Chapter 2

Thanks to our driver, we arrived to work on time. We said our goodbyes to each other since I wasn’t planning to go out for lunch.

“I’ll pick you up after work,” Chloe said to me before heading out of the elevator.

I knew well that the only reason why she was planning to come for me – was Nate Donovan. He will be on my floor in the evening because of our meeting. I didn’t have the energy to argue with her, so I only nodded.

The day flew in a blur, and it was time for our planning meeting. I collected my MacBook and turned around to go to the conference room. When suddenly, I found myself bumped into the solid male chest in a white shirt.

My mind went blank, and I only inhaled a delightful aroma, actually my favorite one - The One by Dolce&Gabbana. I felt tingles down my spine and instantly shivered. Next moment two arms landed on my hips, steadying me because I stumbled a little at my stilettos. I immediately felt hot, and all I could think of was this touch.

Suddenly I came back to my senses. I was in the middle of the office. Seriously, Vera? The realization hit me. Fuck, I need to get laid. This dry spell lasted about four months, and it needs to end as soon as possible. That was the reason for my abnormal reaction; I am sure of it. Must be it.

Reluctantly I made a step back and looked up to see who was standing in front of me. Holy crap! My eyes locked with green eyes of Nate Donovan, gorgeous eyes actually. Fuck, Vera, snap back out of it! You already knew that he’s handsome and now definitely not the time or the place for these kinds of thoughts. I needed to say something and fast, but I just stood there, my mouth shut.

Next, I saw a mischievous grin forming on his lips. God, this man has a lovely mouth with a little fuller bottom lip. Shit! I stared at his lips, and he saw it. His smile became wider then he cleared his throat.

“Ahem, I believe we have a meeting to attend to. Right, Miss Davis?

He smiled again and gestured to me with his hand to go forward. I did as he said. I walked to the conference room, while my thoughts were circling like a tornado inside my head. What the fuck just happened? I was mesmerized by his face, and I’m fully aware now he knew that. And his hands on my hips? He could steady me with my upper arms. Why did he do it like that?

Thank God, I will go to the bar tonight, maybe I could find myself a hot guy for a good and steamy one-night stand? Usually, I’m not a fan of hookups, but I obviously need sex, and now I realized just how much.

I walked to the conference room, Nate’s just a few steps behind. Mrs. Myers hadn’t seen him at first and started with annoyance speaking to me:

“Oh, you finally made it, Miss Davis?

“She’s late because of me, Amanda. And I think we should begin.” Nate said as he followed in the room and stood beside me with an infectious smile on his face. I smiled back at him with gratitude and went to sit at the table.

As the meeting started, I found myself thinking not about the charity event. I recalled my encounter with Nate and my flushed reaction to it. Well, I am confused. I am not blind and saw it before that this guy is handsome. He had chiseled cheekbones with a little stubble, his hair is hazelnut color, and as I noticed today, his eyes are green with long lashes. If I needed to define his mouth in one word, it’d be – kissable. Crap, I’m in trouble! I glanced at him, and my eyes roamed around his body. Nate Donovan was definitely in great shape with six-packed abs and toned arms. As I looked back at his face, my cheeks went red – he was smiling at me because he saw exactly what I was doing. He caught me checking him out! Busted!

I immediately looked away and tried to focus on the meeting. Seriously, what was wrong with me? I know better than anyone; nothing good comes from this “type” of guy. For a girl like me, it’s impossible to be attracted to rich and handsome men, because it’ll only break my heart. Memories of my final year at high school and even of my sophomore year in college filled all my thoughts. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath, and as I exhaled, I shut my mind for these thoughts. I refused to remember that asshole Tyler, who broke my heart not once and even not twice.

“Vera, maybe you could tell us about decorations? Is everything okay with it?

I heard my name, and thankfully Amanda’s voice snapped me back from this freaking bubble of thoughts, where I was for the last 15 minutes.

“Yeah, of course, I’ll do it.

For the rest of the meeting, I stayed a hundred percent focus on event planning. We had a few details that needed to be fixed until the meeting next week since it’ll be our last before the charity event we all received tasks to do.

“Thank you all for today! Looking forward to the next week! All of you did an excellent job, you know it?” Nate said, finishing our meeting.

I looked at the time and realized that my work’s day was already over. My colleagues walked out of the room, discussing their plans for the weekend. I grabbed my things and made my way to the exit when I heard Nate’s voice.

“Well, I am impressed, Miss Davis. You’ve done an outstanding job with all this decoration planning.

“Why, thank you, Mr. Donovan. I am glad to hear it. But please wait with this flattery till the end of the charity event.

Heck! Flattery? Why not say “Thank you” and leave the room with some dignity?

“Oh, believe me, Vera. I’ll wait. I’ll make sure to tell you more compliments when the event will end.” Nate winked at me.

What is happening right now? Had been Nate Donovan flirting with me? Because yeah, it’s obvious. And why am I enjoying it? It’s not me who likes him; it’s Chloe. Still, we stood there, smiling at each other. Am I feeling the anticipation of what could happen? Hell no, I won’t do it! I shouldn’t even think about him in this way!

“Vera, why are you still there? Did you forget that we’re going out tonight?” I heard Chloe’s voice before I saw her entering the conference room.
