Chapter 1: The Devil in Disguise

The matriarch of the Mahanta family was flipping mad!

She had spent the last 3+ decades of her life building this family’s power and its reputation and her idiotic children were hell bent on destroying all her hard work, especially when she is right on the threshold of achieving her biggest dreams, of becoming a public servant, a politician serving ‘her’ people’s interests!

She had worked too hard and too long for these people to trample her ambition under their stupidity.

She had remorselessly removed every obstacle from her path, stepped on every stone and person that would take her up….sometimes at the cost of personal feelings and familial bonds, but no price was too high to pay when striving for success.

Nothing had stopped her then, why should things be any different now?

But right when she thought things were finally under her control, her stupid worthless spawn had to go and make trouble!

Though it isn’t something that can’t be handled, can't she even have a second of peace? Can’t she enjoy the fruits of her years of labor, quietly? Can’t she just sit back and breathe in some fresh air without her own children spoiling her mood with one of their idiotic antics?

Why could’t her remaining progeny be like her late eldest two? They had been smart, intelligent, highly accomplished, respected, and respectful.

They had been the perfect examples of being filial sons until they had gone against her wishes and had to consequently pay the price for it.

No one, not even her own children were allowed to go against her wishes!

Hence, they were taught a lesson. A lesson that ensured that her remaining son and daughter towed the line without any quibbles.

But that was water under a 15 year old bridge.

What had to be taken care of was taken care of. What had to be removed was removed. Things had been pretty smooth after that.

Did she regret that? Their thoughts do creep up on her every now and then, but only when her mind is free! But the regret is not about losing them, the regret is in losing their potential.

They had so much going for them. But they had to go and choose an option that she had not given them. They had dared to be willful and had the nerve to go against her wishes.

What was she supposed to do? She couldn’t just let them do what they wanted! How will the rest of the world respect her, listen to her, if her own children act mulishly against her?

So she had taken care of the problem and the problem children. It had hurt her for a second, but sometimes big sacrifices have to be made to achieve big things!

And so she had...sacrificed her most prized possessions, her eldest sons, to the altar of her ambitions, without any regret.

This move of hers, ensured that nobody doubted her intentions ever again, nobody had the nerve to go against her, and most importantly, no one dared to underestimate her ever again!

But just when her years of hard work had been about to come to a cohesive fruituition, her foolish daughter had created trouble.

And guess who will have to clean up the mess? Her….a tired, old lady has to now clean up the mess her 45 year old spinster daughter had created!

Ugh, so hateful!

Shouldn’t it be a child taking care of her mother? Why is she the only one burdened by children whose messes she has had to clean, even when they have grown up to be functioning adults?

The last time she had had to clean up the mess was 15 years ago. And what a mess it was! At least this time there wasn’t a low-bred, low-class waitress involved, nor her two illegitimate children, claiming her eldest son as their husband and father, respectively!

What had her son called it? Ah yes...Love….pfft! Love!

They had the audacity to sully her pure noble bloodline because of a silly emotion called love, and expected her to accept this relationship and the resulting offsprings with a happy grateful heart! As if!

She was Saavri Mahanta, architect of the Mahanta Empire. No one has the drive and the vision that she has.

If it wasn’t for her single-minded determination, a young widow with four young children would have been eaten alive by this misogynist society.

But she had risen above the norms; trampling on its head to single-handedly build the Mahanta status and prestige from the ground-up.

No one, literally no one had the right to mess with her creation, not even her children!

Her influence, her clout, her name, were a force to reckon with in the community. It had taken her years of hard work and sacrifice to build that. She couldn’t let a chit of a girl and her brats destroy that just because of a greeting card emotion!

So she had forced her eldest son to form an alliance with the Raichura family through marriage.

They were from the same community, the family was at par with theirs in terms of status and their clout and riches were far greater than hers.

But their biggest plus point was their daughter, who was an only child, and the sole heir to the Raichura fortune.

But what had that idiot son of hers had done? He had decided to elope with his “family” and live a peaceful life away from the reach of the Mahanta family and away from her!

A far-seeing businessman dancing to the tunes of a measly waitress! Ridiculous!

So she had taught them a lesson that even their souls won’t forget even after multiple reincarnations.

People’s memories are fickle. After all this time they only remember what she wanted them to, that is, her eldest and second eldest sons died in a car accident some 15 years ago!

That waitress and her wailing brats have not just been erased from existence but everyone’s thoughts as well.

Getting rid of a pesky waitress and her 2 kids had not been as difficult as one would imagine. It was trying to control her eldest son after that, that had taken some ingenuity on her part.

But she’s not Saavri Mahanta for nothing! How could she not manage her own son?

41 days in a closed room with no sunlight or food or water, no outside noise or contact, had worked wonders.

When the body gets no nourishment and eyes see only darkness all around, the mind automatically takes control. Once the mind has the reigns, all the useless emotions of the heart are grounded to dust!

And once that was done, bringing over the lost child back to the fold wasn’t that difficult.

Yes, he was a bit listless and disorientated, but that was to be expected. Being led astray and away by a vixen from the bosom of his family had really done a number on him.

She would have nourished him back to perfect health and state of mind in no time, if only...

If only another one of her gems, her second son hadn’t interfered.

Because of her eldest son Mohit’s ‘delicate’ condition she had transferred the profitable Raichura alliance to her 2nd eldest Khushal.

A brilliant scientist, unaware of the world in general, he was another perfect progeny of hers. With his mind occupied with science and its mysteries, he was mostly disconnected to the real world.

What was said, what was done, he hardly knew or cared about it. Whatever was told to him to do, he usually did without questioning her either.

But unexpectedly he had woken up after marrying that Raichura girl. Not only had he dared to question her, his own mother, he had gone a step ahead and condemned her behaviour of saving his eldest brother from the clutches of that gold digger and her illegitimate spawns!

How dared he? She was his mother and the head of this family. What she did or will do, everything was for the betterment of this family and its future generations.

Why couldn’t people understand this simple fact?

But no, he had to question her authority and had the guts to threaten her with legal consequences!

Threaten her, Saavri Mahanta, with legal consequences! Ha!

But for his unusual behaviour, she didn't blame him. The blame lied with someone else.

She could very clearly see the hand of her newest daughter-in-law behind his actions and her teachings behind his words.

But what broke the camel’s back was when they tried to take Mohit away from her. How dared they? That was just too much!

So she had once again found a perfect solution to the problem - she arranged another accident, this time, especially for them.

It conveniently removed the obstacles from her path in one master stroke.

It was in a fashion similar to the approach she had taken to remove that dirt Kajal from her Mohit’s life.

But as luck would have it, the rebellious chosen-mother-of-the-future-Mahanta Empire had survived her plan for her.

Well that was good in a way as well. Now she had someone to vent her anger on for destroying her two most promising stars, her two eldest sons Mohit and Khushal.

So she planned and plotted and kept the poor-little-rich-girl by her side till she was made to understand that actions have consequences.

She was let go only when she had no one at her side; no family, no money, no nothing!

This was to teach her that nobody messes with Saavri Mahanta! Nobody!

Because she doesn’t forget and she definitely doesn’t forgive, ever! She just gets even!

Even when left with 2 useless children, a son and a daughter, she has managed to take the Mahantas to unprecedented heights.

They create messes, she cleans them up. They will be indulged, their mistakes forgiven, as long as they are under her roof and listen to what she says.

Therefore, like a loving parent, once again she’ll clean the debris crazy Carina has left in her wake. But did she have to poke the hornet of the past?

Whatever, she’ll just quickly take care of it because she has no time to waste.

She has planned such glorious things for the Mahantas. Her dear granddaughter Sara would be instrumental in the next stage of the rise of the Mahantas to never before seen heights.

And the ladder she has chosen this time belongs to the owners of the Érevna Laboratories Worldwide, the Kohlis!
