Chapter 2 - Family

Chapter 2

Brooklyn Grayson's Pov

"Look I'm giving you another chance lady. Walk away now and all would be fine. Or I would make your life a living hell because you have no idea who you are messing with." I couldn't help but to think back about what that rude, impassive, cold-hearted man said.

"My life is already a living hell go for it." My life is already a living hell there is nothing possible for him to make it worse.

How could he? Who would give up the chance of letting their father survive and return to their lives? I know I would do anything to have mother back...

"Brooklyn? Doctor Elizabeth is looking for you in her office." One of the nurses said. Great. Now I could possibly be losing my scholarship in Columbia because of my inability to keep my mouth shut.

Knocking on the door gently, I took a deep breath before I walked in and faced the music.

"Ah. Brooklyn. Sit" She gestured for me to sit before leaning forward from her table. She's the head of my department, technically my boss here who oversees my performance. She might be well into her fifties and served as a motherly figure among her students.

I fidgeted around nervously. I'm a good student, I never caused any problems before. Please don't revoke my scholarship, I prayed silently in my head.

"Miss Grayson. I know what happened just now at the ER. Your intentions were right and kind but you of all people should surely know that the choice to sign the surgery papers is fully up to the families. You cannot make a scene and force them to sign the papers." Doctor Elizabeth said in all seriousness.

"I know but – "

She held her hand out to stop me. "I also know from a lot of the doctors here and your professors back home that you are one of the brightest and best student they have. You have been shining brightly here and I have no doubt that you would be a great doctor in the future." She smiled before she continued. "However this behavior cannot be tolerated. What would others think of our hospital image when they heard that the doctors here actually force them to sign the consent papers?"

I visibly froze, bracing myself for the worst. I can't believe that by trying to do something good it would end up with this.

"Doctor Elizabeth in my defense, in order to become a doctor we swore an oath that we would value lives above anything else. What did I do wrong when all I wanted to do was to save the poor man?" I couldn't help but blurted out. It's the truth. If this is what people get for trying to save people. How can we expect them to continue saving lives?

She raised an eyebrow at me. Shut up Brook you're only going to make it worse. I mentally slapped myself. Why can't I keep my damn mouth shut and not further ruin the situation?

"I was told to revoke your residency program at our hospital here and put it down in your permanent report."

"Before you finish that." Something inside my brain clicked. "One of the family members was actually about to sign the papers until his own brother tore the paper to pieces. I only gave him another paper and encourage him to signed it. So it means that I did not force him but rather just encouraged him to sign the paper without being afraid of his siblings." I smiled proudly at my comment.

There was a good minute of silence between us before she continued again. Did I say something wrong now? Seriously what the heck is wrong with me!

"But I would leave you off with a warning this time. Don't repeat the same mistake again. Are we clear?" She winked and then returned to her seriousness.

"Really? There would be nothing on my permanent record?" Well that just changed fast. Not that I'm complaining though.

"Miss Grayson. I am going to record this down on paper to put it in your file. But I am going to misplace the paper. As long as you don't repeat the same mistakes twice, the paper will remain misplaced."

Hold on. Did I hear that correctly? Nothing on my permanent record? "Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!" I reached over and hugged her. "I won't let you down doctor."

"I know you won't." She hugged me back lightly. "Now you can take the day off and say that you're suspended for a day by me. You deserve some time off."

I flinched. "Actually I would rather not. Would you mind if I continue to stay at the hospital until I finish my rounds? Or I could stay in one of the rooms to study."

I just really really don't want to go home.

"I'm afraid not dear. The rooms are being used now and I would say it is best not to return to work with what you cause today. Go on go home. Take a good rest and come back tomorrow."

"Okay..." I said softly. I hugged her one more time, thanking her once more before I made my way out of her office.

I was elsewhere preoccupied when I walked straight into a hard chest. "Woah. Watch where you're going Brook."

"Hey." I smiled to Zach one of my best friend here in the hospital. Being one of the smartest and good looking guys both at school and here he has no problems hooking himself up with any girl but somehow that stopped a few months ago.

"There you are!" My other best friend, Rebecca almost shouted as she ran towards me and hugged me."I heard about what happened. What did they do to you? Did they take away your scholarship? Those bastards. How could they give up saving their father. You didn't even do anything wrong. I'm going to have a talk with Doctor Elizabeth now. They can't do that to you."

I laughed. That's my best friend who's practically my sister. We grew up together since we were 3. She's the friend that would protect you no matter what and jump into my defense at any second in a heartbeat which I would totally do the same for her. "Everything's fine Beca. No need to tear anybody's head off especially if she's the one who is supposed to help me get through this program."

"That's good. I'm glad I still have time before I'm thrown into jail for murdering somebody who hurt my best friend."

I hugged her tightly. There's a reason for her overprotectiveness we don't talk about it but I know how she feels and what she thinks. I don't blame her though she's only trying to help. "Why are you here anyway? Shouldn't you be at NYU?

"Some bimbo shared the video of some family ridiculously good-looking gene pool of siblings who wanted to give up saving their father. Got to admit though it was the guy who was obnoxiously rude that caught my attention before I saw that you are the girl in the video. Who would have known somebody as good looking as that is so rude and cold? Such a waste of good physique."

"All good looking guys have a shitty attitude." I laughed and rolled my eyes.

"Hey a very good looking guy standing right here and he is very offended." Zach said, putting his hand on his chest to emphasize his pain.

We both looked at him and stuck our tongue out being the mature adults we are. "Hey Beca since your off now. Can I crash at your house tonight?"

She instantly knew what was up agreeing immediately. "You don't even have to ask. Mi casa tu casa."

"Hey you can spend the night at my place." Zach offered. "It's kind of lonely living alone in a big loft."

Beca raises a questioning eyebrow at me. Challenging me to change my mind. "No thanks. I'll stay over at Rebecca's we have a lot to catch up on. But you could grab another random girl to spend the night with you at your loft. I'm sure they will be more than happy to comply." I winked at him. I don't mean to sound rude but we both know it is the truth. Besides, it's not like he will mind anyway. He knows I don't mean it.

"Maybe I will. Thanks for the idea." He counters back. "I guess I'll be seeing you tomorrow then?"

"Of course. Bye Zach. I'll see you at your place Beca."

Reaching home I was welcomed back with a mess of empty pizza boxes, burned food in the microwave, half eaten food unattended and as usual a bunch of empty beer bottles laying around the floor. "Jeremy?" I called, but with no reply.

I made my way through the whole heap of mess, trying my best to clean it up. This man really has no regard for tidiness I sighed. After a good hour of cleaning up, I finally got the place cleaned up minus the bad stench of beer still lingering in the air.

"Jeremy!" I called again before I ran upstairs to check on him.

And there he is headphones on and his head dunk down writing his homework. I rolled my eyes. He is such a nerd, probably worst so than me. I yank his headphones off and turned his chair to face me. "What?"

"You didn't answer me when I called you. I thought something happened to you."

"Sorry I was doing my homework." He apologized.

"Where is he?" I asked. Not like I'm going to be surprised by his answer anyway.

"I don't know. He wasn't here when I got home."

"Okay. I'm going to spend the night at Rebecca's you fine on your own?"

"Yea I'll be good. I can crash at the library or at Jack's." He grabs his bag pack.

Neither one of us really likes to stay home. And if we do we'll lock ourselves up in the room hoping that he doesn't barge in drunk. Normally I would try my best to spend my time at the hospital during my rounds or crash at the school's library too while Jeremy spends most of his time at one of his friends or like me at the library.

"HOPE! BRODY! Get both your asses down here." The both of us froze. "Shit. His drunk." I muttered.

"Go to your room and get your bag. I'll be fine. Meet me at our usual spot." Jeremy said before he pushed me to my room. "Quickly."

I ran to my room softly trying my best not to make any noise at all. He probably doesn't know that the both of us are home yet before he comes barging in. I grabbed my bag and threw all of my essentials inside along with my books before I crawled out the window and climbed down the tree. Jeremy was already there waiting for me at the back of our yard.

"You okay?" I asked.

"I'm fine. He didn't realize we were home. I'll see you tomorrow." He hugged me lightly.

"Stay safe." I only have him and he only has me right now.

Rebecca's family was more than happy to have me over. They were like a second family to me, always welcoming me with warm arms. I feel more comfortable at their place than mine which is a total nutcase. They know my family background and yet they never judged me, and for that I am eternally grateful. I missed this kind of feeling. The feeling where a whole family sits together to enjoy dinner.

"You okay?" Rebecca asked me when we were both laying on her bed.

"I'm fine. I just don't get why would that family give up on their dad? I would do anything to save my dad." I sighed.

"He still drinking?"

"Yea never got better after my mom you know left us."

"It's been 2 years since she died Brook. You and your brother got over it. Why can't he"

"He used to love her very much. They were high school sweethearts. We were the perfect family... He was with her in the crash when it happened. I guess he never really got over the fact that he failed to rescue her and had to watch her die in front of him."

"What about you and Jeremy? He's not okay to let his wife die but he is okay to let both his son and daughter fend for themselves especially fend themselves from him?"

"I don't know Becca... I really don't."
