Chapter 7

Jamie was sure that by the end of the day, he will develop a mannerism as he sent another suspicious look at his boss for the hundredth time. The head marketer was acting very peculiar since their parting with Mr. Michaels.

“Sir, I think the luncheon is that way,” he told his boss as the man steered them in a different direction suddenly. James lost count to how many times this had happened that morning. Mr. Humble earlier almost shoved him in another hallway because he thought there might be a bulletin where they can post their ads. Jamie furrowed his eyebrows since they were clearly in the corridor leading to the hotel rooms, which they passed by frequently. His boss also refused to let him grab a program from the reception table, only to ask for one from the staff when they were seated.

“I know. I just- uh…” Mr. Humble started as they stopped by a huge glass window that gave them a great view of the nearby lake. Jamie looked at his boss, eyes narrowing as he waited for his excuse this time. But Eric Humble had luck on his side, almost sighing in relief when Jamie’s phone started ringing.

The assistant looked at the caller ID then back at his boss, “Excuse me, sir. I got to take this.

Eric nodded at once, thanking the caller in his head for getting him out of the awkward situation. He was running out of excuses. But his smile fell at once when he heard Jamie greeted who was at the other end of the line. “Yes, Mark. I missed you too.” His forehead scrunched up as he watched his assistant walk away, giggling.

James laughed at his roommate’s panicked curses through the receiver. “Relax there, bud. I can’t understand you with all the yelling.

“I said,” Mark huffed, “I am going to ask Mitch to marry me tonight.

“You bastard. You promised I could help in the planning,” Jamie whined, unconsciously stomping his foot. “How come you suddenly got the guts when I am away?

“We were on the bed this -”

“Eww. I don’t want to hear about you banging!

“Lemme finish. It’s not about that!” Mark yelled before continuing. “ As I was saying, when I woke up beside her today, I just knew. The ring had been in my drawer for months but, looking at her this morning, I thought there was no other person I want to wake up to for the rest of my life.

James smiled, hearing how in love his best friend was. He could not help but wonder when he will meet the person for him. Sure, he may have feelings for a certain someone now, but he knew there was no way it could be something more. “Mitch changed you from a dweeb to a sappy whipped dweeb, huh? But you still promised me.

“That’s why I was calling. Help me choose what to wear, please. I reserved a table at that restaurant you recommended last month.

Eric Humble only watched his assistant as he smiled, pouted and stomped his feet cutely. Oh, how he wished to be the one to make him laugh like that. He did not know whether to be thankful for seeing these expressions or sad for not being the cause of it. “I see, so this is how whipped you are.

Eric turned to find his least favorite person standing behind him. Anthony just smiled at him. “Do think you can successfully keep him away from me for three days, Mr. Humble?
