Chapter 3

Jamie had been without rest these past few days. Mr. Humble and he were preparing all the essential documents they need to take on their trip as the days drew near. On top of that, his suitcase was not yet packed. Being tired from working all day had him crashing to his bed the moment he enters the bedroom.

“Here you go, busy bee.

He jumped out of his seat when a lunchbox appeared on top of the papers he was working on. Jamie looked up to see his roommate looking proud, with a wide grin on his face.

“You’re so occupied these days, you didn’t notice I cooked for us today.

At that moment, his stomach made a sound of agreement. “Thanks, Marky. You are a lifesaver, really.” James cleared his desk and let Mark sit with him.

“Where’s your boss? I’m surprised there’s no food delivery.

“Mr. Humble has a lunch meeting,” Jamie replied, before taking a bite. “Now that is one awesome lunch. Your girlfriend is so lucky.

Mark puffed his chest at the compliment before suddenly remembering something. “Speaking of which, I ask Michelle about how to seduce and whatnot.

Jamie sputtered on his food, hearing the words. “You did what now?

“It’s a good thing you didn’t pack yet. Mitch said lingeries work wonders,” Mark continued to blabber, completely ignoring the disbelief on his best friend’s face. “I’ll go shopping with you later and help you choose. Red will look good on you, probably. Oh, lace too.

Jamie opened his mouth to scold him but stopped as a frowning Mr. Humble walked past them and straight to his office. “I never saw him look so mad before. I should go,” Mark said, as he packed up his lunch. “Good luck.

With that, James was left alone on his desk with a half-eaten lunch and a frown on his face. Did the meeting go south? Did he forget to hand him the proposal? Was he angry at him?

Before his thoughts overpower him, Jamie stood up and quickly made his way to the break room. He ignored the lunch hour chatters and proceeded to the coffeemaker. He fought with himself not to bite his nails as he stopped in front of the wooden door. Mr. Humble had once told him that coffee always makes him feel better. Jamie took a deep breath, hopeful that his tactic will work, before knocking.

He heard a curt ‘come in’ from the inside. When he opened the door, he found the ever polished Eric Humble slumped in his office chair with a frown on his face, staring angrily at some paper works. “I brought you your afternoon coffee, sir.

Eric looked up to see his assistant shakily place the mug on his desk. He took advantage of the moment to scan his facial features, his rosy cheeks, and long lashes, and feels himself calm down. “Thank you, Jamie.

His assistant flashed him a smile, “You’re welcome, sir. Is there anything else you need?

Eric nodded towards the paper bag at the side of the table. “Take it. I got some food for you, actually. But you seemed to have eaten already,” he explained, trying so hard not to sound bitter at the statement.

Jamie could only gawk at the marketing head in surprise. Mr. Humble actually got him lunch. It took a few moments for him to process the information before he said his thanks, grabbed the bag, and head back to his table.

James Carter could not help the silly smile that spread on his face as he continued to eat his lunch.
