Ash Yang

After playing his favorite online game for hours, Ash Yang decided to walk his faithful dog, Shiro, in the neighborhood. Shiro turned seven last month which means he's a 47-year-old gentleman in human years. You still cannot remove his childhood behavior from the dog, though. He loves to play fetch and to greet strangers while he's walking with his young master ever since he was a pup. He was given to him by his father when Ash turned 11. Since Ash was the only son, he thought that having a dog companion would ease his boredom and sadness since he's left alone most of the time at home. Just him and the household employees. But now, it's only Ash and Shiro. The teenage boy is satisfied with the setup. Now that Ash turned 18, he decided to have a place on his own. Being the heir of the Yang Group of Companies, he was able to get the best spot for his condominium that's conveniently near his new school.

Ash called Shiro that's busy playing with his favorite red ball in the living room, Shiro barked and wagged his tail. He decided to bring his toy with him so they could play fetch. Ash smiled at the jolly dog and he opened the door for his pet. When they got out of the building, Ash looked up at the sky and saw that the spring sun was so energizing. "What nice weather," he thought to himself and whistled at Shiro since he got busy accepting head scratches from the security guard. Ash never used a leash on Shiro or placed him in a cage. He just trained Shiro since he got hold of him and well, if you do not add the dog's short attention span, you can say that he's a well-trained dog. Being a Shiba Inu, he really has a friendly trait among strangers that you cannot take away from the breed.

Their stroll was going well since Shiro was walking by his master's side with the ball on his mouth. They were already a few blocks away from their home when Ash heard his phone ringing. It was his dad. He answered the call while he went to the edge of the sidewalk. He remembered Shiro so he quickly muted his phone and said, "Sit. Stay," to Shiro. Shiro heard the boy. He stopped walking and decided to sit. He was starting to make sad noises guessing he wanted to play with his master already.

"How's your new place?" the voice on the other line asked.

"Pretty good. Thanks, dad," Ash replied.

"I see. Take care. I just got home," his dad informed.

"Okay." Then there's silence. Mr. Yang still tried to keep the conversation alive.

"What did you choose as your major by the way?" Ash was about to answer when he sees Shiro walking. Apparently, he released his ball and it rolled over to the sidewalk. He was following Shiro with his eyes before he started talking.

"Engineering," he sighed, "I guess it's the only choice I got."

"I think that's a good major."

"I see." Another silence.

Conversations between a father and son can be this awkward. Ash does not know how to keep up with conversations. So is his father. It's really difficult not having a mother around. His father wanted to encourage his son and he's trying to think what his wife would say in this kind of situation when Ash shouted,

"Shiro! Don't!"

Mr. Yang got curious, "Hello, son? Ash?" He listened for a reply but there was none. He just heard a car screeching from a distance then the call ended. He dialed his son's number again but there's no answer.

Ash froze for a moment until he came to his senses. He saw Shiro barking at the girl that's lying on the sidewalk. He ran and Shiro was making sad noises again as he tried to nudge the seemingly dead girl. People started to gather and someone already called an ambulance. Traffic enforcers arrived quickly to assess the incident and managed to fix the traffic by signaling the other cars to just move past the part where they placed traffic cones.

The sun was about to set and the girl was already rushed to the hospital. The driver was not really hurt so he was being interviewed by the police. He was petting Shiro to calm him down. He kept on howling while licking the girl. As it turned out, she was still alive and just passed out. She regained consciousness when the ambulance arrived. The first aid team immediately took care of her wounds and decided to take her to the nearest hospital for further tests just to make sure she did not suffer any internal injuries.

Ash approached a police officer and whispered something, the officer nodded and scribbled something on his notepad. He then carried away Shiro from the scene and decided to call it a day.

While he's walking, he cannot help but visualize the girl's face on his mind. He wanted to thank her for saving Shiro but he does not know how to approach her earlier. When the girl was being positioned on the stretcher, she still tried to reach out to Shiro and pat him. He saw the girl smiled at Shiro and that was the time Shiro stopped howling.

"Do you want to visit the girl?"

"Woof! Woof!" while the dog started to wag his tail.

"Okay, let's see what we can do tomorrow."

Mr. Yang reached the news and got relieved that his son and his dog were both safe. His secretary handed out the paper about the girl's identity and Mr. Yang raised his eyebrow and looked at his secretary.

"Sir, she's our new scholar."

"I guess she really deserves the scholarship," and smiled. He told the secretary to take care of everything so that the girl would be comfortable in the hospital.

"Keep her alive, we need her."

The secretary nodded and he proceeded to print out all necessary documents to help Ms. Hazel Yin.
