Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - Angel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My mouth hung open as I stared blankly at the doorway. A million questions ran across my mind. Why was he still there? Did he hear everything I said on the phone? Is my secret exposed? What did he mean by what he said? Christine is going to be in so much trouble if he tells someone about it! The last thought snapped me back to reality. I looked down at my timetable, it said I didn't have a class this period. I stood up quickly, making the chair spin on its movable base, and sprinted towards the doorway. He couldn't have gone that far yet... could he?
I scanned the hallway for that head of black hair, but he was nowhere to be found. The students walking down the hall to their next class looked at me as if I'd lost it. Was I spaced out for longer than I thought? I groaned and skulked back into the classroom, I promised myself to catch him at lunch and if not, then tomorrow.
A bell rang, signaling lunch. I didn't even notice that I'd sat in the classroom, wracking my brain for an excuse to get me out of this mess, for so long. I sighed, heading for the cafeteria. I could have eaten at the teacher's lounge, but what was the fun in that? Plus, I needed to find out the guy's name, then send some random student to give him a note, telling him to come to my classroom to confront him about the phone call. Right, I was going to go with that plan. If all fails, I could always get down on my knees and beg... or not... I have too much pride to do that, especially to a guy like him!
I walked into the cafeteria and looked around, walking towards the lunch line. It was already halfway through lunch, so most of the students had already bought their lunch and settled down at their tables. I looked around at the tables, and can already tell there were cliques. Every high school is the same. I sighed and asked the cafeteria lady for large fries and grabbed a can of Coke. She filled the large cardboard container with fries, squirting a generous amount of ketchup on it before handing it to me. I smiled and thanked her, then walked over to the cashier and handed her a five-dollar bill. My eyes scanned over the cafeteria again and narrowed when I found a familiar, and very hot, shaggy black-haired head. I didn't realize I was just standing there staring until the cashier said something.
“Keep the change,” I said, waving my hand dismissively at the coins in her hand.
She shrugged and dropped them into the machine and called on the next student in line. I strolled over to a girl who was whispering to her friend nearby. She wasn't in any of my classes, so I thought it was safe to ask her.
“Hey,” I said, smiling weakly at the girl.
I wasn't much of a social butterfly, but in this situation, it really didn't matter. The girl looked over and furrowed her brows, but then smiled when she was completely turned around.
“Hi! ... Can I help you?” She asked, cocking her head to the side.
“Uh... Yeah. Do you see that guy over there?” I said, pointing in the direction of the mysterious stranger.
Her widened as she nodded eagerly. She had a dreamy look in her eye that was kind of creeping me out. I looked back in the direction of the guy who's name is still unknown. I took in a sharp intake of breath when I realized he was staring straight at me. His gaze was intense as his deep blue eyes bore into me, although my vision was quite bad, I had glasses, I was pretty sure he was looking this way. I wrenched my eyes away from his and looked back to the girl in front of me and waved a hand in her face.
“Oh right, that's Seth, Seth Jaspers.” She snapped back to reality, but back into dream island right after saying his name.
“Well, thanks,” I said, rolling my eyes, knowing that she didn't hear me.
Her friend beside her gave me an apologetic smile, which I returned with a warm one before she also went staring at him too. I walked out of the cafeteria and back to my classroom, looking at the clock to see how much time I had left before lunch ended. A good twenty minutes. I pulled out a pen from the holder on the desk and a good on one side piece of paper, no I'm not one of those overly Eco-friendly people, and scribbled a note telling “Seth” to come to speak to me. I walked back out of the classroom and saw the same curly-haired blond guy from my earlier class, I think his name was Brian.
“Brian!” I called before he could turn the corner.
He turned slightly, looking back over his shoulders with a confused look, then a wide smile appeared on his face. He. Was. Adorable. I would date him, but I don't date, I had a lot of issues with trust. I felt myself smile unconsciously as he jogged to where I was.
“Ms. McClain.” He nodded at me, smiling wider.
“Um... I was wondering if you could do me a favour?” I asked slowly, chewing on my lower lip, hoping he wouldn't say no.
“Sure, what is it?” He beamed.
I smiled.
“Hand this note to... Seth? I need to speak to him.” I said, handing him the note.
“In trouble already, huh?” He shook his head and chuckled.
“Something like that,” I said, chuckling nervously.
I said good-bye as he turned and waved before heading in the direction of the lunchroom. I strolled back into the classroom and sat down, sighing deeply. I played my fingers and waited. After about five minutes or so there was a knock on my door. My head snapped up instantly, my brain wasn't fast enough to catch up with the quick movement and made me feel a little dizzy, black spots dotted my vision. I closed my eyes and shook it off and heard a chuckling coming from the doorway. I looked up to see Seth, he was walking slowly over to me with that same smirk on his face, it annoyed me a lot. I frowned as he got closer, stopping right in front of my desk.
“What did you want to see me about?” He asked with a raised brow, leaning so that he was at the same eye level as me.
I gulped, I didn't feel comfortable when people were this close to me, not even my own mother. I also have personal space issues. I placed a hand on his lean chest, feeling the heat steeping through his t-shirt, warming my fingertips and sending tiny sparks down my body. I ignored it and gave a tiny push and he straightens back to my relief. I exhaled a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
“You heard my conversation? The one on the phone?” I said quietly, closing my eyes, hoping he'd prove me wrong and that he heard nothing.
“What conversation are you talking about?” He asked, confused.
I felt like a whole weight has been lifted off my shoulders and opened my eyes to see him smirking, and all of it came crashing down again. My mouth opened slightly.
“Of course I heard it, you are way too gullible.” He said, chuckling and shaking his head.
I felt anger bubble up inside of me and an overwhelming urge to slap him silly but tried to calm down since I didn't want him getting angry and telling my secret.
“Please don't tell anyone...” I said quietly, giving him a puppy dog face.
He faltered, but composed himself quickly and slapped on a smile. I smirked inwardly though, knowing that I had a little victory.
“Glad to... But there's one condition.” He said slowly, smiling mischievously.
“A condition?” I grimaced.
He nodded.
“Straight A's in English.” He shrugged.
“No!” I snapped, earning another annoying laugh from him.
“I'm kidding, I got straight A's in this course last year anyways.” He smirked.
I narrowed my eyes at him. I didn't believe him one bit, someone like him, getting straight A's? I snorted inwardly.
“You don't believe me,” Seth said, more as a statement than a question.
I rolled my eyes at him as if saying, duh!
“I'll prove it during the year.” He said, shrugging again, that movement was really pissing me off.
You know how there's always that one person, who, no matter what they do it just annoys the heck out of you? Yeah, he's that one person, well, there was Aaron too for the whole running again, messed up mafia thing. I really hoped it wasn't true because if it were I'd probably be giving my sister an ear full when she gets back and finally divorced his stupid butt.
“Now the condition...” He began with an evil glint in his eyes.
There was another knock on the door. My eyes shifted towards the direction of the noise.
“The secretary wanted me to...” The girl said, trailing off, her eyes widening and a hug grin spreading on her face from ear to ear.
I gasped.
“Angel!” She exclaimed excitedly, walking over quickly.
“Jessie?!” I exclaimed, my voice just as excited as her's.
“What are you doing here?!” She asked. “Don't you have school? Or did you move here?” She raised a brow, knowing that that was highly unlikely.
“I'm a teacher here,” I said slowly.
“A teacher?” She raised a brow, clearly confused.
“I'll explain it to you later.
“No, explain now.” She crossed her arms over her chest, she was always like that, and so was I, sometimes I wished we weren't so alike.
I sighed.
“Alright.” I waved for her to follow me out of the room.
She didn't even notice Seth standing there, but it's good she didn't because she’d probably freak out at how hot he was. Just before I left the room with my old best friend. Seth looked at me and mouthed something. I didn't catch the beginning of it but heard him whisper the end as Jessie dragged me out of the room.
“... a date with me,” he mouthed, smirking.
