Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - Angel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hi! I'm Amy Sykes, nice to meet you!" She exclaimed brightly, excitement glistening in her eyes.
Great... She's one of those types of people who you can't find yourself to hate. Her last name sounded familiar, but it was probably because her family owned some large corporation.
"Uh, Hi..."I said uncertainly. "Can you excuse us for a second?" I asked, taking Seth's hand and jerked my chin in the direction of the fountain in their front yard.
"Sure!"
"Thanks," I said quickly before dragging Seth off.
"Why'd you bring me here? What type of date is this? You have a fiancee!" I said everything at once, which made my words jumble all together, but Seth seemed to understand just fine.
"Jealous?" He smirked mischievously.
I smacked his arm, not answering. He took a sharp intake of breath, I must have hit him harder than I thought. I smiled inwardly at this.
"Okay first, I told you we were going out, I never said it was a date. Besides, you blew me off the first time." He scowled at me. "Second, that's why I brought you here!"
"Uh... I'm confused." I crossed my arms.
"Well, my parents never pressured me into anything before, but at the start of the school year they suddenly tell me that I'm engaged to some girl." Seth glanced at Amy, then his eyes met mine, piercing into me.
"Continue..." I said slowly, waiting for him to answer.
He took a long breath before talking again.
"Help me break off the engagement." He blurted out and looked away. "I rather not get stuck with that girl..." He added under his breath, thinking I couldn't hear him, but I did.
I chewed on my lower lip, thinking. Well... He is blackmailing me after all, so if I did this for him, maybe then he'd leave me be. I made up my mind.
"Alright," I said.
Seth
"Alright." She replied, smiling at me.
"Really?" I asked surprised, but it quickly turned into suspicion, then back to a blank expression.
"Yeah, because of..." She began, then lowered her voice. "the secret."
"Oh, right." I felt kind of annoyed that she was only doing it because she was blackmailed too, but I tried not to show it. "We have a family dinner this afternoon, Amy will be there..."
I played with my hands nervously behind my back. What if she already had plans? What will I do then? I looked back up at her, she was looking up at something behind me, I've come to know that was her thinking face. I mentally chuckled at that.
"Okay." She agreed after a while. "So why am I here again?" Angel raised a brow, looking at me expectantly.
"Well... So you'll know what to expect when you come. You'll get a tour of the house and I also got you a dress for tonight." I said, walking back towards a beaming Amy and shuddered at the sight.
I didn't hate her, but I wasn't too fond of her either.
"How did you know I'd agree? Overconfident much?" She said, smirking.
"Always, besides no girl can resist getting a chance to help me." I waved dismissively.
Her expression faltered a bit and I smirked, making her scowl. Amy followed us into the house, one of the maids took care of her for me, bringing her to the kitchen to get a snack. I lead Angel into the dining room. Her expression was priceless, eyes wide open and mouth hanging in a big "O" shape, it was cute. Wait, what? No, I shouldn't be thinking about this.
"This isn't a dining room, it's a freaking banquet hall!" She yelled, her voice echoing around the room, while she walked around, looking at all the paintings and such on the wall.
"The one at our summer house's bigger." I shrugged.
"Spoiled brat." I heard her mutter as she stomped out of the room.
The edges of my mouth quirked as I followed her out. The rest of the tour wasn't all that interesting, well actually, calling it interesting was an understatement, Angel's expressions were very entertaining. I stopped in front of my room and knocked twice. A maid appeared out of it, having recently cleaned my room, with the dress. I held it out the Angel and urged her into the bathroom. She scowled at me and took the dress in its black jacket and hanger into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her. I changed into my suit before she came out. My eyes widened when she did.
I stepped into the bathroom and gasped. There was a jacuzzi in here! I resisted the urge to turn on the water and jump right in, I turned around and unzipped the jacket covering the dress.
"Wow..." I stared at the dress in awe.
It was white, plain, simple, and elegant. I pulled it on, it felt as like as a feather and looked into the ground to ceiling mirror. It had thin straps that hung perfectly at my shoulders, the dress itself ended just above my knees, the silky fabric brushed lightly against my skin, making me shiver slightly. I opened the door of the bathroom and stepped out shyly. Seth looked at me with a dumbfounded expression, his eyes as wide as a saucer. I had to stifle a giggle. He seemed to snap out of it and cleared his throat, looking away.
"You look... nice." He said and... is that a blush I see? But it was gone as soon as it came, his expression neutral again.
I shook it off and gave him a once over to realize he was wearing a suit. Plain black, like any regular suit, but he made it look so much better.
"You too." I nodded at him.
"The guests should be arriving soon. We should get going." Seth got up and headed for the door.
I followed him out and down the hall towards the dining room again, confused at the sudden change in subject. We stopped in front of the elegant white doors, I can already hear chattering and the loud clink of glasses on the other side.
"By family dinner, do you mean..." I trailed off, glancing at Seth.
"The whole family, relatives included." He said, trying not to look tense, but his clenched fist and jaw told me otherwise.
"Right then..." I breathed out as Seth reached out a hand and pulled the door open, gesturing for me to go in first.
I smiled before shyly entering. Oh no... I looked around. The large empty room that it was once before was now filled with about fifty or so people, laughing, talking, and waiting to be served. I looked to my right to see Amy in a red low cut dress, sauntering in our directions. When our eyes met, she waved at me enthusiastically and shot Seth a gazillion watt smile. I heard him swear beside me. I elbowed him and plastered on a big smile.
"Angel! Seth! I've been looking all over for you guys! Mom wants to see you." She nodded in the direction of a woman in her late forties, wearing a black dress with a round neckline and as if on cue, her head shot up and she spotted us, waving her hand for us to come over.
I wiped my hands on the dress unconsciously as Seth took hold of my hand and tugged me over. I felt a few cameras flashes directed at us and gulped. I stumbled a few times on the flashy silver heels that went with the dress. I sat down next to Seth who sat next to who I assumed was his mother.
"This is Angel." He introduced me right away, smiling genuinely at his mother, a smile that I've never seen before.
I smiled at the woman.
"I'm Seth's mother, Mrs. Jaspers, but you can call me Linda." She beamed at me, smiling warmly.
Seth and I switched seats and I talked to his mother for a while. She was really nice and the kind who was still a teen at heart. I smiled at her expression when I told her stories of my own family after she told me a bunch of hilarious stories about Seth, we talked in low voices so he wouldn't hear.
"Hey man!" I heard someone say behind me and I turned to see Brian clapping Seth in the back, smiling broadly. "Where were you yesterday?"
Seth was struggling with an answer when Brian's attention shifted to me.
"Ms. McClain?" He stared at me clearly confused.
"Ms. McClain?" I heard Seth's mom say the same behind me.
This isn't good. I gave Seth a panicked expression, he gritted his teeth, looking at Brian. He got up abruptly and ushered him out the door, whispering at a rapid pace into his ear. They disappeared out of the double doors and I turned back to Linda. She raised a perfectly drawn brow at me.
"I-Uh, he likes to call me that to annoy me." I lied.
Worst. Lie. Ever. It didn't even sound convincing to me.
"Oh, well that's interesting." She said before going back to her food.
I sighed in relief quietly and began shoving down the food and trying to not look like a pig while doing it. I heard the click of a door opening than closing and my head snapped in that direction. I rubbed at the pain in my neck. Seth came in, the expression on his face was unreadable.
"Excuse me, I'm going to borrow Angel for a second." He whispered to his mom.
She nodded and he took hold of my arm, pulling me to my feet. We left the room and down the hall, he opened the front door and I walked through it. Seth wasn't looking at me. I looked at the distance and saw Brian standing by the fountain. He looked up and saw us, he locked gazes with me and a mischievous smile appeared on his face. His eyes were shining with a creepy glint. He walked back over to us, bending down to whisper into my ear as he made his way back to the dining room.
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone." His breath sent shivers down my spine.
What he said didn't make sense, did he know my secret? He smiled, then walked towards the gates. I froze and looked at Seth, he noticed and opened his mouth to speak.
"I had to tell him." He said slowly, then became quiet.
He looked at me a second after with a confused expression, that's when I realized I was supposed to answer.
"Yof wratph?" I said, food spilling out of my mouth.
I turned red in embarrassment. I forgot that I didn't swallow the food I'd been shoving in properly when he dragged me out. To my surprise, he burst laughing, a genuine one. I scowled and swallowed the chewed up fillet in my mouth.
"Why did you tell him?!" I looked at him disbelievingly.
"Well if I didn't then he would've found out you were just pretending to be a teacher." He said calmly.
"Wait what are you talking about?" I frowned.
"I was talking about you helping me getting out of the engagement, what are you talking about?" He mimicked my expression.
"I thought you meant me being sixteen and covering for my sister."
"What? Why? I promised not to tell, right?"
"I-" I began, but cut myself off. "Never mind, then it's no big deal as long as he doesn't tell anyone.
"You really are something else, you know that?" He gave a smile small that was instantly wiped off this face.
This frustrated me.
"What is that suppose to mean?" I snapped, my tone was harsher than I meant it to be.
"Nothing." He shook his head and sighed. "Let's get you home."
"What about the plan?" I mumbled, suddenly feeling really tired.
"We'll do it another time." He shrugged.
I nodded in agreement as I walked down his steps, he followed me. He still had the keys to my car, so he drove. We got to my house very quickly, it felt like almost no time at all. I was about to get off the car when I remembered something. My hand shot out before I could stop myself and placed itself on Seth's forehead, sweeping his bangs from his eyes. He seemed to be shocked but didn't move away like last time.
"Your fever's gone," I stated, before realizing my hand was still there and jerked it away.
I flushed. I held out my hand and glanced in his direction. He just stared at me, making me scowl, a minute after, he frowned.
"What?" He asked.
"Um... My keys?" I shoved my hand in his face his time.
He laughed and dropped the keys into my hand. I opened the door and began to step out, but he grabbed my hand. I looked back at him. His eyes pierced mine and I saw something in them, but they were gone just as they came and he dropped my hand and also got out. There was a honk, I turned to see that his chauffeur was parked across the street, he must have been tailing us when we left. He left without another word and I climbed up the steps to my house without looking back.
