“Grrgh,” groaned the inspector, hearing the end call tone. Seung Woo turned to face the doctor who was not there anymore.

The man faced the lady making the degustation sausages, “where did she go?”

“Your wife ran that way,” the woman said and pointed to fruit aisles.

Seung Woo began to walk away and came back on his steps,” eh, excuse me, but she isn’t my wife.”

“Aigoo, you should be ashamed of yourself. We say for better or worse now you see the worst, you say the woman isn’t your wife. Your behavior is a disgrace.”

Seung Woo did not wait. He ran to the fruit aisle, and he found doctor Noh surrounded by apples in which she bit and threw away.

“Doctor,” Seung Woo exclaimed.

“Sir, is this your wife?”

“Eh, he isn’t my wife. I’m an inspector and sheー.”

Seung Woo pointed in the doctor’s direction, “and she isー,” he repeated as though he waited for a cue.

“Candy.”

“She is Candy.”

The inspector lowered his hand, which he placed on his hip.

“Well, sir, whoever she is, you owe us the price of what she has eaten, and she disturbed public order.”

“Look, I’m an inspector; I’ll be taking her. Please send the bill to Yongsan police.”

“No, sir, I’m afraid you have to pay now.”

Under the insisting eyes of the manager and the customers who gathered, Seung Woo had no choice, “doctor, please stop biting apples,” he yelled desperately.

The doctor stared at him and cried, “ajeossi, you are a meanie.”

Seung Woo’s eyes bulged out of his socket at sight, unable to believe the surreal scene the doctor played before him.

The inspector paid for the apples and sausages which the lady cooked and gave to the doctor right away. Only when they got out of the supermarket, the investigator remembered where his car was.

“Listen, Candy, ajeossi has to walk back to his car. Please don’t run off, okay.”

The doctor nodded, yet Seung Woo did not trust her.

“Hold my hand.”

The doctor hesitated, but she gave her hand to Seung Woo. Once they linked, she started to swing them. From the outside, they looked like newlyweds.

As they walked, Seung Woo tried to piece the mystery together. He was right; the doctor was a patient. The pathology she suffered from was evident.

“Eh, Candy, how old are you?”

“Eight.”

A double personality.

“Oh, inspector, you made it back.”

Professor Baek stood at Nam Seon Byeongwon’s entrance steps; he made a sign for the gladiator nurses to take the doctor.

“I think you owe me some explanations.”

“I don’t owe you anything inspector; you wanted the doctor to work with you.”

“But, she is insane.”

“But she is still a doctor, follow me, inspector.”

Seung Woo did as asked and went to the doctor’s office.

“I can not speak about Dr. Noh; I’m sure she will tell you herself when she feels ready.”

“What on earth are you talking about? I hired this woman to help me solve a case, but she’s as insane as the serial killer I’m trying to catch. Perhaps she is him.”

Doctor Baek chuckled,” Noa Noh wasn’t even born when Stein debuted the murders inspector.”

“Listen, if you are not going to explain what is wrong with this woman, the deal is off. I’llー.”

“You know the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, let’s say that doctor Noh is our Jekyll, and she has more than one Mr. Hyde.

“She’s a psychopath.”

“No, inspector, she is a Doctor, Noa Noh is the host. She is a legal personality, and she is sane. Dr. Noh has undergone multiple tests under my supervision, and those of peers, including the Hare Psychopathy check-List, revised PCL-R.” [ psychopathy test created by Canadian Psychologist Robert.D Hare]

“Are you listening to yourself professor, you are declaring someone who has multiple personalities as sane.”

“I am a man of science inspector, and I assure you that the doctor Noh is a genius and the only person capable of catching your killer.”

“What about the others?”

“The alters? Some are a little more or less difficult to communicate with, but the doctor is there to keep them under control.”

“So basically, you are telling me that I can work with this woman, but she has crazy personalities which can decide to kill me at any moment, but there’s no problem.”

“Exactly.”

“I’m out of here; you are all crazy.”

The inspector walked to the door and was on the point of turning the doorknob.

“She knows inspector; the doctor knows who Stein is.”

Seung Woo turned to face professor Baek who sat down behind his desk and walked back to his bureau.

“Professor Baek, what did you just say?”

“Doctor Noh knows who Stein is.”

“Are you playing with me right now?”

“I wouldn’t dare inspector,” the professor said, lowering his spectacles.

“This is capital information. Why isn’t the police aware of this?”

The professor clutched his hands “because of the alters, not many would believe the word of a person suffering from the doctor’s pathology.”

“She must speak up.”

“She can’t.”

“Why?” yelled Seung Woo.

“I’m sure one of the alters knows, but we’ve, I’ve never been able to get it to switch.”

“So, let me do a recap. Doctor Noh is crazy, but you let her practice becauseー.”

“She does an excellent diagnosis; she’s a genius.”

“She also knows who the greatest killer of all times is, but she isn’t speaking becauseー.”

“Her memory is blocked by the alters, but I’m sure working with you will stimulate her memory.”

“How come you are sure doctor Noh knows who Stein is?”

“It’s confidential, but all I can say is if you work with her, you are sure to find him.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“Don’t believe me, believe her, and remember only a wolf can whiー.”

“Stop, I already know that one.”
