even Travis knows and I don't, something that makes us the same. I sighed, I was so tired, I just wanted to go home and forget everything that had just happened but that seemed a little difficult, I can't understand what those bald men wanted from me and because I had reacted that way, it was something I couldn't control. I decided to think about those things later and I put on those clothes that the lady gave me, because my dress was horrible and I feel bad for having ruined the dress that Maddy gave me. When I finished dressing, I took a deep breath and left the room. There was the lady, who had not yet given me her name, I looked around and noticed that it was a white corridor, the floor looked like marble and there were other doors, so the place I was in was big. The lady smiled at me and motioned for me to take her arm to guide me, but I was still disoriented and couldn't stop looking around, everything seemed strange to me and the fact that I had someone next to me who could read absolutely everything I was thinking made me nervous. She smiled at me, trying to calm me down and started walking, so I walked along with her. There wasn't a single person in the hallway of this place besides us, just rooms and a big staircase, so I could see we were on the top floor of a house, a very big house as far as I could see. We went down the stairs and I saw what I knew was the hall, in front of us there was a double door and on the sides there were two arches on the walls that led to other rooms, behind the stairs there was a corridor, it seemed that this house was huge. The lady guided me to the room that was to our left, it looked like a dining room that was only used when they had visitors or when they had important dinners, because there was a big table with 8 chairs or more and I don't think that anybody ate there daily because everything seemed to be very elegant, very maintained, also because of the paintings and sculptures that were around, the upholstery also called my attention, I had never seen such a detailed upholstery and it must be very expensive.

“Do you like the upholstery?” A female voice, which was not that of the previous lady, caught my attention and I turned around, I hadn't noticed that at the end of the table sat a lady with completely white hair and short hair under her ears, besides she was wearing a hair bangs, “it must be over a hundred years old by now.

“Who are you?

"Have a seat, Hailey," she pointed to a chair near her, "I asked the chef of the house to prepare your favorite meal."

“Do you read minds too?” I sat where she told me to.

“I see that you ask a lot of questions," she said, I having her close by I could see that her eyebrows and eyelashes were also white, and that her eyes were very blue and her skin very pale, she looked very young, “no, I don't read minds, but Zenda told me your tastes and preferences, so don't worry,” I assumed that Zenda was the lady who read my mind.

A man entered the room with a tray in his hands and left it in front of me, it contained a plate with spaghetti and meatballs, a glass of juice, a basket of bread and the cutlery. Spaghetti is definitely my favorite food, since my grandmother used to cook this for me when I was a child and I don't think this spaghetti will even match it.

“Won't you tell me who you are and why you have me here?" I asked, looking at the white-haired lady.

“My name is Neferet Ryan," she answered and I looked at her in confusion, "but you can call me Aunt Neferet.
