Freed

Nan Xi received a few winks from a few female police officers on duty as he and Shaojun roamed about the station to check on the 'Strange Girl', as Nan Xi nicknamed her, held in custody. According to the officer on duty, the girl, who identified herself as Xue Rufeng, appeared to have a memory lapse as she could not remember how she had managed to enter the building at all. Since Rufeng had no degree of suspicion and the cops could not find any weapon on her during a body search, they kept her in remand for about forty-eight hours. Still, because nobody had come to fetch her from the station, she had been staying in the station for three more days.

Another peculiar fact had been that the name 'Xue Rufeng' did not exist in their national citizen database or that of the INTERPOL. However, her looks had matched that of a university student in another city with a clean record named Mu Xueyi. So, they took as she was messing around and had entered Shaojun's flat by mistake, assuming he had forgotten to lock his main door. She was also unwilling to talk, and when she had spoken, the officers had difficulty understanding her language because she had prioritized the usage of very ancient forms of Chinese language!

"Don't you think she's pitiful?" Nan Xi asked Shaojun. "No friends and family, and you called the cops on her because she showed up in the bathroom when you were taking a shower!"

Shaojun ignored him. Benevolent as he was, at that moment, he had noticed her grasping a blade! Furthermore, she wore a peculiar attire that had warranted his suspicion. Perhaps she had a few screws loose?

They strolled down the walkway to arrive at one of the holding cells in the station, where the officers had mentioned 'Strange Girl' was confined inside. Inside the holding cell, a young woman with jet-black hair flowing down to her back engrossed herself in staring at the blank wall. Nan Xi had a closer look at her, observing her be a woman of rare beauty. Unlike how she had clad herself earlier in that weird getup resembling a cheongsam of obsolete fashion, she already had a change of clothes and was now wearing a plain tee and trousers.

Shaojun realized her attractiveness now that the sword was no longer existent, and thus the fear of being hacked to death by such a blade no longer tormented him. The minute she turned around and noticed them, she immediately recognized Shaojun and groaned, "My sword... my sword... why is it gone?" She had a photographic memory, and just one look at Shaojun was enough to remind her that he was the same man who she had seen half-naked in the bathroom five days ago!

"Yes, your sword. Why is it gone?" Shaojun questioned the confused woman. "You were holding a sword when I saw you, where did it go to?"

A restricting look from Nan Xi along with a hand gesture for him to stop, caused him to end the sentence immediately.

"We offer to take her back to the university where she belongs. I suppose it's just a joke, and she got the wrong flat unit," Nan Xi declared confidently to the female officer. She took his ID, and scrutinized him closely, before instructing her colleague to release the girl. She then handed over some papers to Nan Xi to sign, before returning him his ID.

Rufeng fathomed that it was futile for her to do anything, but follow the men out of the station since she was now in a world she did not know and was thus scared. Still a little shaken by all the events that had happened for the last five days, all she could think of was how to get out of that horrible room with bars, enclosing her that she felt like a caged bird! She found the people in that place, whom she understood to be this world's equivalent of the constables back in her times, sported bizarre hairstyles and unique clothing. They also held in their hands, a peculiar black device that they appeared to talk to each other through, and in an unknown foreign language. Their communication seemed to be in codes.

But above all, the matter that confused her significantly was how her sword had disappeared the very moment she had a run-in with that strange man! It had appeared to dissipate harmlessly into thin air, and when the peculiar people arrived and held her down on the floor of the bathroom, her weapon had vanished! Everything had happened in just a split second, and then she was lying on the floor. She blamed it on the fact she was overpowered and outnumbered by the bullies! And then, they had just pushed her into a 'box', together with them, and it had brought her here!

"Why are you so insistent in bringing along this unknown woman?" Shaojun asked. "Who knows, she could harm us..."

They headed towards the car, with the woman wedged in the middle of the two of them. "If I wanted to harm you, I would have done so earlier," Rufeng declared solemnly.

"We will send you to the university then since that is what we promised," Shaojun lazily said.

"What about the sword?" the girl suddenly asked, as Nan Xi bundled her into the car. "How can I get it back?" She played with the cushions of the vehicle, touching them slowly to adapt to the unfamiliar feeling of the material on her fingers.

"Yes, what happened to the sword?" Shaojun repeated his question from much earlier. "Probably, you should tell me how come the police didn't find any weapon on you? You ruined my curtain and frightened me, so you should pay me compensation."

"She likely has no money," Nan Xi confirmed. "The station provided us with what she was taken in with, and it's only some weird coins, her old clothing and er, bells." He dangled a bag above the girl's head, and she hastily seized it.

"That's mine," she said.

"Who are you?" Nan Xi asked. Shaojun started the car and manoeuvred it into a moving position, exiting the parking space he had taken. The sudden movement of the vehicle caused her to hit her head hard on the window, and she groaned in pain. Nan Xi repeated his query once he had pulled a safety belt over her, and had ensured she was correctly seated.

"Xue Rufeng," she answered proudly. "Last generation demon slayer."

"How do you expect us to buy that?" Nan Xi shot her an 'I don't believe you' look. "In the twenty-first century, demons no longer exist, and demon slayers are already extinct."

She eyed him quizzically and mentioned a few names from her memory, but Nan Xi had not heard of them.

"I can prove to you my identity if you can assist me to recover my sword," she claimed, in her ancient Chinese language. Fortunately, Nan Xi was a history major after all, and Shaojun could somehow understand her as well, without much trouble.

"What's in it for us?"

"It will be interesting," she stated brightly. "Perhaps we can seek out all the demons in this world, and they can bring you some riches."

"Neither of us is in urgent need of money," Nan Xi explained meticulously. "But, we could make use of an adventure. Right, Shaojun?"

"Yeah." Shaojun focused on the road in front of them and drove down a ramp to enter an underground parking lot of a nearby mall. All of a sudden, Rufeng began screaming hysterically, "We're going deep into the earth and into the ground! Are we going to die?"

Both men exchanged stares and sighed deeply. This girl was just full of surprises! Was she even from this world?
