CHAPTER FIVE

Lily walks past a group of drunk women dancing without rhythm to slow music that's currently playing in the bar. She stops in front of her friends' table in excitement. She drops her bag on the table and claps. "Touched up my makeup, I look fabulous. Now, tell me what you got on him."

Lily had asked the crew to stalk a guy she met at the bar on all platforms to know the conversations she will be having with him, to get him interested in her. Lily is known for her multiple personalities, she can decide on who she wants to be based on the situation and the man.

"First off, take two or three steps back." Maggie waves her off. "That cologne is choking."

Lily rolls her eyes but does as told. "Come on guys, give me something." She urges.

"Well," Mindy starts, scrolling through her phone. "He is a private guy, Instagram locked and Twitter also but we were able to get him on an old Facebook post. He’s an IT guy, he’s basically a nerd.”

"I don’t know shit about IT.” Lily sighs. “But I’ll figure it out.

"Guys," Mindy turns her phone screen to Mindy and Lilly’s direction. "I think I have fucked his brother." She says showing them a Facebook picture.

Maggie folds her arms, looks at the picture then at Mindy.
"And I am the whore?" She raises her eyebrows at her as she pops an olive into her mouth.

"Fuck you." Mindy cusses, taking her phone from their faces to zooms in on the picture.

"Speaking the hell is Josh ?" Lily asks gesturing at the empty chair where Josh was minutes ago.

"Oh, his Ex showed up. He left to say hi and we haven’t seen him since." Mindy mutters, mockery all written all over her face.

Lily rolls. "Ugh, she is going to fuck that loser again." She shakes her head.

“Well my luck, I don't get to make my move on that Scarlett first,” Maggie says with a smile on her face.

"Don't be too sure about that," Mindy responds, gesturing to the bar.

"What do you-" Her words stop when she sets her eyes on Maisie and Scarlett leaning on the bar counter, having drinks and a conversation.  “Does she know Maisie is engaged?”

"I don't think so, not everyone is fortunate to have a fiancé who proposes with a shiny diamond ring to chase men off," Mindy says showing off her ring for the thousandth time to her friends.

"Well, I am going to help her poor," She emphasizes on the "poor". "Poor fiancé by stopping whatever is happening there."

"Why don't you wait a minute so that the reek of desperation and loneliness wears off," Lily comments with a tight smile.

It’s a delayed come back for the time she told her to take several steps back steps.

“Good one.” Maggie chuckles knowingly.

"Hmmm, I sh-should go." Steve stutters nervously. He turns, quick on his feet, he disappears from Scarlett sight as he intended.

Scarlett shifts on the barstool to face Maisie's direction. Maisie looks at her with a blank expression on her face.

"What?" Scarlett asks letting out a low laugh.

Maisie looks down at the drink she has been nursing for twenty minutes now. The second she takes a sip, she knew she should have just ordered water.

"I don't know, I think you were being a bitch," Maisie says honestly. She slowly looks up to catch her reaction, contrary to what she is expecting, she is smiling.

Steve had walked up to them and tried to get into a conversation with Scarlett.  He tried using a story of his kids as an ice breaker but Scarlett had a passive response throughout the conversation. She clearly showed that she wasn't interested.

Scarlett is a bitch, she knows that. She really doesn't care much about people but she tries, she makes an actual effort to care. Only for her family, of course, she doesn't have the strength to put in that much effort for outsiders. Well now, there's an exception.

She is smiling because she has been called out for being a bitch a lot of times, but this is the first time she cares.

"I can't control my facial expression when I feel someone is sulking up to me," Scarlett says with a half shrug.

Masie scoffs, "Sulking up to you? How highly you must think of yourself." Maisie adjusts on her chair so she can face Scarlett direction fully. “Do you think I am sulking up to you?" She folds her arms, her eyebrow raised.

"Now that you mentioned it-"

Maisie gasps dramatically as Scarlett lets out a hearty laughter. Her laugh makes Maisie laugh.

"But for real, Steve is a kind person-"

"Kind? What's your definition of kind?"

Maisie sighs, "I don't know, I guess.." She pauses for a while to think. So deep in thought, she doesn't realize she picks up her drink and took a sip, till it hits her taste bud. She drops it immediately.

"Someone who treats people with dignity, irrespective of who they are, even on their bad days."

"Then I guess, you must be kind." She mutters resting her hand on the counter.

Maisie chuckles as she shakes her head. "I am not." She rubs the back of her neck. "You don't know me well enough to think so."

It's funny to Maisie to be referred to as kind. Her thoughts aren't. It's a constant struggle for her to separate her thoughts from her actions.

Her attention goes to her phone that's on the counter when she hears a short buzz. She picks it up to see a message from Daisy pop up on the screen.

Daisy: I will be able to drive down to your place but I can't stay the whole weekend.

Maisie sighs after reading. She feels like she should be grateful that she is coming but then again she's sad, sad that her sister doesn't want to spend time with her.

"See, a reason why I am pretty sure I am not kind." She says dropping her phone on the table.

"Enlighten me," Scarlett replies shaking her glass of cocktail. She had noticed a change in her mood once she saw the text.

"How can someone that's kind be hated by her own sister?” Her shoulders fall in defeat.

"How can someone that's you be hated at all?” The words roll out of her mouth before her can think about it.

Thinking she made her feel uncomfortable with her compliment. She looks up, only to see her smiling. That angelic smile that has her seated in a bar that's not usually her scene, talking to people she wouldn't usually talk to, just to get to see and appreciate.

Feeling Scarlett eyes burning on her, she clears her throat before asking. "Do you have siblings?"

"Yeah, a brother and a half-sister." Scarlett states. "My sister, Raina, is from my mum's second marriage. She is pretty awesome. She is so passionate about societal issues and she is just 16."

"She sounds pretty cool." Maisie comments. She watches her talk about her sibling with so much admiration and it makes her a little sad.

She wishes she has that with Daisy.

"And my brother, not to brag, but he is my best friend." Scarlett whispers, "Don't ever tell him I said that, we are currently in a fight."

"Not to brag? You sound pretty braggy to me." Maisie rolls her eyes.

Scarlett chuckles. He then pauses to look at her. "I don't think your sister hates you." He whispers.

With a sad smile, "I guess we will find out over the weekend." She says.

Maggie comes out of nowhere and squeezes in between the two of them. Scarlett leans back.

"Hey," She says with a smile which she directs at Scarlett. “How hot are the girls in here? I am so not straight.” She chuckles.

Scarlett gives a forced smile as she shifts her purse closer to her.

Maggie turns to Maisie, "I need to talk to you about work. It's important."

Maisie raises her eyebrows in confusion, "W-what?"

"Can we talk over there?" Maggie gestures to the corner in the bar which seems quiet. She doesn't wait for Maisie's response before she walks away.

"I'll be right back," Maisie informs Scarlett before jumping down from the barstool. She picks up her phone and walks to where Maggie is standing.

"What's so important?" Maisie asks.

"What do think you are doing?" Maggie huffs, folding her arms.

"Excuse me?"

"Don't you have a fiancé or something?"

"Uh- I-"

"Uh- I-" Maggie mocks her, "You do. So what are you doing with Scarlett?"

Maisie lets out a low laugh, "What are you talking about? We are friends."

"Since when? When did that happen?" Maggie asks, "Stop playing with yourself, she is hot and gay as fuck.”

"If this about the dibs you-."

"This is not about me." Maggie interrupts. "Fine, if you guys are friends, have you mentioned that you are engaged?"

Maisie's heart begins to race in realization. She hasn't mentioned that she is engaged like she always does when a guy tries to hit on her. Not that she thinks Scarlett is trying to hit on her or any trying. But why does she feel guilty all of a sudden?

"Our conversation hasn't led to it." Maisie defends. Her defence is mostly to the inner voice in her head that's condemning her.

"Why don't I help direct your conversation in that direction." Loren puts her hands on her waist.

"You don't need to, I am already leaving. You can continue flirting with her." Maisie mutters rolling her eyes.

"Aww," She puts her hand on her chest, "Thank you,” Maggie says with a tight smile.

Maisie shakes her head before walking to the bar counter where Scarlett is having a phone call.

"I got to go," Maisie says, picking up her bag and her jacket. "See you tomorrow."

Scarlett hangs up. "W-wait," She calls out to Maisie but she is already walking out the door.

Maggie walks up to her, sits on the bar stool that Maisie was sitting then picks up her remaining scotch and empties it with one big gulp.

Scarlett’s eyes are on her as she planned.

She looks up at her with a coquettish grin playing on her lips. "Oh, Maisie probably left to see her fiancé. They are very much in love and they are getting married soon."

"Fiancé?"

"Yeah, she didn’t mention it?” Maggie asks feigning innocence.
