That Night

Just as she was about to feel more forlorn she saw her mother and Zakia coming towards her room. It was heart wrenching to see her mother’s drooped shoulders. She was holding handkerchief so tightly that her knuckles were turning white. She hugged Derek and started crying hysterically. He patted her shoulders and gestured Zakia to hand over the glass of water from the table. Her mother held the glass with shaking hands and took a sip which calmed her down a bit. Derek made her sit on couch carefully and then there was an awkward silence.

“What happened?” Derek.

The silence was broken by her mother’s question . Sarah was all ears now. She really wanted to know what exactly had happened. It was strange that she had memory of older events but couldn’t recall at all how had she ended up in the hospital. She was as eager as her mother to know about this incident.

Derek took a deep breath. He seemed to be gathering courage to narrate the nightmare.

“We were all set to go to dinner” .oh yes memory flashed back in Sarah’s mind.

Dangling jewelry, earrings. She was wearing golden hoop earrings .Black dress, bracelet something shining was in her arm. She reminded her self that her body was there to confirm that. Every time she had to gather new strength to take a look at herself. There it was her favorite bracelet's mark etched on her arm. It must have gotten into her skin. She did not even want to think what doctors had done to take it off.

Derek was speaking in hardly audible voice. Sarah wanted to step forward and say that it’s ok. He doesn’t have to do this. He doesn’t have to feel all over again by telling it out loud . But this wasn’t the day for things to go her way.

“We were hardly away from our destination”. Continued Derek while staring at the floor “her cell phone was continuously ringing which was disturbing us”

Yes her cell phone rang in her ears.. yes her phone was ringing which annoyed Derek so...

“So she took out the phone but could not hear the other person” told Derek. “I said her to simply switch off the phone and get back to who ever was calling her once we reach the restaurant. But she argued and said it would take a minute so she got out of the car to see if the signals were any better outside”. Abruptly Derek stopped talking and took a step towards Sarah’s body. His face was expressionless when he said “and that was it within a split second a car hit her and that was it” tears rolled down his cheeks.

He couldn’t continue neither it was required. The rest was there unconscious and injured in front of them.

It was too much to absorb for the infirm mother. She started crying again. Zakia stepped forward to console her but broke down in tears herself. Derek patted her shoulder and suggested that she take her mother home. She was old and fragile besides all the waiting would probably drive her crazy. Zakia made a call to her driver and instructed him to drop Sarah’s mother at her place. Now it was Sarah, her body and the two very important people in her life ,her best friend and her husband. The both were so quite each lost in their own thoughts. Sarah wanted to console them, hug them wipe away the worry but like them she had no choice but to wait which at that point seemed like forever.
