Chapter 38

Caleb was sitting in a chair beside Olivia, where she was sleeping peacefully in a hospital bed.

So much has happened in the last few hours that it was difficult to take it all in at once.

When Livy shot herself, not only Caleb and Carson but even Dominic was shocked by her action. But luck was on their side. Like in movies, the police choose a perfect time to show up with Jiggy and David.

While police officers arrested Dominic and his troop, others rushed Olivia to the hospital, and immediately, David made it his own duty to treat Olivia.

Both the brothers were shocked to learn that James had finally gained consciousness from coma during the operation. But unfortunately, his condition was still weak, so he couldn't come to the hospital.

It's difficult to imagine James' situation. Instead of being surrounded by his family, he was awake only to find his sister missing, let alone in a case where she was herself in the middle of a situation of life and death.

Fortunately, doctors were able to remove the three bullets, but she had lost too much blood. The chance of her waking up was not slim, but it wasn’t good as well.

It’s all up to her if she wants to wake up or not.

Everyone was worried sick about Olivia in hospital; here she was in her own dream world. Everything was white. She was walking straight, only to find two happy figures standing in front of her. She rushed towards them and hugged them tightly. “Mom, Dad, I miss you so much.” She was sobbing in their arms.

“We miss you too, Livy.” Her dad squeezed her shoulder.

“We are so sorry, Olivia. We couldn’t be the best parents that you, James, and Cameron wanted us to be.” Her mother spoke to her softly.

“No, you are always going to be the best parents for us. But mom, how can I see you? I remember getting shot... Am I dead?” She asked them in confusion.

“Only if you want to be. It’s your decision to make.” Her mother stated.

“What do you mean?” Olivia asked them with a frown on her face.

“Livy, at present, you are neither dead nor alive. Even if you choose to die, you will be with us. However, if you choose to live, you will return to the Knight’s family, your friends, James, and Cameron.” Her dad told her.

“James... mom-dad, will he survive? He is in coma.

“You have to find that out, sweetie.” Kelly, her mother, patted her daughter’s head.

“What should I do?” she asked her parents in confusion.

“Olivia, it’s completely your decision. We cannot answer that for you. Either way, we will support you. But remember that it will be hard for you to recover if you decide to stay alive because of the way we both treated you. Your uncle treated you. So, it’s completely in your hands. What do you want?

Olivia was thinking hard. If she stayed alive, she might have her life back to normal. Maybe it will take time, but it will definitely get back to normal. And what if James woke up, not only to find his parents dead, but also his sister? And she would never want Cameron to be deprived of her sister’s love. Then there was the Knight’s family, who had worked tirelessly to keep her safe while also unconditionally loving her. Not to forget her friends, she cannot put them in the same situation again, worst by dying. She didn’t even get to say goodbye to them.

“I think I know what I want to do.” She said with a smile.

“We knew that you would choose the right path.” Her mom hugged her.

“Olivia, honey, we will always love you. We will be looking after you from here. If you ever miss us, look at the sky, and you will feel our presence. Give our love to everyone there, especially Cameron. You did the right thing for him. Both are a lovely couple. Say hi to David and Ella and tell them that they are really the best friends that anyone could ever ask for, and thank them on our behalf for taking care of you. And, by the way, we approve of Caleb.” Her dad said her final words and kissed her forehead.

“Caleb?

“You will understand it soon. Now go. Your family is waiting for you.” With her parents' last words, she gained consciousness.

When Olivia opened her eyes, she was surrounded by doctors who had a relieved look in their eyes and the Knight family, who were very worried about her.

It was devastating for them to see Olivia in this state. Before she opened her eyes, Olivia's heart stopped for a bit, but miraculously, it started beating again.

When she finally came to her senses, everything was hazy, from checks done by doctors to hugs given by everyone.

She was in her own world, trying to comprehend everything. She was completely numb. She didn't even speak a single word except what the doctors asked her to say.

In fact, she was feeling claustrophobic and wanted nothing but to be left alone. Olivia's reaction confused everyone. It was as if she was alive yet dead. Her eyes were blank with no emotions.

When Ella tried to hug her, she even flinched. It was heartbreaking to see her like this.

The next day, James went to meet Olivia in the hospital. Instead of a happy squeal, she got a panic attack which caused her to faint.

After two days, Olivia was discharged. She was given strict instructions to visit a psychologist to deal with her problem. But unfortunately, she was not reacting to anything in this world.

To make it easier, David asked Naomi, her psychologist, to come home and treat her. But Olivia did nothing but sit there, looking blank. She didn't even utter a single word.

Olivia's first week at the Knight's house was not a success. She hardly consumed any food and avoided contact with everyone. She didn't say a single word. It was as if she had turned herself mute.

It was one week later when everyone heard her scream and ran to her room. Caleb was the first to reach her as his room was closer to her. Then came James, and then Ella, David, Carson, and Claudia.

Olivia was having a nightmare, and when she finally got out of it, she flinched hard from James' touch. She stood and was pushing herself hard on the wall behind to get away from him.

“Olivia, I am your brother, your twin. I am not going to hurt you.” He tried to calm her down.

“You are not real. You are going to disappear and leave me alone.” Olivia said it in the softest voice ever.

“Livy, I am not going anywhere.” He tried to touch her again, but Olivia ran quickly towards Caleb's side and clutched his hands.

“Caleb, please tell everyone to leave. They are scaring me. They are going to hurt me. Please.

“Olivia, baby, they are not going to hurt you. They all love you.” He grabbed both her cheeks and tried to soothe her, but she was getting frantic and out of control.

“No, you are all going to leave me. Get out. Get out.” Now she was screaming and shouting, and David had no other option but to inject her to calm her down, which caused her to drift off into a dreamless slumber.

Olivia's reaction astounded James, and he left the Knight's home. He went to a nearby park and called the first person who came to his mind.

Stella was there with him in a jiffy to find James sitting on the bench, with tears falling freely from his eyes. It didn't take James even a minute to hug Stella and cry on her shoulders.

The next day was almost the same as before, but Olivia was going deeper into the black hole that she had formed for herself.

It was until that night when they found a ray of hope. Olivia had her nightmare like usual, but they didn’t need to inject her, unlike last time.

When Ella and David rushed to her room, they found Caleb hugging her tightly. She was hitting his chest repetitively, but she got tired and started sobbing in his shirt at some point in time. It was after a few minutes when she calmed down and drifted off to sleep with Caleb.

Ella went inside to sit beside her god-daughter but was stopped by David. He signalled her to come with him downstairs.

“David, what should we do?” Ella asked him. She was helpless.

Her husband came beside her to sit on the sofa. “Olivia doesn’t need a doctor to treat her, but she needs us. Most of all, she needs Caleb.

“I just don’t understand.

“Ella, Caleb was the only one who never treated Olivia like she was a fragile China doll. He had always been himself with her. That’s the reason why Olivia clung to Caleb when we tried to calm her down by touching her. She requires reassurance at this time.

“So, we need to take baby steps with her?” Ella asked her husband.

“Yes, first thing in the morning, we will talk with Caleb. It is a good thing that we have asked John to let James stay with him, and Stella is also there, so he will be fine. Whereas Olivia is concerned, we will first reassure her that things are returning to normal, and then we will ask James to approach her. David explained it to her.

“James and Olivia will be fine, right?” Ella asked her husband in apprehension.

“Yes, they will be. They have to be.” David squeezed her shoulder.

“You know, our son finally grew up.” Ella gave a happy sigh.

“Ya, maybe you and Kelly were right all along about Caleb and Olivia ending up together. It’s just a matter of time.

“I can’t wait to have a mini Olivia and Caleb.” Ella’s words made David laugh.

“Our kids’ lives will be back to normal. I promise you.” David kissed his wife.

He not only made this promise to his wife but also to his best friends.
