Chapter Five

Lance puts his phone in his pocket and walks to Cali. She seems to see evidence based on her reaction. When he reaches her, he is surprised to see a shoe. One red rubber shoe. He gets a plastic glove from his pocket, places it in his hand, and gets the evidence.

“A red shoe?

She looks at it closely while Lance analyzes it as well.

“I know that kind of shoe. It’s recently promoted by Ekie.

He looks at her. Ekie is the leading shoe brand in town. He looks at the shoe closely and it does look like brand new.

“What else do you know about it?

“It doesn’t have a size. The shoe expands based on the one wearing it.

He sighs. “Then, that could mean that we’ll have a hard time finding its owner.

---

In the end, Lance and Cali go to the precinct to ask more about the unknown caller the IT team found.

Cali once entered the precinct before for a beat. The policemen are very cooperative but somehow she feels uncomfortable inside. She doesn’t think much about it. But now that she is back there, she feels nervous.

The precinct of San Antonio doesn’t have much policemen. But each one works diligently like those from other towns. Once they see Lance arrive, they greet him as if he’s a boss. But Cali thinks that they treat each other with respect and they might be super excited for Lance.

A younger-looking man approaches them with a paper on his hand.

“Lance, here is everything we found on her accounts. Bob said the unknown number cannot be traced.

Lance sighs and turns to Cali.

“Joe, this is Cali. She’s a reporter from San Antonio Daily. Cali, this is Joe, he’s a part of the IT Team with Bob.

Cali and Joe shake hands.

“Nice to meet you” Cali says while Joe nods.

“Cali is working with us. Actually, we found something on the crime scene but I’ll investigate it further and check if there are prints there to give us a lead.

Joe proudly smiles, something Cali notices. Maybe if you’ve been with Lance for so long, it’s nice to see him so passionate now. Joe then hands Cali the papers.

“Then, I’ll do our best to find the caller. If you guys find anything on those papers, let us know.

---

Lance takes Cali to a room by the end of the hall. When he opens the light, the room contains a huge board with papers and even a photo of Jane. As a fan of crime series, Cali expected Lance to have this kind of room.

The room where all the pieces of evidence are and all theories are made. Cali smiles widely and then she turns to Lance who places the evidence on a small table. He wears his gloves then removes the shoe from the plastic.

Cali moves closer to him to watch as he puts powder on a brush to reveal if there are fingerprints on the shoe. His eyes widen.

“Impossible”

She looks at him with curiosity. He continues to brush the shoe again, but his reaction is still the same as before.

“What’s happening?

He turns to her. “There are no prints. I feel that we are dealing with someone knowledgeable here.

“What do you mean?

He takes a deep breath. “I’m saying that this might be an experienced killer or he intentionally left the shoe for us to find.

Her eyes widen in surprise. “Like a clue?

He nods. “That might be the reason why he chose a shoe that doesn’t have a size. But, what could a red shoe mean?

---

After having theorizing for hours, Cali decides to go back to the office to write her report. After all, she needs to let the people know what they found. But a part of her doesn’t want to tell anyone about the red shoe. It could give the killer an idea that they are now inside his game.

She is about to walk when someone holds her shoulder. She immediately turns to see a tall guy in the same age as her.

“Miss Cali?

“Y..yes?

He smiles. “I’m Bob. I’m working with Lance. He mentioned that you’re working with us.

Her nervousness goes away. She takes a deep breath and smiles.

“Hi. Sorry I was surprised.

He chuckles. “It’s understandable. I ran the number a few times but I still can’t get to see where it is from or who it is. Which is weird since everyone in San Antonio has their number in our server.

“Jane’s mom she has online friends. Do you think this could be one?

He frowns as bit as he thinks. “Possible. But if that’s the case then it will be difficult to find who it is.

“We found a piece of evidence on the crime scene and we believe that it is a message from the killer.

Bob seems to calm and waits for her to respond. But Cali finds this as a weird expression. Is telling him the right decision? Or will it make things worse?

“Um, what is it?

She snaps back in reality. She has this weird vibe about Bob and she can’t point out why. She finally decides not to write about the shoe and tell it to Bob instead. If he acts weird or what, then he might know the killer.

“It’s a red shoe. Do you know what it means?

He pauses for a bit. “Well, aren’t red shoes a sign of unruly women?

She stops. She can feel her heart beating fast. Bob notices her uneasiness and tries to hold her but she moves away.

“uh.. I…”

“Is everything okay?

“I.. I need to go”

She doesn’t wait for his response and runs away. She needs to tell this to Lance but first, she needs to write her story.

---

As Cali and Lance expected, the reaction of the citizens of San Antonio will worsen by the fact that the killer isn’t found and that even the number doesn’t help with the investigation. With this, the local police decided to release a statement with the press.

But while Lance is doing his speech, his phone notifies and his eyes widen by the message.

“Another body is found.
