II: Help Me

Night came and I curled up under my blanket, ready to hear the celebrations from the valley. But, as time passed, I heard nothing and wondered why? It never happened like that before, the people of Faerieland celebrated the full moon every month.

My train of thoughts was broken by the light taps and sobs knocking on my door.

The sobs were familiar. I hurriedly opened the door and my guess was right. It was Marie, crouched down, she was shivering and crying.

"Marie!" I pulled her up softly and closed the door, blocking the cool night air.

Making her sit in front of the fireplace I got her a cup of warm tea.

"Here, Marie."

She hiccuped, took the cup but left it beside her on the mat.

"Lyrah..." Eyes red-rimmed and filled with tears, she looked at me.

"Yes, sweetheart, what happened? Why are you crying?" I tucked the strands of her raven hair behind her ears and wiped away the moisture from her face.

"Please..." She hiccuped again, "Please save my brother, Lyrah, he's dying."

"What?" I was confused, I had known Marie for five years and never knew she had a brother. "What do you mean, Marie?"

"Please come with me." She stood up.

"To where?"

"To my house, you need to see my brother." She insisted.

"But me..why?" I stood up too.

"I saw it in my dream, Lyrah, that you healed my brother." She held my hands.

Dream? Dream . . .

My heart thudded inside the ribcage. What was happening?

"We don't have time for questions." Marie dragged me out of my cottage and trudged down the mountain slowly, taking me to the Faerieland.

In just minutes we crossed the gates of the castle and I was stunned. Always having seen the castle from far away.

I tried to take my hand out of Marie's grasp and question her, but her pleading eyes made me kill all my queries and follow her quietly. I had to trust her, my only friend.

Climbing up a flight of marble stairs she stopped in front of a large mahogany door. The maids bowed to Marie and opened the door for us.

Stepping inside with my breath held in anticipation I took in my surroundings. And a wave of shock ran through my body. It was the same room I saw in my dream, my eyes searched for the boy and in seconds I caught a glimpse of him. Tucked in the blanket, behind the sheer bed curtains.

There were people, and it took me no time to realize who they were. Their dresses indicating their roles as the King, Queen, The Court Lady, the housemaids.

"Marie." The King's voice was laced with anger.

"Father, I know only Lyrah can do this, so please, I beg you! For the sake of Hyram's life, please let me do this." Marie's words wavered with the heaviness of her tears.

It was all happening so fast, in seconds the room was empty, leaving me, Marie, and the boy behind.
