Chapter 4: Double-Crossed

Past...

Although she did not want to eat, Rosabella managed to convince her to have at least a toast of bread with strawberry jam. Victoria was famished but she did not feel like eating anything.

The image of the burnt bodies were horrifying. She swallowed with pain the remaining piece of bread. Rosabella returned her attention to her after she received a call from her husband.

"Can you take me there?" Victoria feebly asked.

"Finn wants to talk to you first."

She was dismayed, "I don't want to talk. Who...who is Finn?" Rosabella sighed.

This girl was either really forgetful or still under the shock. She patiently responded, "Finn is my husband and also the police commissioner."

The door opened again and the man that has saved her, walked in. He headed directly to Victoria and knelt beside her, "I need your help, my girl."

Not wanting to answer any questions, she made a weak attempt to shake her head negatively.

Finn ignored her and suggested, "You can start by telling me your name and about the persons who were with you in the car."

She inhaled deeply and began, "I...I am Victoria...Victoria Kate Miller. My parents were in the car, Andrew Miller and Emily Miller."

Both Rosabella and Finn were astounded, "The CEO of Miller Industries? But what about the third body that was found?"

She flung her arms around him and sobbed, "Our driver, Henry Coster. I couldn't save them. I am at fault."

Finn cajoled her by lightly tapping her back, "Shh, you did what you could and that was brave of you but accidents happen, Victoria."

She released him and stared at him disbelievingly, "This was not an accident. It was a murder."

There was a moment of silence. Finn looked at Rosabella who only shrugged at him. Victoria continued, "A lorry collided with us and our car tumbled in the forest."

There was a determination in her voice that Finn did not appreciated. Something wrong had definitely happened last night and he wanted to know what exactly.

"Okay...but it was surely done involuntarily, Victoria."

She insisted, raising her voice, "No...It was intentional because...because, we receive a call in the car and a man spoke saying that we were doomed. He said that everything that belonged to us was his. And I know who he is."

There were tears of anger in her bloodshot eyes. The murderer of her parents were still alive. She pushed Finn away from her and stormed towards the door, "I...I will kill him."

Her father considered him as his best friend, as his own family and what did that man do as a thanks, he just killed them. He would pay. She was already outside when Finn grabbed her firmly and pulled her back inside, "Stop! I will help you. Tell me who he is."

Even though she was broken, she had all her head. She was a pragmatic girl and no one would take advantage of her weakness.

"First, promise me you will not do anything." Finn closed the door, stood before it with crossed arms and frowned at her.

"Now young girl, you better collaborate or you will not get justice for your parents."

She equally frowned as she approached him. She stared into his grey eyes and stubbornly said, "I won't! Get off my way. I don't need you. I can get justice for my parents alone! Goodbye."

Finn had had enough. She was trying to move him away but of course, how could she? She was way too small and weak for that! Finn had had enough and turned to his wife, "Rosabella, inform me when she will be cooperative. I've got lots of works pending at the station."

Out of nowhere, Victoria unmistakably heard the sinner's voice. She listened attentively and instantly rushed in front of the television and started at the screen as the financial consultant, the best friend of her father, spoke, "I...I don't know what to say. It is hard to believe. It happened so suddenly. When I saw the number plate of the car that the policemen had shown on the news, I knew it was Andrew's. I remember he told me he wanted to surprise their 17 years old daughter for her birthday. It has unfortunately ended in a tragedy. They did not deserve that. We all know how much the Miller family was generous. I take it under my responsibility to conduct the funeral of Andrew Miller, his wife Emily Miller and their daughter Victoria Miller. Excuse me."

He turned his back to the camera to wipe of a tear. Victoria shouted, "No...not you! I hate you! I hate you!"

Rosabella instinctively approached her and said, "Is he that person, Victoria?"

She never felt that helpless before. "Yes...Robertz Hills, he is the financial consultant of my dad and...and he killed them."

Finn who could not fit some missing parts in her words, asked, "How can you be sure?" Victoria wanted to shake him.

That man was not helping her at all. He was repeatedly firing questions at her. She wondered if she could trust him. Not having anyone to turn to, she was obliged to do so, "Because I know his voice. Haven't I told you? He had called us before the lorry crashed with us. He said that we were doomed. I know his voice. I have known him since I was little. Do you believe me?

Now the world thinks I am dead but you both know I'm not. Please, I want to get justice for my parents and for that, I have to live. If he come to know I'm alive, he'll kill me and maybe he'll also kill you. The man never leaves any stone unturned. Will you help me?

Present...

"No, I don't like it. The room is too dark and the road is just in front. I hate noise." The apartment locator sighed.

That woman was hard to convince. She always found something wrong in the different apartments he had proposed her. Victoria patiently turned to the man and asked, "Are there any other complex you can show me?"

Customer satisfaction was really important and the man opened a catalogue to let her choose. That catalogue was opened only in desperate measures and this one was a desperate one. She was professionally dressed and it was this type of people that his business like to treat with. "I like this one."

He looked at the picture and said, "This one, miss, is expensive. And moreover, another client has asked us to reserve it for him."

Victoria asked, "Your client has paid you?"

The apartment locator answered with hesitation, "No...but he made it clear that he wants it."

Victoria smiled at him, "I'll take it and I'll pay you two months in advance right now. Your client has surely forgotten about it."

The man was doubtful, "But...I am not sure."

Victoria has learnt how to negotiate in her business courses and that man was adamant. "Let me propose you something. I'll take that apartment and when your client comes, he can meet me and I'm sure we will find a good agreement between us but as for now, till he does not show you his face, I will have the apartment. What do you say?"

The man sighed deeply. The client was always right after all. He removed a paper and said, "Can you please sign, ma'am?"

She arched an eyebrow in surprise, "Now? Let me at least have a look first. Of course, since your service is so good, you'll take me there, right?" It seemed that she would not take a 'no' as an answer. So there was no point in arguing.

Victoria marched down the stairs followed by the apartment locator. When they reach the floor, Rosabella and Finn who were sitting at a table chorused, "So?" They were tired for they had almost visit all the complexes in New York City. So when they have reached this one, they were so exhausted that they decided to wait in the ground floor itself.

Victoria responded with a triumphant smile, "Mr Potter will make me visit." They both embraced her and said, "Work is calling us, sweetie. Call us when you've reach." She waved to them and followed the estate agent to his car.

"I hope I'm not wasting your time?" Victoria asked as the man started his car. He smiled sweetly at her, "Not at all." Really! I am fine with wasting half my day, following you! Women! Why are you always so choosy? He had stopped at his agency, had taken the key and in a fifteen more minutes, they had reached.

Victoria was amazed. It looked smaller in the picture but she liked the place. It was quiet, away from the road and very few neighbouring houses. She opened the door and inside, it was just like she had imagined. Neat, cosy and perfect for her.

She turned to the man, "Well, thank you Mr Potter. Where should I sign?" He tended to her the paper and she secretly smiled when she heard him taking a breath of relief.

"Here you go. Thank you."

"Thank you, ma'am." She was not surprised when he hastily got into his car and drove away. She admitted she had been quite difficult. They had wandered around New York City looking for the perfect place. She went to the nicest room which was now her room and opened the window. She took a full view of what laid behind these windows. It was perfect as she had a full view of her enemy's building. The perfect view. Every morning as she would wake up, this view would remind her of her goals that needed to be achieved.

She would erased this Hills Industries and that too, very soon. She just had to wait for an email from Robertz Hills. Him employing her would be his greatest mistake. She would slowly snatched everything from him just as he had done to her.

In his office, Jake was comparing the different job applications he had received from several candidates for the post of secretary for his father. He would not have been doing that if he had not foolishly fired the last one. That woman had forgotten to give his father his medical pills for the cold that he had caught.

He had already made a shortlist of the most competent ones among the hundreds of job applications. Their qualifications were remarkable. He decided he would see only ten of these people. He forwarded the emails to these ten lucky ones and tomorrow they would have the pleasure to meet him.
