Chapter Three

Cali checks her notes as Lance takes her home. He notices her busy reading. Cali has this expression she makes when she isn't happy with something and even if they just met today, Lance can read her reaction easily. He thinks it's his skill as a detective.

“Do you have everything you need for your news?

She nods but there is still a frown on her face that Lance cannot ignore. He knows he has this habit of constantly analyzing people even if he shouldn't, but he believes that her concern is regarding the case and the case is his priority.

“Is there a problem?” he asks again.

She takes a deep breath. “It’s just… weird. I mean, she seems to be a nice person. Who would do this to her?

“Not all murders have a reason. There are killers who kill people just because they feel like it. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they have a grudge against that person.

She looks at him. “Do you think that’s what’s happening right now?

“We can’t say that for sure. But we need to be open to the possibilities. If I’m right, then we could be in big trouble.

He knows he shouldn't say that but he needs to be honest, at least to Cali. If they're going to work together, he needs to tell her everything even his opinion on the case.

He waits for her reaction but she keeps the frown on her face. He assumes that he expects the worse already and that makes easier for him to handle things.

When the newspaper arrive the following morning, the citizens of San Antonio do not know what to react about the news. It’s not every day that the San Antonio Daily will report an unsolved murder and even if Cali tried not to speculate panic, it did. The town leaders did expect this but there is nothing they can do. In a small town, news spreads fast. If the newspaper won't report the issue, it will seem that the town is hiding something and that is not the best way to to handle problems. By the end of the report, Cali did mention that Lance Lopez, the only detective in town, will solve the issue immediately.

Cali thinks he can do it. But she is not sure if the killer will make another move considering that everyone's eyes are on him.

“You did a great job with that news, Cali. But since it’s not yet solved, I want you to focus on it.

The editor says during their meeting that morning. The other writers turn to Cali and applauds. She smiles proudly because this is the first time they recognize her work. The editor then proceeds to the other stories for that day.

Cali can’t help but think about what Lance said the other day. But according to the crime series she watched, a person can be considered as a serial killer if he or she has killed more than three people. They shouldn’t wait for 2 more deaths before they act, right?

As a follow-up story, she goes to Jane’s house. She wants to get her family’s side although she doubts that they’ll tell her anything. She completely understands, after all, it’s their privacy. She just needs to think of a back-up plan if this fails.

Jane lives in the quiet part of the town. It’s farther from the business center. It’s an hour trip but Cali doesn’t mind since she isn’t in a rush. When she arrives, she easily sees Jane’s house as it has candles by the porch.

She stops her car, looks at the candles and even photos of Jane. She takes a photo and proceeds to the door. The atmosphere just outside the house is different when you're actually by the door. Since Cali never experienced attending funerals or losing someone she loves, she doesn't know the feeling in front of her right now. The feeling of grief and pain seems familiar but when she looks back at it now, she can't feel anything in her heart.

“Oh, you’re the reporter who made the article about Jane.” A woman in her early 50s says as she opens the door for Cali.

“Yes. I was wondering if I can interview her family. Also, this can help detective Lance in finding Jane’s killer.

“The detective just left and said the same thing.

“Oh. I see”

The woman lightly smiles. “Jane is a kind woman. No one would intentionally hurt her. I know that it might be impossible for that to happen, but it’s true. I am her mother. I know everything about her."

Cali nods. “We know that. But we can’t expect people to just accept her kindness. I’m not saying that the people of San Antonio are mean, but there are a lot of possibilities in her case.

The old woman looks down. “I’ve been thinking that too. It could be someone who was jealous or someone she met online…”

Cali pauses. “She meets people online?

“Yes. Cali isn’t really good at making friends in person so she goes online and makes friends with strangers. We didn’t think it’s wrong since she tells us about it and she never met anyone.

"What made you think that Jane will mention it?"

The woman seems surprised by the sudden question.

"I didn't mean to---"

The woman lightly smiles. "I see. It's good for a reporter to be open minded. But you see, Jane is an open book. She talks about everything and she isn't afraid of telling what's on her mind. Sure, there might be small things that should be left unsaid, but Jane enjoys the company of her new -found friends and it would be impossible for her not talk about it."

Cali looks around the house. It feels warm and full of love. Jane seems like she's living the perfect life: happy family, stable work, and great friends. It's really a shame that her life ended early and in that way.
