Chapter 5: The Interview

Past...

Trust. That was something she could not give to anyone. Her situation decided it that way. Right now, only Rosabella Hyland and Finn Hyland knew about her existence but she had thought hard about it. She would make Robertz Hills pay for what he had done to her but her weakness was that she was weak herself.

She understood that she would have to change herself, to make some sacrifice. Her actual problem was Finn Hyland. He wanted to tell the world that she was alive but that would not be right because if Robertz Hills knew about her survival, he would make sure that she does not stay alive for long.

Finn observed her. She seemed to be in a great reflection. "Rosa, you tell me. What do I do?" If he trusted someone else's judgement better than his own one, it would be only from his wife who was a rational thinker.

"She needs someone right now, Finn and if this Robertz knew she was alive, he might kill her. You...I mean, we will be indirectly responsible for her death. We should help her. Not to take revenge but to get justice. Personally, if I was in her place, I would have think the same way."

Victoria went to the kitchen and handed to them a card. "I found it in my clothes."

She had not told them anything, but in the morning on her birthday, her father had given it to her. He had said that although she was not yet 18, he trusted her with money. He wanted to see how she would have managed a certain sum of money. Her father had always said that she would become his successor in his company but for that, she would have to learn additional skills.

Finn eyed the card that looked like a credit card, "What is that?"

"My father has given it to me. I would be glad if you can take out the money before Robertz Hills does it. The code is 7986."

Finn creased his eyebrows, "You are 17 years old."

Victoria did not fail to hear his accusing tone, "My father trusted me. Please will you do it?"

Finn took the card and slid it in his pocket. His phone rang and he answered, "Yes, I'm coming. Why? What? I have an urgent work. I'll reach later."

He ended the call and said, "Robertz did not allowed for any autopsy because he already knew about the identities of the bodies; that is, you, your father and your mother. I think he did not consider that it could be a driver. The funerals would be held in half an hour. You want to go?"

Victoria nodded and softly whispered, "Yes...thank you."

Finn wore his coat and headed straight to the bank. He met one of the tellers of the bank and said, "I urgently need to withdraw every of my cash."

The man asked him to wait for some times and he was given a form to fill in which he had to write the four character password as well. The teller checked in his database and again he went. Finn was getting impatient. What if Robertz Hills has already withdrawn all the cash? He might get himself arrested but he was the commissioner, so who will arrest him? The army? The government? The man came back with two suitcases.

"One million in each. Do you have a vehicle, sir?" If he was shocked, Finn did not show it.

"I'll take it, thank you." He took hold of each handle and walked out of the bank. He deposited them in his car and drove back home. He could not possibly go to the police station, carrying such a gross amount. He could not believe a man like Andrew Miller trusted his daughter with two millions dollars. Was he mad? She was only a small child and has not even got 18 years old.

Present

Victoria did not need an alarm to wake up. She was used to wake up early. One of the numerous things Finn had trained her to adopt. She had finished refreshing when she went to check her laptop.

There were several emails from her University friends which she would check later and there was one from Hills Industries. Her interview with Hills Industries would be scheduled at eight. She looked at the clock and there were sufficient time to dress professionally.

A good while later, she was getting out of a taxi. She was ready to enter hell. She was in front of the office that should have been hers. That should have belonged to her father. She felt a surge of energy. She would accomplish what she has hoped to do. The objectives were so close now.

As she stepped inside, she felt a fresh wave of the air conditioner above her head. Good. She needed to cool down; She was getting too excited to complete her revenge but she had to bear in mind that her steps should be taken carefully without any haste.

Things have changed inside. It had a new feel of technology but that did not matter. All that matters was to find where the receptionist was. Finally she spotted her. The woman was sitting behind a curved shape desk.

She headed to her and said, "Good morning. I'm here for an interview for the post of secretary. Victoria Hyland." The receptionist nodded and gestured to the elevator, "Top floor, last room to your left." Short but precise; she liked it. That woman would soon work for her.

She walked in the elevator and waited for what it seemed, an infinity till she reached that top floor. There were several persons before her. She supposed they were here for that same reasons; to get the job. Her only flaw in her C.V was that she had no experience but if she was not taken, she would make it a must to get into that building by hook or by crook.

The job was not important but her revenge was. She was the tenth candidate and no one came after her. So she understood that she would be the last one to be assessed. She was also the youngest one in that whole group. What if they did not take her because of her young age? She was getting annoyed with herself. It was like she was nervous to get that job. Would it be a one-one, panel or board interview?

After a long waiting, it was her turn. She knocked the door and walked in, "Good morning, sir." She closed the door and then realised she was looking at a familiar man. Jake Hills. She would ignore him. She had to. A professional approach was important.

Jake stared at her but said nothing. "Take a seat, miss. Victoria Hyland, is that right?"

"Pleasure to meet you, sir." Victoria sat opposite him and shook his extended hand. Their hands lingered a little more than they should. She broke the contact and waited. He was observing her intensely. Did she not remember him? Has she already forgotten about him? No, she couldn't. They only met yesterday in the plane. He had to find out.

He cleared his voice and said, "You have the potential for the job, miss. Your qualifications are impressive but you lack something that is very important."

He smiled privately when she frowned at him. He continued, "You lack the experience. The question is: will you be able to cope with the workload? It's not as easy as it seems."

She firmly responded, "Nothing is easy, sir. You have to work to make it easy."

Jake wanted to tease her but he had to maintain that distance for the moment. "So let's proceed. Tell me about your weaknesses." She was not surprised he asked that particular question, "I have a problem dealing with annoying persons who like to make fun of other people because they do not have anything more important to do. These people are not constructive at all and this thought irritates me." He wanted to laugh. He knew she was pointing at him.

For a moment, his ego has been insulted that she might not have recognised him. "You look pretty tired. Are you married?"

What kind of question that was. She wanted to strangle him, "For your kind information, sir. I'm single and I'm not tired." This word was sweet to hear when it came from her.

"The last question. Do you remember me, Kate sweetheart?"

Victoria faked a look of surprise, "Remember you? Have we ever met before, Mr Hills?"

Jake insisted, "Now. Let me tell you the story. You were in a plane yesterday and you met a really handsome man who is a CEO." Victoria wanted to slap him, "In a plane? I don't think I need a plane to come here, sir. I don't live abroad."

Jake smiled patiently, "Now Kate...It's me, sweetheart. Don't pretend." Victoria sighed. Why in the world her interviewer had to be him? But who was he?

She was suddenly curious, "Are you Mr Robertz Hills's son?"

Jake was amused by the question, "Yes. I'll see you in a moment to see if you got the job. If you excuse me, miss." Victoria stood angrily, "You dare call that an interview? Let's do it properly."

He also stood and innocently asked, "Do what properly?"

She gritted her teeth, "The interview."

"Are you so keen to get that job?" He lingeringly asked as he slid his hands in his warm pockets. She was frustrated, "You are unfair."

He acknowledged excitedly, "Wow, another adjective to describe me! You're great. Thank you for the compliment. The door is behind you."

She crossed her arms, "And the door will remain there till you grant me a proper interview."

Jake walked to her and looked at her seriously, "Go, Victoria. The interview is done and anyway, you don't have the required expertise for this job."

He was rude. When she observed him at that short distance, she knew he was not going to come back on his words. She knew that he was dead serious. She turned her back to him and coldly said, "Fine, as you wish."

Jake observed her when she proudly walked away from him and did not even turn to look back. She slammed the door behind her back and made her way to the lift. Victoria was annoyed. This was purely unfair to her but anyway, she learnt something.

Jake Hills was the son of her enemy. And the relatives of her enemy were also her enemies. She hated him.

"Victoria! Wait!" She heard him but she did not want to talk to him. Her plan has turned upside down because of him. She did not want to hear his taunts. She had much to do now. She was relieved the metal door of the lift closed right before he could enter.

Jake gave the elevator a bang with his fist. He hastily took out his cell phone and called the guards that were posted in front of the entrance of the edifice, "A beautiful woman dressed in brown business clothes with dark black hair will get out of the building in a moment. Stop her."

He was proud of himself. She thought that she could get away from him so easily. She was mistaken but he also made a mistake this time. He had thought that that she would beg him to give her that job but she was different. He knew that he had been unfair to her.
