Chapter 4

Stiflingly a yawn, I tapped the off button on the screen of my phone to stop the annoying alarm from ringing. I chose to wake up so early to shower, simply because I wanted to have the whole bathroom to myself and not have any creepy girl step into the one I was using.

Yesterday was scary, embarrassing and gave me negative vibes. I'd just wear a paper bag over my face. Hopefully, no one would tag me with the girl who puked on Mr- I didn't even know his name... shoes.

Chuckling to myself, I remembered how I got scared from seeing a pair of legs behind me yesterday.

It was Evelyn.

Evelyn had done nothing, but to scare me ever since I got into this school.

Putting on my flip flops that were mainly for the bathroom, I pulled off my silk night wear and headed for the bathroom in a yellow towel.

The dorm lobby was lonely and quiet. This place screamed nothing, but horror and depression. I remembered how terrified I was when father said Debby and I were going to be students of a Catholic school he saw when he was driving in from a journey.

Father's absent that week was like heavenly Bliss. We were free like birds and did as we pleased.

The air suddenly became thick with something that was very hard to explain. Scrunching my eyebrows, I halted and was having a rethink.

Maybe I should just go back to my room and wait for the other girls to wake up.

No, I'd just take my bath. I mean, it was five o'clock and Sundays were church days.

The girls might wake up by six and I didn't want to be watched by so many girls or asked why I had a scar on my waist. There was nothing to be afraid of.

The early morning breeze whipped cool in my face and blew the thick blue curtains around gently. Taking two steps forward, I felt uneasy and got thrown aback by what I heard.

"Hephzibah." The voice of a young woman whispered my name.

In one insane second, I dashed into the dark room by my left hand side and held onto the handle of the door.

Wait, this wasn't my room and who leaves their room open by this time?

Who is trying to mess with me?

This school was a whole lot of creepy and then some sociopath was trying to send me to an early grave.

"Who are you?" Dry toned by a girl, the supposed owner of this room I guess.

Still holding tight to the handle, I swallowed the frog that was sitting in my throat and answered.

"Sorry, I mistook your door for mine. I'll take your leave." I answered without turning around to see who it was.

I twisted the door handle and just as I was about to go out, she called out to me.

"Wait, I know you." She turned on a tiny torch and pointed it at me. "Ah, blue eyes." I could feel her smile from the way she spoke.

Covering my eyes from the light, I wondered if she wanted me blind.

"Oh, sorry." She pointed it elsewhere and guess who I saw?

Evelyn!

This girl was everywhere, but why? Her mission was to scare me and maybe blind me.

Maybe she's your guardian angel.

I felt like slapping my head for that kind of thought. Guardian angel that wanted to give me a heart attack? Plus this wasn't one of those fantasy movies.

"I know you too." I strained a nervous laugh.

Instantaneously, she sat on her bed with her legs crossed. It felt like she was stiff for a moment. Her eye balls turned black and looked bigger.

"Are you ok?" I asked and suddenly felt I over stayed my welcome. Whoever was lurking around in the lobby must have gone now.

She shivered on the spot she sat and muttered things that felt like she was speaking in tongues. This terrified the spirit out of me.

My eyes twitched and I distanced myself from her bed. My small figure spun around to make it for the door.

Instantaneously, she clutched my wrist. Her palm was hot like she just got it out of the oven.

"Be careful. It is what manifests in the dark that is the real threat," she said in a hush tone before letting my wrist go.

Down right creepy!

My brain said run but my body couldn't move an inch. I was paralysed.

Her eyeballs became soft brown and they returned to their normal size.

"Can I follow you to the bathroom?" She asked like nothing creepy happened.

"How did you know I was going to shower?" I asked and it felt like I was realised from whatever paralysis I was having.

"The towel." She got off her bed and undressed. This girl was creepy. I didn't know how to act after what happened.

Should I ask her what that was all about?

I've not had a comfortable bath since I came to this school. Evelyn showered with me again, but in awkward silence this time around. Surprisingly, she didn't ask me about my scar.

I studied every move she made and wondered who Evelyn was. I was aware I could have told her no when she said she wanted to bath with me and I could ask her to stay away from me, but for some reasons my mouth wouldn't say that and I wanted to know if she was mentally deranged or not.

*************

After changing my dress for the hundredth time, I finally got what I felt was appropriate and stylish.

"What do you think?" I did a 360 for Hazel and Debby.

"You look dazzling." Hazel complimented with a gleam of delight.

"I'll rock this gown more than you, just hand it over already," Debby said, causing me to throw my pillow at her. "Hey! You changed how many dresses. I even went to shower and now I'm done dressing, but you're still standing and I'm sure you're contemplating about changing that dress."

"Nah, this is the chosen one." I smiled and stood for her to zip me up. "Thanks button."

Button was something I'd always called Debby because of her small figure. Unfortunately, she was a bit taller than me, but I wasn't short. My height was 5'4.

Walking to the mirror, my reflection stared back at me in a fuchsia, colored ball gown that was slightly above my knees. My hands rested on the bow that was sewn to the waist of the gown.

I was pleased with the hair Hazel did for me. It was packed into a double, Dutch braided topknot. The silver agate earrings I wore radiated my beautiful eyes.

"Those earrings compliment your eyes." Hazel pointed out, putting on her flats. "Your eyes look innocent like a child's laugh. I must say I'm envious of them."

I smiled and nodded thank you.

We all got dressed and headed for the church. The campanile, which was a gigantic bell was being rang, meaning it was time for us to gather as brothers and sisters to worship the Lord.

I cringed at the brothers and sisters word.

The campanile and church came into view. It was weird how the closer we went the more distant it looked, making my little legs feel worn out. Finally, we were just in front of the gothic building that towered above us in Ash color.

My heart was beating against the walls of my chest when we stepped foot on the facade.

The facade had a large circular window above the entrance of the church. My eyes traveled down from the window to the trumeau which was a section of pillar between the two large doors of the church. A semicircular tympanum was depicted above the door ways. Father said a tympanum was a framework or scenarios from the old testament or Christ himself. My lidded eyes studied the tympanum and noticed the figure of Jesus Christ at the centre of other sculptures.

The sound of liturgical music and the loud sound of the campanile made me jerk. I hastily took a step back and-

This wasn't the floor.

I turned around slowly and was mesmerized by the beautiful obsidian eyes and for a split second it felt like those eyes could look through my soul.

I was brought back to my senses by the shove this mystical creature gave me. "What is it with you and my shoes?" He scowled.

Wait, I know this voice. This must be Mr Adidas, the guy I puked on his shoes. Suddenly, I felt heat climbing up my cheeks and I put a considerable distance between us.

"I'm so sorry." I apologized with my hands on my chest. " Here, let me help."

I bent to wipe his shiny cover shoes that reminded me of our pastor with my hankie. Two warm hands held both of my shoulders and pulled me up, causing a burning sensation on where he touched.

"I don't need you to ruin them more. I don't want vomit on my shoes again." He snarled and I could see anger flashing in his shiny black eyes that was sitting gracefully above a pointed nose and average sized lips.

"I'm so sorry about that day, I didn't mean-" he stopped me mid sentence by holding a hand to my face.
