Chapter 5

TRYPANOPHOBIA: Fear of needles.

KORSAKOFF'S SYNDROME:- An amnestic disorder associated with prolonged ingestion of alcohol.

"We can't escape" I said without thinking twice. It was impossible to get out of the box and leaving the asylum would be even more impossible. "You can't get past the security. They're cameras everywhere."

"And here too?"

"Yes" I said "Red wouldn't make me leave. I'd rather stay and be their lab rat than to escape and risk dying"

"First, she bears Janet and who says we can't make it past the security?"

"Reality"

"How do you think i'm right here talking to you about escaping and the camera isn't seeing any of it?"

I thought about it for a moment. With the cameras at every corner, he had been violated almost all the rules and Red didn't barge in and fire him. He went far by giving me a doll and escaping was on a different level. I could've believed him but for all i knew, it could be one of Red's schemes.

If there's only one thing i'd learnt for the past eight years, then It's Red's determination. She would do anything to get information from me. That's what she'd been trying to do ever since i got here and Mr psychologist here got me to talk in just one day. Surely, she'd use him as a weapon against me.

"Red sent you to do this, didn't she?" I asked "She's using you to get me to do something"

"She isn't"

"Go play your games with someone else"

"Look Caeli_"

"My name is Mary or 1452 like you call it" I cut him off. "Don't call me that"

"I know you didn't kill your parents, i know you're innocent and i also know that you have no idea what you are"

"Leave me alone"

"To prove this to you" he stated and pushed some buttons in front of him. He did that for a while, placing his thumb frequently on the screen. Seconds later, i heard the door unlock.

He unlocked the door. The door that was last opened eight years ago. Shocked was an understatement, i was beyond surprised but i made sure i didn't place the expression on my face. I knew he was daring but i didn't expect him to go as far as opening the door.

If he did this to make me believe him then i had to admit, he partially succeeded. I knew there was absolutely no way Red would've told him to set me free. I had a feeling she thought i was more than i was but the actual truth was, if that door was open even wider than that, i wouldn't attempt to leave.

Escaping was a big no for me, i thought it was a dumb idea since there was nowhere to go to. Besides, people knew me better than i knew my own name. I wouldn't make it past a block till they bring me back here.

He walked towards it and widened the entrance. He stopped at the door and took a look. He made it look like he didn't see it clearly through the glass. He scanned the room till his eyes landed on me.

"I thought you loved this" he said, crouching down and picking up the doll he got earlier. "If you had just given it a look, you would've seen it was more of a favour than a joke" He said and flipped the doll over. He tore away the dress and brought out a gun.

The object was black, small and shiny. He made it look like it weighed nothing as he played with it with his fingers. I'd seen a gun before but certainly not as close as this one. "You could've escaped earlier"

"I wouldn't have"

"You still don't understand what this is all about, do you?" He asked "They can't help you anymore. You're more than their capacity. They'll slowly kill you because they think they can't help you. You're a threat to them, to this whole place, to their race. They can't afford to let you leave here alive. Trust me, they'll make up a silly story about your death when they're done with you. The stunt they pulled earlier should've made you understand that."

"Why do you want to help me? What do you want from me?"

"You're my only hope" He whispered "But you won't understand that now. All i need for you to do is to do whatever i say. No questions"

"And what's in it for me?"

"Everything. If you knew better then you wouldn't have asked that question" He paused and took off his jacket. I didn't understand what he was doing so i moved to the side a bit as he took off his tie. He continued by removing the buttons one after the other. "Look" he turned to face me.

He had birthmarks like mine. They were displayed on his arms, on his chest and at his back. His were a bit darker and bolder than mine, it almost looked like they were tattoos. They were similar to mine but i wouldn't say they were exactly the same. Apart from the colour difference, his birthmarks had glowed. Seeing his birthmarks glow a bit was quite a relief. At least, i knew i wasn't turning into something else.

His glow, unlike mine, was golden. It looked like the colour of the bright morning sun. I had to admit they were the most beautiful thing i'd seen in my life.

"We're similar" he paused "We're not like them and if they find out what you are, they'll kill you. This" he touched my birthmarks which made me flinch. His fingers felt hot against my skin. It almost felt like i was burned. "This isn't normal"

"What are we?" I asked "Aliens?"

"Far better. We're more than they are. You certainly can't stay here anymore, you need to come home"

"I don't have a home anymore"

"You do. Look here, you are the hope of my people. I know you have no idea about what is going on or the reason i'm here but believe me even if It's just for a minute. Our world is different from the world you think you belong to. You're not one of them, that's why they'll never understand what you are. Who you think were your parents weren't your actual parents, they were just your guardians. Believe it or not but if you were truly they're child then they wouldn't have locked you inside and deprived you of your childhood. I'm not saying they were evil people but think about it, the only reason your parents were so devoted to the church was because your mother was infertile and they prayed for a miracle. When they found you, they couldn't let you go. They made you theirs but you couldn't mix in because you're not one of them."

"What am i?"

"You're my qu_"

"What is going on here?!" A familiar feminine voice cut him off.

Red.

Before i knew what was going on, i heard the door shut with a loud bang. Red pressed a few buttons and the door were once again, locked. A few people marched into the room, taking a stand beside red who had enabled the speakers.

"You exceeded your jurisdiction, Mr Warren" Red said strictly. I could feel the anger and rage dripping from her words. I'd never seen her that angry. "I'm afraid that exit cannot be opened again"

Lux stood up like he wasn't just a foot away from me seconds ago. He ran to the further end and banged his fists on the door. He tried to open it but it seemed all his efforts were useless. "It was part of my class"

"I strictly warned not to open the door under any circumstance. Did you have any idea what you did? You could've killed us all"

"You told me to study her and i can't without getting her to speak"

"You could've done that from here, just like i do"

"And did that work?" He paused "Let me out of here. She'll kill me"

"I'm sorry we can't do that. This is a result of your own doings, Mr Warren. You'll have to stay in there till we find a solution and if we don't" she sighed "I'm afraid you'd have to stay there"

"Get me out of here!" He yelled repeatedly, banging his fists on the glass continuously. I didn't understand the sudden change in attitude but i didn't understand the guy himself so i just sat there and watched as he acted like he was scarred of me.

Red gave me one last glance and she took her leave. He kept yelling till the clicking of her heels could only be heard from a distance.

"Told you it's impossible"

"Sweetheart" he smirked "This is just part of the plan"
