The Forty-second Day: 3 May 2020

The Forty-second Day:3 May 2020 (186, 599 confirmed infected, 28,446 died, in total)

"My body, my choice. No more lockdown." – Protesters outside New Scotland Yard

It is reported that, following days of protests against coronavirus lock-down in the US, some Londoners also took to the street to show their intolerance of the “stay at home” rules. They grouped and hugged to defy the rules in front of the police headquarters. Of course they were soon dispersed by the police and one man was arrested, as the rules forbid any gathering of more than three people.

What we have seen in these recent days is that more people are going out as if this pandemic is already over. Neighbours are chatting down in the garden, with children playing together; pedestrians and cars are more on the street; some of the shops are trying or preparing to reopen. It is only when dusk falls that the streets return to silence, for since the lock-down, several murder cases have taken place in London, with the nearest one happened only one mile away from where we live. How terrifying.

It seems that people’s patience is exhausting after six weeks’ lock-down (today is exactly the forty-second day). Time to have some change, be it lifting some of the restrictions, or adding some new ones, or just like the government said, “refining” some of the lock-down rules. It is obviously too radical to lift all restrictions now, but giving a mast in people’s sight is much inspiring than an empty horizon.
