Chapter Four

Dad insists that he will be the one who will drive. Cyrus, even he feels uneasy and worried, just let dad what he wants. Mom supports dad and threatens him that if becomes tired, Cyrus will not replace him. I smile, I miss this.

I miss spending time with my family. Even if I understand why my parents should travel a lot, I also wish that they will be at home all the time. The house still feels empty even if there are three of us. But now, I know that everything will be better since our parents are with us.

“I’m sorry about Kaleb” Cloud mumbles.

I move closer to him and place my head on his shoulder. He is busy playing a video game using his Nintendo Switch. I don’t want to reply because I can’t explain my feelings. I have this whole idea of what a relationship is but somehow, my experience with Kaleb is not giving me the emotions I thought I should have.

When I wake up, we’re already at our new home. I scratch my eyes as my vision is still blurry.

“Wow” Cloud comments as he looks at our new house.

Indeed, it is bigger as compared with our old house. I sigh, I miss our old house. Dad taps me after seeing me look at the house.

“Can you help me with the boxes?

I nod and walk back to the car. There are small boxes that contain some of our belongings. I am about to get the box when I notice a guy jogging nearby. He looks the same age as Cyrus but why is he jogging at night?

As if he can hear my thoughts, the guy turns to my direction. I immediately look away. Great. What a first impression. I get the box and is about to go inside when I hear someone.

“Hey”

I pause. I can feel my heart pound louder every second. I can’t believe this is really happening to me. Why do I have to look at him anyway? I take a deep breath, I can still save this.

I turn and smile, “Hi?

My mom used to tell me that when she first saw that, her breathing stopped. That’s when she knew he was special. Imagine having someone stop you from breathing!

And here I am, catching my breath after seeing this gorgeous stranger. He smiles at me, it’s like I’m looking at a model or celebrity. His hair is brown and his bangs are all over his face since he’s sweating. His eyes immediately disappear when he smiles and he just has this aura of an ideal man.

He moves closer to me, making me still. “Hi! I’m Simon. I live nearby. I heard there are new neighbors coming today.

I smile as I cannot process the words I am about to say. It’s like he’s illuminating a light and I can’t even explain what’s happening to me right now. I nod while he smiles again.

“And your name?

I snap back to reality. I chuckle awkwardly.

“Ciel”

“What a nice name. Guess I’ll see you around. Don’t want to bother you if you’re busy.

Before I can reply, he jogs away. I watch as he disappear into the other houses. Who knew this subdivision has an angel?

Mom is in charge of dinner. I miss her cooking and I am extra happy that we’re having baked spaghetti tonight. Cloud and I start digging the moment the food is on the table. Mom just chuckles while Dad prepares her share.

Mom and dad are always like that. Their affection towards each other are easily seen and people might think that they just got married.

“So, tomorrow is your first day in your new school. Even if classes already started here, the principal told us that you can easily catch up. She even gave us some notes from some of your subjects.” Mom says before she takes a bite.

Cloud nods, I know he won’t be worried about it. He’s a genius. Even if he doesn’t come to class for a month, he can still get a perfect score in his test. I envy him a lot. Even if I’m good at counseling, I have to spend endless nights studying for finals.

It’s been a while since I last experienced a first day. The last time was when I started studying. I was four years old then and I can remember being scared when I entered the room. The children have their own world and I played alone for a long time.

Right now, as I look at my new school, I can feel my nervousness all over my body. For sure everyone already has their own friends. I need to build friendships again and start trusting people. I turn to see my dad waving at me from the car.

“Go on, sweetie.

I sigh, Cloud is already far from me. He’s excited to meet new friends. I guess that’s what young people feel nowadays. I hold my backpack tight and start walking. The difference between this school and my previous one is that we are required to wear uniforms.

I guess this is better than worrying what to wear every single day.

The people here look like they know everyone. My dad said earlier that this town is small so it’s no surprise that everyone knows each other. Some students look at me with curiosity, while some look like they’re judging me.

I look down and continue walking. I have to endure this. Once I get a friend, everything will be fine. I hope.

The school is large. There are a lot of students in the hallways. My goal is just to get to class and find my seat. The best impression that I can give today is to be punctual in my class. Good thing, the school has a map. I can easily check where my room is located without needing to ask anybody.

I am on my way to my room when someone grabs my backpack from behind. I immediately turn. A guy with black shiny hair smiles at me.

“You’re the new girl, right?

I raise my eyebrow, he looks nice, typical smart guy nice.

“Oh! Sorry. I’m Matthew. I’m tasked to tour the new students.

I nod and smile. “Hi! I’m Ciel.

I offer my hand and he takes it. He smells nice and his hand sure is soft.

“I met your brother and he insisted that he will figure out things for himself—“ he starts as he places his hand on his nape.

I chuckle, typical Cloud.

“Ah, sorry about that. You can just tour me if you like? Although my class is about to start soon…”

I turn to check my schedule. Matthew nods.

“Right! We are actually in the same class. Let’s go?

The thing is, Matthew looks like he’s really a nice guy. But a part of me believes that he’s hiding something. Or I could be judgemental like those girls. Whatever it is, I’m glad someone’s here to help me out.
