Chapter 2

Kiya turned away for the second time from the mesmerizing grey eyes. She knew she was blushing and her heart is beating like crazy but she forced herself to walk away, again. Meanwhile the owner of the grey eyes smiled wickedly as he watched the fleeing Kiya. Cain just came back in time for the exams, he just didn’t expect that he’d meet his mate the first day he came back to school. Two years ago, he entered the two year exchange program of his school and he just came back last week. The school had let him rest and prepare for the exams for a couple of days that’s why he was present now. Nothing has changed for him, he talked regularly with his friends and family through calls and video chats that’s why he felt like he didn’t leave at all but it seems like there is a change.

Cain remembers that he had first seen Kiya during a pack gathering. He is afterall the son of the Alpha and his job was to overlook people his age and he had noticed Kiya standing quietly in a corner, focusing only at the food on her hand. He had heard things about her family at that time; still he made a move to approach her but his friends have distracted him. The next time he occasionally saw her was when he started high school or at the places she worked at. Cain could now understand why he always noticed her whenever she was close. He just really didn’t expect her to turn out to be his mate.

It started this morning when he decided to walk instead of taking his car. He took off early since his house was a little bit isolated from town but nonetheless, he arrived before the bell could ring. However, just as he was at the school gate, the sweet scent had attacked him and before a minute could pass, he was already looking at Kiya who was in turn looking at him with a blank face. Suddenly she blushed, averted her eyes and ran away. Usually, when werewolves meet their mate, they’d be lovey-dovey the second they met but Cain seems to have realized that Kiya had not had her first wolf shift yet, she just feels the pull. Werewolves have their first shift at the age range of 15 – 21 years old, males usually earlier than females. When they meet their mates and the other has not shifted yet, their mate bond is not strong but still there.

Kiya was surprised she actually finished all her exams for the day without stress despite her distracted state. Thinking about her “distraction”, her heartbeat raced up again but she didn’t blush this time. She ran away, twice, because she simply didn’t know what to do. It honestly never crossed her mind that she actually has a mate. Even when she sees werewolf couples like her parents, nothing crossed her mind about her own mate. What horrifies her as well is the fact that her mate is the one and only son of the Alpha, Cain Foster. Currently, she had left school in a hurry and went straight home where she is restlessly pacing around. She didn’t bother trying to sleep like she always do before she’s off to the pub for her shift or even bother studying since she only has two last minor exams tomorrow. However, in the end, Kiya gave up, emptied her mind and dejectedly went to the pub. The pub, as usual, was quiet on weekdays and Kiya was left to do nothing when she finished serving the few guests they have. She let her mind wander to Cain, giving up on fighting the urge to think of him or even ridiculously miss him when he is literally a stranger to her but still she welcomed everything hoping it would help solve her dilemma. A while later, she stopped her thoughts before she could give herself a heart attack and decided to wipe the tables instead to make herself busy.

Cain had asked around for Kiya since she ran away before he could finally stop teasing and catch her himself instead but the answer annoyed him.

"She is working at the local pub."

He knows that the local pub is just a place to chill but it still worries him that she's working there. It even crossed his mind to stop her from working there but as much as he wants to do it, he didn't want to control her life. He knew her past just like everyone else and he wanted to know more but not at the expense of scaring her away with force. He took his time in going home and changing clothes before he took his car to the pub. When he opened the door, the sweet scent had greeted him first before the other scents of the pub followed, he saw her at his right where she was frozen in place, surprise written all over her face as she gawked at him. He smiled and then went to sit at one of the booths near the window. He didn't turn to look at her anymore but waited, for a long time, for her to approach.

"Finally, I thought you'd take forever." Cain blurted out when Kiya was finally standing in front of him, appearing composed but is actually fidgeting with her notepad.

"I'm sorry. What can I get for you?" There was a slight shake in her voice but Cain did not answer for a while and stared at her.

"I want... you of course." Kiya's face immediately turned red and Cain laughed before settling down to look at her seriously. "Kiya, you can't avoid me forever."

Kiya's heart tightened when he said her name but she saw his seriousness and she looked down, unable to meet his eyes anymore. She sighed but still didn't look at him before she spoke.

"I know. I'm sorry. I just honestly didn't know what to do. I could only run away." She explained in a weak voice. This was actually the first time that Cain is hearing Kiya's voice.

"You shouldn't make that a habit. We'll talk later when your shift is over and I'll get a coke and fries please." Cain smoothly said and Kiya took the chance to flee.

When Kiya went to the kitchen, her face was still burning hot and it amused her co-workers. This was afterall the first time they ever saw that kind of expression with her and they couldn't help but peek out to see who the culprit is. When Kiya took the order to Cain, they watched as the usually careful Kiya almost tripped on her own feet before she could arrive at the booth. They laughed when her face turned bright red when Cain flashed a smile, she quickly left once again. The werewolves present in the pub had already started to suspect the relationship between the two while the humans thought that it was just a crush on Kiya’s part.

True to his words, Cain waited for Kiya until the pub closed at midnight. She had slowly walked to him with her backpack and had quietly gotten in his car. There was silence, Cain wanted Kiya to speak first and it took a long time for Kiya to realize it. She gathered the courage she could muster and turned to face him.

"I need time, that's all. I'm just surprised because I never expected or thought about my mate. It just didn't cross my mind."

"But you want me?" Kiya's blush returned but she nodded. "You love me?"

"I should naturally do." This time Kiya looked at him with a weird expression. It made him chuckle and he reached out to hold her hand. The touch sent sparks in their body.

"Then I'm yours." He said and kissed her hand.

The warm sensation covered Kiya's whole body and her worries were set free. She concluded that Cain is her mate and she can't do anything about it, she decided that it's best if she just go ahead and go with the flow.
