Chapter Four

Lance isn’t expecting a personal call today even if a lot of people are pestering the police station for updates on Jane’s case. He can't blame them since as a detective, he haven't solved the case yet. It's terrifying to know that there is a killer out there who just randomly decided to target Jane or it could be someone she knew who hated her. Whichever it is, a killer is living his routine as normal and who knows what he might do next.

But when his phone rings and it’s from Cali, he knows that something big is about to happen.

“Hello?

“I’m not sure if you know about this, but I talked to her mom and she said that Jane has online friends”

Lance pauses. He wasn’t aware of that. Reporters do have their way of knowing the truth.

“Let’s meet. I’ll pick you up”

Most people would feel intimidated when someone gets a new information but not Lance. Ever since he is a child, he appreciates all the help he can get. This made other detectives from different towns think that he lacks self-confidence but Lance doesn’t think that way. He knows he isn’t perfect and sometimes there are information that he might miss.

This is the main reason he offers Cali to work with him. He knows that she can be a great help and he isn’t wrong.

---

“It now makes sense”

Lance says as he drives. Cali turns to him with his sudden comment.

“What do you mean?

“Ever wondered why San Antonio rarely have cases like this? It’s because the people residing here are not murderers. If Jane was attacked, it could be someone from another town.

“That’s a weird way to put it, but if you consider the stats of town, it makes sense.

Jane could be one unfortunate soul who was targeted by a monster. Her kindness and pureness was taken advantage of by the killer.

“We have Jane’s phone and laptop. I already asked our IT team to hack her accounts and check if she met with someone that day.

“But… that still doesn’t make sense. She told her family and friend that she will go home. So she isn’t meeting someone.

Lance sighs. “We’ll have to see after we check her accounts.

Cali turns to him. “What do you think?

“To be honest, I’m not that sure yet. I can’t say something baseless and as long as we don’t have a lead, it’s difficult to come into conclusion.

She nods and looks by the window.

“I’m planning to go to the scene of the crime. Wanna come with me?

He asks as she suddenly turns to another direction. She smiles and nods.

---

In Cali’s head, the crime scenes are full of tapes and policemen all over. But when she and Lance arrive there, she sees one long tape around the area with no one surrounding it.

“Where is everybody?

She suddenly asks, making Lance turn to her.

“Well, after the news broke, things have been crazy in the station so the chief asked everyone to go back.

Cali nods in understanding and they walk to where Jane’s body was found. There is a huge X mark on the floor. She tries to imagine what Jane looks like that day. Is she just walking alone, feeling excited to see her family then all of a sudden, a man attacks her? Or is she walking with a man she meets online and finally decides that he should meet her family then all of a sudden he attacks her? Or maybe it's all an accident? A traveler just wants to find someone to mess with and finds Jane alone and helpless?

“We tried looking for the murder weapon, but we couldn’t find one. Based on the autopsy, aside from her broken neck and wrist, she has these small holes in her body so we’re assuming that the weapon has a small pointy object like a screwdriver.

When Lance finds the autopsy, he couldn't believe his eyes. He expects it to be a gun or a knife, but a possibility of a screwdriver? What could that mean? Is the murder prepared to kill Jane that night or it could all be a coincidence? What's weird is that her slippers are missing. Why would a killer keep his victim's things?

A lot of things are running in his head. It's actually keeping him awake for hours. Instead of feeling tired, he feels more energetic. He wants to find the killer. He wants to know why he did it in San Antonio and why Jane.

“That’s brutal”

Cali comments as she looks around. Her comment cuts off his thoughts. He checks his phone to see if the IT team has an update. Meanwhile, Cali pauses when she sees something by a huge tree near the X mark. She isn't sure what it is so she tries to look at it from afar but she can't see it clearly. She then continues to walk to the direction of the object and suddenly stops.

She can feel her body tremble in fear. Lance didn't mention anything like this to her so it could be from the murderer. She can feel her throat become try and her knees weaken. She turns to Lance who is busy with his phone. He seems to be talking to someone.

"So, were you able to hack into her accounts?"

"Yes. But there isn't really anything suspicious. She did tell her family that she will be coming home that night early but that's it. No mention of meeting someone else or anything related."

"How about her recent calls?"

"There is one unknown number that called her and I'm asking Bob to check it. This might take a while since you know how our technology here is."

Lance chuckles. "Yeah I do. Thanks."

When the call ends, he turns to Cali who is standing stiff and looking at him.

"Cali?"

“Lance, I think I found something.
