Chapter 27

Ella and David were delighted to learn that Caleb had finally decided to speak with Carson. Following Olivia's outburst, both of them attempted to contact their elder son. But it was a waste of time because Carson was firm in his decision to discontinue all contact with his family. Fortunately, they were able to locate his fiancée, Claudia. He spoke with her and learned about his son's whereabouts.

Olivia didn't want to ruin the Knights' family's happiness by bringing Cameron. It was their time, not hers, but she was out of luck when Caleb signalled her to speak with his parents about Cameron. So, Olivia had no choice but to tell them about her secret.

Ella and David were both surprised to learn Olivia had a younger brother. They wanted to know about him, and she gladly informed them about her younger brother. Of course, Olivia left out the part about her parents abusing her, but she did tell them about Cameron being exposed to the wrong influences in his life and her parents being too preoccupied with their new life to notice their youngest son. Caleb’s parents couldn’t believe their late best friend would do something like that. Those two were the kindest people they’d ever met. They both thought it was strange that they would do something so careless.

Olivia’s parents, Matt and Kelly, loved their children. When they first learned of their deaths, they found it difficult to believe that they had died because of a drug overdose. They’d never been involved in anything like that before. They supported Olivia while keeping their thoughts to themselves, but not before demanding to meet their godson. David had known Madison through her pregnancy and was relieved that Cameron was in good hands.

After a long day, they both agreed to meet Carson the next day.

The next day, they were both sitting in Caleb’s car. It took four hours to get there.

“Who would have guessed that three months after meeting, we’d be travelling together to meet my brother?” Caleb wondered.

“Not me, at any rate.” Olivia chuckled.

“Do you mind if I ask you a question?” He asked her nervously.

“Sure.” She said, shrugging.

“What will happen to Cameron once you leave here? Isn’t he going to be heartbroken because his sister abandoned him?

“He has no idea I am his sister.” She gave him a sad smile.

“Wh.. what! Why?

“It’s better that way. He’s a kid, and he doesn’t need to know about his broken family history. He is with Aaron and Madison, both of whom absolutely love him. And he will eventually forget me or remember me as a girl who used to play with him.

“So, how about you? How will you live without him, and doesn’t he have the right to know the truth?” He questioned her.

“Sometimes memories are all that is required for survival. And as for the truth, when Camy reaches the appropriate age, Aaron and Madison will tell him, or I will tell him when I am sick of living without him.

“Where will you go through, to your folks or...

“Caleb, I honestly don’t know, but probably somewhere far away from here. I have too many memories here, and it can get a little suffocating at times. So maybe I will go somewhere where I don’t know anyone, but I will figure something out.

Caleb knew that was the end of his discussion on this subject.

At the moment, he was nervous about meeting his brother, which didn’t go unnoticed by Olivia. “Caleb, you will be fine; just take a deep breath and ring the bell. Everything will go smoothly.” To which he nodded. He took a deep breath and rang the bell.

Carson himself opens the door after a few seconds. He was taken aback to see his brother with Olivia.

“What are you doing here, Caleb... Olivia?” Carson asked him.

“Do you mind if we come in?” He asked his older brother nervously.

“Yes, of course.

“Carson, you better clean the mess, or I will hit you with the mop.

From behind, a girl yelled at Carson. She approached him with a mop in her hand and was about to hit him when she noticed the two kids in front of her.

“Oh, you might be Caleb, and you might be Olivia. Please accept my apologies for my tardiness. My fiancé, you see, is a total mess.” Claudia stabbed Carson in the stomach.

“You must be Claudia; you look even more beautiful than in the photo.” Olivia complimented her on her appearance.

“Thank you very much, darling. You two are welcome to come in. Olivia, how about we go inside and have some girl talk while these two brothers talk?

Olivia found Claudia easing going. She was easy to get along with. But their conversation was cut short when Knight's brother entered the room.

“You both have some explaining to do,” Carson said.

“Olivia, I told you not to tell anyone about what I said to you, not because I am not grateful, which I really am. And Claudia, you should have told me about my parents trying to get in touch with me.

“Carson, I indirectly tried to tell you to talk to them, but it was of no use. Yes, Ella and David contacted me about you; I wasn't snitching on you but simply gave you some alone time. And I had no idea Caleb and Olivia were going to show up today. I knew they'd do it one day, but not today.” She elaborated.

“You should have told me, Claudia. We agreed not to keep anything from each other.

“Do you mean to tell me I lied to you?” She questioned, with her hand on her hips.

“Girls and their ability to twist words.” He muttered.

“What did you say?” She asked him curiously.

“I love you.” He began hesitantly.

“Good.

“Anyway, so both of you will stay here today?” Carson asked them.

“Of course, they are going to stay here.” Claudia rolled her eyes, not allowing either of them to respond. Throughout the day, the four of them spent time catching up with Caleb and Carson.

The day flew by, and it was the night before we knew it.

“So, Caleb and Olivia, you can both share the room. Caleb, Carson’s clothes will fit you, and Olivia, feel free to borrow mine.” Claudia informed them.

After getting ready for bedtime, both of them were left alone in their bedroom.

Olivia was anxious. She wasn’t expecting to spend the night here.

“Don’t worry, Olivia. I can take the floor.” Caleb said, clearly aware of her nervousness.

“No, no, no. It’s fine if we share a bed. It’s big enough for both of us to sleep in.” She said with a tight smile on her face.

“Are you sure?” He asked.

“Of course.

Caleb sat on one edge of the bed while Olivia sat on the other.

“By the way, Olivia, thank you for coming with me here. It’s good to see my brother again.” He said.

“There is no need to thank me.” She told him. Nevertheless, she was glad that finally the bridge between the brothers was mended.

“Still.

While Olivia was wide awake, Caleb turned his back on her and fell asleep. She couldn’t sleep because she couldn’t afford it. Also, none of them was aware of her sleeping habits. Olivia tried to stay awake, but she fell asleep in any case.

Olivia was sprinting down the middle of the road, trying to catch someone. She was running as fast as she could to keep a certain someone at bay. It was dark, and there were no vehicles on the road. Only the street lamps were turned on. She finally found the shadow after a few minutes of running. She dashed towards it and grabbed the person’s hand, unable to let him go. She hugged him, but he slowly moved away from her. With a sad smile on his face, he let go of her hand. Once her hand was let go by him, the scenery change. It was him and her, but they were on the bridge. She yelled for him to return, but he walked backward when a vehicle appeared out of nowhere and hit him, causing him to fall off the bridge into the water. Olivia dashed to the edge and was about to jump herself when she felt someone holding her back. She yelled again and again, but the person would not let her go.

She felt someone shaking and jumped up on her bed, but not before shouting ‘James’ loudly.

Caleb was completely terrified when he heard Olivia scream. He reached her, along with Carson and Claudia, to ask about the screams. All three of them attempted to wake Olivia, but it was pointless. She was trembling violently and murmuring James. Caleb ran to her side as soon as she woke up from her nightmare.

Olivia was drenched in sweat and panting profusely. She didn’t know who it was, but someone forced her to drink water.

She noticed Caleb, Claudia, and Carson’s concerned expressions after she had calmed down.

“I apologize for waking you up.” She told them, feeling guilty and embarrassed, that three of them had to witness this scene.

“Olivia, of course not. Are you all right?” Claudia asked.

“Yes, it was just a nightmare.” She stated, trying to sound casual.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Carson asked her carefully.

In response, Olivia simply shook her head.

“Do you want sleeping pills, Olivia?” Claudia asked.

“If it's all right with you.” She told her, a little nervously.

“I will go get it for you.

Olivia took the pills and went to bed.

Carson and Claudia both knew it was a bad idea to press the issue. Both of them, as medical students, knew that her nightmares were not coincidental, and the name James was sufficient confirmation.

On the other hand, Caleb was still reeling from the trauma of Olivia trembling in her sleep and the mystery of James, about whom she kept murmuring. It's understandable if she has nightmares about her parents hitting her, but what does James have to do with her? Perhaps he was overthinking things. He wasn't a medical student, but he was wise enough to recognize that this was not a one-time occurrence. His suspicions will be confirmed only when he searches Olivia's room for sleeping pills.

Caleb wanted to do nothing but comfort Olivia right now. She really was a fragile girl with a tough exterior. He was so wrong about her. He continued to accuse her, blame her, and make her life miserable. But what did Olivia do in response? She completed his family. Caleb would have lost his brother forever if it hadn't been for Olivia. He wanted to help Olivia in any way he could. And he will make certain that he does help her. He might not take her out of her nightmares, but he could at least be there to support her as a friend.

Olivia's nightmares were the primary reason she tried to stay awake. She has refused to accept that James is dead because his body has not been found since he left. Since then, she has been having this nightmare. It stopped for some time, but after a while, when her parents decided to survive on drugs, she began to get them again.

She was glad that none of them pressed her on, telling them about her nightmare. But she had a feeling Carson knew what was going on. He did, after all, know James and how close Olivia and James were.
