The Lumber's Heart

This story happened a long time ago in an unnamed town in the midst of a mystic woodland where a clan of witches lived. Town folks called them “The Lumber Witches”. In many centuries, people in the near town tried to hunt this Lumber Witches to kill them because they believe this witches brings death and bad luck.

Old myths say that Lumber Witches had implausible beauty. People alleged that Lumber Witches gained their beauty by taking off a man’s heart straight from their chest and eat the whole thing. In this way, Lumber Witches may preserve their power and lived long even without food or drink. And if they failed to do this, they will die. But there’s a very important requirement to make this ritual effective—they must make the man fall in love first.

Lumber Witches traditionally practice this ritual when the young girls of their kin reach their sixteen. That is also the time where this young girls are allowed to roam outside of the mystic woodland in search for their very first heart…

…And Luna was one of them.

Luna had already turned sixteen and she’s ready to have her first heart. She’s really excited since it is her first time to see the outside world. It’s about time that she and the rest of the young girls are about to step out of the mystic land. But there’s a very important reminder that the Elder of the Kinfolk conveyed:

“You must not fall for the man you are supposed to kill. It must be the man who should fall in love on you first…”

Luna dredged up those reminders into her head and eagerly continues her search for the very unlucky man to fall on her hands. She went to many places, discovered so many things and meet numerous people—but she still can’t find the right man who could certainly fall in love on her. Until one day, he met this young guy named Peter who worked as landscape gardener in a huge plantation of flowers. But unlike any normal guy, Peter was a bit unusual---he’s blind, so there’s no way he can see Luna’s beauty and fall in love on her. But then, love truly has its own eyes. Luna and Peter became friends and eventually Peter fall for Luna, not because of her beauty, but because of her heart.

But here’s the highlight…

Luna also fell in love for Peter.

One night, Luna went secretly to Peter’s house and gaze on the young man’s innocent look. Then Luna recalls the warning that the Elder of their kin had told them:

“You must not fall for the man you are supposed to kill. It must be the man who should fall in love on you first...

A clear molten had run down from Luna’s eyes while holding a dagger in her right hand to crop out the young man’s heart. But before she dig the dagger into Peter’s chest, the young man moved a bit and spun on the other side of the bed. Luna distant herself for a moment while tears still running out of her eyes.

“I can’t do this….” She said.

She silently placed the dagger in a table and slowly drew near the young man. Then she pressed her lips into his cheeks and said…

“I can’t take your heart, because you’ve already taken mine.

After that night---Luna disappeared, and Peter wasn’t able to meet Luna anymore. Death was Luna’s price for choosing the one she loved—for letting the young man to take her heart.
