Chapter 2: The First Sight

Past

When commissioner Hyland came back to his car, he observed that the teenage girl was sleeping in the backseat. The constable stood by his side and sighed, "She didn't answer to any of my questions."

Finn Hyland noticed her red shirt, "Darn, she's hurt. I'm taking her home."

He hastily checked her pulse, afraid that she might not be alive but to his relief, she was. Not unconscious but sleeping probably out of tiredness. This site would be examined tomorrow.

It was still raining not as heavy as it had been a while ago. He drove his car out of this road and headed straight to his house. He had promised his wife he would returned earlier but unfortunately though he was not in his uniform, his duty never came to rest.

A while later, he managed to ring the doorbell with his head as he was carrying Victoria in his arms, His wife came to open, "You better tell me why you're late or-" She stared at the young girl he was carrying and hastily urged him inside.

"Finn! What happened? Quick, put her on the bed!" How he loved his wife! She understood him like no one else would do. She was a proficient doctor working in Fortran Hospital.

Hardly did he put Victoria on the bed that his wife, Rosabella, was already examining her. "She's got a severe cut on her shoulder, Finn. Why didn't you take her to the hospital?" The commissioner sighed, "I didn't know it was that grave, Rosa."

Rosabella Hyland was not even listening to him. After having applied a healing paste on Victoria's right shoulder, she gently bandaged her. She instinctively caressed her hair and covered her with a blanket.

Finn Hyland observed his wife. She would have been such a perfect mother if only he could have given her that chance. Despite knowing he could not give her a child, she married him. "You are my love. We have laughed together. We love each other and we will suffer together." She had told him when they were younger. This sentence always made him emotional.

"What are you thinking?" She asked as she turned to him.

He approached her, kissed her forehead affectionately and said, "Nothing. By what I understood, Rosa, her parents have died tonight in a car accident. I'll have to tell her that again when she awoke and see of she has any relatives. Then, we'll inform the court."

"Poor girl, I swear Finn; sometimes life is just too unfair. She's still young."

Present

After his unusual threat about not letting her go till she apologised, Jake did not add anything. It's been a while since he has been frustrated to such an extent. That woman was not talking to him but was busy reading that stupid book, devouring page after page as if he was non-existent to her.

She did not seem to give a damn that he was Jake Hills in person. He swore not to add any other words till the plane landed and it would be just in a few minutes. Even though, he was impatient and tapped his fingers on the arm of the chair.

"We are going to land in four minutes. Please remain seated and wear your seatbelts," said the air hostess that has been trying to seduce him since she set her eyes on him. Too bad for her; he was not at all interested.

Neither in her, nor in any other women. Finally his waiting would come to an end. The woman would apologised to her and he would savour every moment of her defeat. She had started the fight but he would end it. Strange, he did not even know her name.

The plane has landed. Victoria as well as the other passengers stood from their places to take their suitcases. She stopped, half surprised and half not.

How was she ever going to go if that bastard would not remove his legs from her way? He smirked sinfully at her and huskily said, "Are you not forgeting something, sweetheart?"

By the way she was looking at him, he knew she wanted to kick him. Victoria felt sick, "Don't call me like that."

He arched an eyebrow, privately smiling, "Then what's your name, sweetheart?" She once again dared ignore him and was looking at the remaining passengers that were already getting off the plane. She seemed to be worried about something. Jake smiled evilly but would not budge, not till he got what he wanted.

Today was not her day. She wanted to crash that devil businessman who was sitting in a relaxed manner in front of her way. She could not walked over him for God's sake.

She politely asked, controlling the temper that was forming inside her, "Can you move off my way, please?"

"Nah, the apology first."

She gritted her teeth as she eyed her wrist-watch briefly, "When I've done nothing wrong, why should I apologised, Mr Hills?" So innocent, so guilty.

He then stood and faced her, "Because you insulted me." She was astounded. He was taller than she had thought and she had to raise her head slightly to look at him but she was fearless. In fact, it was people like him that she wanted t compete with. She liked when she taught lessons to such people but this time, it was obvious that she did not have the lead.

"You...you deserve to be insulted. You are selfish!"

He dangerously approached her, cornering her against the wall of the airplane, "And what else?"

She frowned as he put his hands at the two sides of the wall but he was a gentlemen enough not to touch her. He was so close that she had to look away so as not to touch him and continued,

"You are arrogant, proud, irritating and despicable."

He leant closer now and urged her, "I want to hear more. Talk."

She slowly gazed at him. Their faces were inches apart. His cologne was intoxicating. What was she doing? What was happening? She creased her eyebrows and placed her hands flat on his chest, "And also you are mad, mister!" She gave him a hard push and added, "Yes, go and visit an asylum. There are vacancies there!"

He laughed at her and stepped back, allowing her some space. "You look agitated. Is there anything wrong?"

She grabbed her suitcase and answered, "Apart from the fact that I'm present with a 1st grade fool, nothing is wrong."

She sent him a death glare and walked towards the exit. As she descended the few stairs, he said as he slid his hands on his pocket, "You still owe me an apology, sweetheart!"

She corrected as she gave him a last look, "Dare to call me that once again."

He smirked, "See you soon, sweetheart!"

She did not turn to look at him. She appeared to have found what she was looking for. He observed her as she hassled her way towards a couple and hugged both of them for a good moment. He snorted. Huh, sentimental girl... He was back into the plane to meet the pilot when he caught sight of the book that woman had been reading.

He looked at the title. The Perfect Revenge. He opened the first page and mumbled, "With love, for Kate from Finn H. Kate...seems to be her nickname." When he looked out towards where he last saw her, she was already gone.

"Sir, I hope you enjoy the trip."

Sure he had enjoyed. It had been fun to annoy that Kate. "The service is fairly good. I need more innovation here. Pass on this message to the company."

He shook his hand and stepped out of the plane. The air hostess waved to him, gesturing him to wait but he had no time to lose with her. He headed towards a black mercedes and slid inside before any lucky journalist would see him, "David, let's go to the building."

The driver was startled by the sudden voice. He had dozed off while waiting, "Sir! It's good to see you. Hills Industries? But you've just arrived from this trip."

Jake patiently said, "David, my work is pending. Better do what you planned for tomorrow, today itself."

The driver jokingly added, "Like get married? Your dad is still waiting for your response. I'm having trouble explaining your absences from your rendezvous with the girls he chose for you."

Jake pouted, "To hell with him and this foolish idea of getting married. I'm better off single!"

David shrugged, "You'll tell him what you told me."
