Chapter 2

My head snapped to the side as I stared at him wide eyed.

What the hell is he doing here?!

"You two know each other?" asked Adrian as he looked between the two of us.

"Yeah, Xavier was a member of my old pack," I reply to him with a strained smile.

"Yeah, just a member," Xavier said mockingly, as his eyes pierced through my own. He quickly shifted his gaze to my mate and nodded at him. "Adrian."

"Xavier, I'm glad you and your mate could come tonight," Adrian said, politely. My eyes kept shifting between the two of them.

How did Adrian know Xavier?

I gave Xavier a tight lipped smile out of courtesy and turned around to face Adrian. "Won't you introduce me to the others?" I smiled sweetly.

"Come on," He says as he breaks eye contact with Xavier.

We walked up to an old couple and they both hugged Adrian. "Serena, I want you to meet Ruth and James, they're both like my parents," He said.

"It's nice to meet you both," I smile.

"Alpha James, Luna Ruth; Serena is my mate," Adrian introduced me in an... apologetic tone? I felt a pang of hurt hit my chest but I shook it off - I was looking into it way too much.

"We're happy for you Adrian," Alpha James smiled genuinely at him.

"Yes, I think you deserve this after everything you've been through," Luna Ruth's eyes seemed to fill with pride yet pain seemed to linger in them, her lips curved up as her smile reached her eyes.

"Thank you," Adrian let out a breath of relief, and for the first time since I've met him, he smiled.

What was that all about?

"Do you happen to know Shane Montgomery?" Luna Ruth asked me.

"Yeah, he was my father," I replied with a faint smile.

"No wonder you looked so familiar! Your mother and I were very good friends," She gave me an enthusiastic smile.

"You knew my mother?" I asked in a surprised tone.

"Of course! Who didn't? She was one wild and fierce woman," Luna Ruth chuckled.

"And if she's anything like her mother, then good luck with her Adrian," Alpha James laughed heartily and patted Adrian's shoulder. My own lips seemed to lift up genuinely.

I like them.

After a few minutes of chatting, the elderly couple got into a deep conversation about different packs so I decided to excuse myself.

"I'm just going to go get a drink," I turned to leave but Adrian caught my hand before I could go.

He was about to say something but then closed his mouth and just let me go. I gave him a questioning look but walked away. My feet lead me towards the bar and so I ordered myself a drink. The bartender hands me a glass as I sat on one of the barstools. I took a sip from the wineglass as my thoughts sprang in. How did they manage to make a bar in here? I mean, it's not possible yet somehow they did it.

"I see you found yourself a boyfriend," A voice said behind me. I didn't even have to turn around to see who it was.

"What to do you want?!" I turn around and snap at him.

"You," He grabbed my forearm as I was about to walk away from him.

I laugh mockingly and gave him a sweet smile, "You have a mate and so do I, now, so I suggest you let go off me. Now."

"How -" He started but was cut off by a cough from behind. Xavier let go off my hand and shot me a look before turning around.

"Alpha Xavier," Dylan nodded at Xavier curtly and Xavier just nodded at him before walking away.

"Luna," Dylan addressed me with a smirk on his face.

"Don't you dare tell anyone, especially Adrian," I threaten him in a low voice.

"Don't worry, your secret's safe with me," He chuckled. I shot him a look before sitting back on the barstool.

"So, he was your first mate?" Dylan raised a brow.

"How do you know that I had a mate before Adrian?" I ask him, my brows furrowing.

"I'm the beta, so I know everything going on with the alpha, I was actually ordered to find out who your first mate was," He shrugged as he took a swig from his beer.

"Did you tell Adrian it's Xavier?" I questioned.

"Not just yet," He replied.I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in and look around to see if Adrian was somewhere near.

"Oh, I forgot what I came for," Dylan suddenly said and I turned around to face him with a raised brow.

"I came to apologise, seeing as my first impression of myself to you wasn't that good, so I'm sorry," He said awkwardly.

"You want me to forgive you?" I retorted with an evil smirk.

"Yes," He coughed uncomfortably.

"Then earn it," I smile. I'd make sure to make it hard for him.

My gaze strays to Adrian as I see a girl standing awfully close to him, their hands intertwined. A heavy feeling enshrouded my chest.

"Who's that girl standing by Adrian?" I couldn't help but ask Dylan.

"Jealous?" He smirked, taking a gulp of his beer.

"Answer the question," I gritted my teeth together in frustration.

"That's Aubrey," He said. I've heard that name before somewhere.

"And who is that couple?" I point at Alpha James and Luna Ruth.

"They are the parents of Luna Clarissa, Adrian's first mate," Dylan answered with a hint of sadness lacing his voice.

"You people really miss her, don't you?" I ask softly.

"Yeah, she was like the heart of the pack, in fact every Luna is the heart of the pack and we lost ours," He said.

I wanted to ask what happened to her but I think it's a really touchy subject around here. I just smiled at him and looked behind my shoulder and saw a few couples dancing around. One of the couple's happened to be my mate and his slut.

"You wanna dance?" Dylan offered me his hand and I raised my brow.

"To make him jealous," He said casually.

"All right, but not because I want to make Adrian jealous, just because I'm bored of sitting here," I lie.

"Okay," He chuckled.

I took his hand and he led me to the dance floor which was quite huge for just a few guests. He put his hands around my waist and I encircled my arms around his shoulders.

"Do Adrian and Aubrey have like a relationship or something?" I ask trying to keep my jealousy inconspicuous.

"Not that I know of," He twirled me and pulled me back to him.

"You're a good dancer," I complimented him with a giggle.

"You need to know all these little things in order to keep up the playboy reputation," He replied smugly to my compliment.

"So you're saying, you're a playboy and you're proud of it?" I asked with a roll of my eyes and he nodded.

"What about your mate?" I ask as the song stops and we stop dancing too.

"When she comes along I'll only be hers," He smiled and we walked back to the bar.

"Aww, she'll hate you for being such a playboy, you know?" I ask rhetorically.

"I'm just too adorable to be hated," He replied in a cocky tone.

"You are mistaken," I chuckle and get another glass of wine.

"I should go back to my date before she comes and kills me," He said as he stood up and walked away.

I yawned and kept the glass back on the bar. I looked at my mate one last time before walking out of this darned party. I'm just going to call it a night even though it's just nine, right now.

"Where are you going?" Someone caught my hand and I instantly knew who it was because of the tingly sensation that engulfed me once he touched me.

"I'm tired so I'm going to go sleep," I reply with a fake yawn to make my lie more believable.

"You're the Luna, you can't just walk out of the party," Adrian's hold on my forearm tightened.

"Okay let's get a few things straight shall we? One, I have not accepted you as my mate yet and two, I don't think I will, seeing as you have got someone else to fill that spot and three, please, go back to your slut!" I snap before pulling my hand away from his grip.

"Well, you were dancing with Dylan too," His eyes had turned black now.

"You're impossible!" I snap before storming away.

What does he think of himself?! Asshole.

I walk to my room and pull my sneakers off. I hate him! He is an annoying bastard who claims that I'm the Luna of the pack yet he goes around with a girlfriend. What a hypocrite! I could smell her scent all over him!

I walk into the bathroom and strip out of the clothes I'm wearing and step into the shower after adjusting the temperature of the water.

'You do know we can't handle another rejection right?' Reign, my wolf, sighed.

'Don't worry, we'll be fine, we've been through it before,' I reply to her.

'That was 'cause we had the hope of a second chance but there never is a third and you know it!' She snapped at me.

She's like an annoying inner voice, the only difference is that, she's a wolf.

'Correction, you had the hope of a second chance; not me, and I don't need a mate,' I shrugged. Reign shut me out after that and let me complete my shower routine. She'd come around then. I knew she was right, that I won't be able to handle another rejection, but I'm pretty sure I'll be fine. I might die but I really can't spend my whole life with a jerk like him.

I wrap a towel around my body once I step out of the shower and walk over to the closet I had made mine, putting on a pair of black shorts and a white tank top. I decided to sleep and let tomorrow bring what it must as I laid down on the white sheets.

A knock made me sit up as Caterina walked in. "Hey," I smiled at her.

"I was wondering If you needed anything to eat or drink," She fidgeted with her sleeve.

"Adrian sent you?" I asked.

"He's very worried about you," She replied.

"Well, I don't need anything but could you just explain to me one more time where the office is?" I smiled sheepishly.

"On the second floor, you should go down the hall then there are two turns, so take the left one and go down that hall, the black door to your right is his office," She explained while moving her hands trying to explain me.

"Okay, thank you," I smile. She turned around to walk away but I quickly stopped her.

"Wait! Is the alpha in his office, right now? Or is he still at the gathering?" I asked.

"I'm pretty sure he's still at the gathering," She replied.

"Okay," I smiled at her and she walked out of the room. I quickly put on my black robes and walk out of my room. Muttering Caterina's instructions like a mantra, I made it to his office and barged in.

"Looking for someone?" I turned around to see who it was and I let out a breath of relief.

"Dylan! What are you doing here?!" I snap.

"I could ask you the same thing," He retorted.

"I came to check if Adrian was here," I replied impassively.

"I was sent here to make sure that you don't come here to do something stupid," He grinned.

I groaned and sat on the chair opposite to him, my eyes rolling on their own accord.

"You know I heard what you said to Adrian," He said and I looked at him with a questioning look.

"I was not eavesdropping," He said defensively. I narrowed my eyes at him and he just smiled innocently at me.

"Maybe a little," He brought up his thumb and index finger to show me how much he meant by little. He was practically pressing both fingers together and I raised my brow at him.

After a while of silence Dylan spoke and I looked up at him.

"After Clarissa died, it was as though Adrian died with her too. But the day you showed up it was as though we got our alpha back and if you give up on him, he might fall over the edge, just don't reject him," He looked at me. It looked like he might cry. Now I feel guilty.

"What do you mean fall over the edge?" I ask.

"He's been through a lot in his past that you don't know of, and it's not my story to tell," He replied. We sit there for a while in silence until it got too awkward.

"I'm just going to head back to my room," I smile softly before walking out of the office.

That was something.

'Another reason for us to stay,' Reign spoke.

'Now you wanna talk?' I raise my brow.

'Yeah, well!' She snapped.

I wonder what Dylan was talking about but I'm going to find out.

I hoped that it wouldn't be that hard.
